Best in Show is a 2000 independent film that follows five entrants in a prestigious dog show. The film focuses on the slightly surreal interactions among the various owners and handlers as they travel to the show and compete. Much of the dialogue was improvised.

Christopher Guest directed; he also co-wrote the script with Eugene Levy. Many in the cast and crew were also involved in the films This Is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration.

An incredibly hilarious movie. Probably Guest's best work so far. Fred Willard's amazing performance (I can't believe it's all improv) brings the grade up from an A- to an A+.

If you haven't seen this movie, go rent it. You'll be glad you did.

Best in Show is another very funny comedy, and with the talent behind it, it's not surprising, as Spinal Tap meets SCTV is a good combo. The story centers around a dog show competiton, and the characters are all a hoot. Being a "dog person", I found some of them quite relateable, and My favorite character was probably Harlan Pepper, and I don't know why. I also liked Eugene Levy a lot, but I always do in whatever he's in. His two left feet were just two funny...hehe I enjoy these documentary styled comedies, and this had much of the same flavor as Drop Dead Gorgeous, and I wonder if there have been any comparisons ever made. Even though I am the owner of the most beautiful and clever dog in the world, I could never go through what these people do with their dogs for the pageants, and I would never put my pup through it either. Very enjoyable!

I actually laugh more and more each time. Spinal Tap, on the other hand, hasn't gotten better with every viewing...

Have you seen Party Girl?

Best in Show is probably one of my favorite comedies ever. I don't know how Christopher Guest was able to do it, but you sometimes feel as though some of these people are not all caricatures and come across as even believeable, which is an impressive feat for a mockumentary. The highlight of Best in Show is probably Fred Willard, who gives one of the funniest brief turns in a motion picture that I've ever seen. The dialogue is insanely funny, as well.

Sherri Ann: "We have so much in common, we both love soup and snow peas, we love the outdoors and talking and not talking. We could talk or not talk forever and still find things to not talk about."

Hamilton to Beatrice the dog: "Don't look at the fat ass losers or freaks, look at me!"

from other thread, since this has a poll and I archived this one:

The Best of the Guest! I think this was his peak, when he found the balance for amount of characters he could cram in but still asign enough screentime to each to develope the story. The dog show tension adds to the pace, and the quips are at their sharpest. Gets valueable new caste additions, and everyone is in top form. No wasted time actually visiting the past (as he does in his later Wind) he just lets "couples" talk about it, or have it shine through in the present experiences. Hilarious from front to back, but still oddly warm. Guest is somehow comic without being slapstick but without being overly cynical. His sate is goofy but loveable. And they're not altogether unrelateable. Just accentuated.

Good stuff...

I think I initally gave this one an A- in my 2000 list, but the more I see of the film (it's been on Comedy Central recently, and it's on HBO every once in a while), the more I've realized that there are few films that I've actually laughed more at. Or that I'm more entertained by.

I actually think it's significantly better than Spinal Tap. :gasp:

Me too. It had a better sense of timing, almost action with all of them moving in and towards the finish. No long stretches. I still liked Spinal Tap, but that was Reiner not Guest, and had similar problems with attention span that Guffman did. Still funny, but not Best in Show, which is outright hilarious from first to last minute.

Just rented it, and WOW. Great deadpan comedy akin to The Office. The characters are perfectly constructed, and it leaves you wondering who's actually going to win.

Grade: A

Pretty much among the funniest movies ever. I could watch it over and over never get bored. Highly quotable as well. A

"We could talk and not talk forever, and still find things to not talk about."

"No, that's a bear in a, in a bee costume."
"This? This is a fish. This is a fish! You know what? Just shut up."
"I didn't ask for your opinion. I asked for a toy that you don't have!"

"In high school, she had dozens of boyfriends."
"Hundreds!"
*pause*
"Hundreds."

I liked it a lot, but not as much as Waiting for Guffman, which is probably one of my favorite comedies. For the most part I found Best of Show funny and amusing but not as uproarious. Though it had its moments like the Bloodhound guy and the Starbucks story.

Fred Willard I feel actually hurt the film. He's too over the top and unbelievable, and doesn't fit in with the the other characters. Willard's character is from a regular comedy while the others are in a mockumentary, if that makes sense.

3.5/5

Mildly disappointing considering Guffman and what I'd heard about this one (that it's even better), but still a good to great comedy overall
