Quote:
Annie is an upcoming 2014 American musical comedy-drama film directed by Will Gluck and produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith. It stars Quvenzhané Wallis in the title role and Jamie Foxx in the role of Will Stacks, an update of Daddy Warbucks. It is a contemporary adaptation of the musical of the same name, which in turn is based upon the 1924 comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray.

The third film adaptation following Columbia Pictures' 1982 theatrical film and Disney's 1999 made-for-television film, it began production in August 2013 and will be released on December 19, 2014. The film was leaked onto the peer-to-peer file sharing websites on November 27, over three weeks ahead of its intended public release.

My grade is a little lenient because I really enjoyed Rose Byrne and Quvenzhané Wallis, they were much better than the material that was given to them. Jamie Foxx wasn't terrible, though he was hit or miss throughout the majority of the movie. The real disaster here is Cameron Diaz. As someone who usually likes her performances, she was just absolutely god awful her. She had an accent that was on and off, her performance was just all of the place in general. It was completely embarrassing. With all of that being said, this was a completely boring film and it was very poorly directed. None of the musical sequences are exciting and they feel like TV commercials, the auto tune on the cast is so bad they sound like robots. Ugh.

I honestly found this quite charming and enjoyable, and it far from deserves the critical drubbing it received. Does it have its fair share of flaws? Yes. The script is bad. It's overlong and repeats certain plot points. There are a few too many attempts to modernize the material. Most of the actors aside from Jamie Foxx do sound autotuned. But ultimately I was won over by this movie and its goodhearted nature - it's a more than solid family film that succeeds in large part to its talented cast. I actually thought Jamie Foxx was really good here, he's helped by the fact that he easily has the best singing voice. Rose Byrne is also as charming as ever. Quevenzhane Wallis starts off a little shaky but by the end I found her decent. This isn't Cameron Diaz's role and I think even she knows that, but she has fun with the material and I kind of liked the twist with her character at the end. This is far from a career-worst performance (hello The Counselor). The only cast member I found truly awful was Bobby Cannavalle. It's a frothy guilty pleasure if there ever was one, it's a hell of a lot better than the dire original movie from the '80s, and I have no doubt that its target audience is going to enjoy it immensely. B/B-

I'm not sure if the original was like this, but this shouldn't have even been a musical. On that level the movie is an absolute failure and that's kind of a problem. First, it feels like there are only a handful of songs (thank god). Second, all of them could've been lifted from the film and it would've worked just as well. All of the songs feel like they've been shoehorned in. And the remixes they put on the two famous songs...yeesh.

Yet, despite it being a complete failure of its genre, I still almost wound up liking it. The cast, save for one person, really do their damnedest. As someone who loathed Beasts of the Southern Wild, Quevenzhane Wallis really won me over. And she has great chemistry with Jamie Foxx. But holy cow is Cameron Diaz fucking awful. They heard her sing and they still have her the part? Then they saw her act? And she has three musical numbers! What exactly won them over? She's a fucking vacuum, sucking any energy out of the movie whenever she's on screen, and sadly that's quite often. Maybe she's the only person they asked who said yes?

Doesn't work as a musical yet I liked most of the cast.

A very low **½ (C+)

Good god, the singing in this sounded so robotic. Human beings can't make the noises the characters made in this movie. Still, this movie was fun in a so-bad-its-good way. Rose Byrne is charming and attractive as always, but hopefully Quavenzhane can get herself in another movie of Oscar quality. Aside from the robotic singing, not bad
