C As your punishment, you must watch Citizen Kane. I'll guarantee it'll make you change your Godfather review.

Re: The Godfather
it is not a film for people who see film as mindless fun. It is also not a film for people who need everything in their face to understand it. A lot of symbolism, a lot of stuff underneath the film. I watched it about 5 times and I always learn something new in the plot. Godfather part 2 especially. The great scenes that keep you interested are not the action scenes. It is the acting from all the characters that makes this film a favourite of so many. Plus it was on AMC today, cool

Re: The Godfather
Sure you can say it is overrated and it sucks..
However no doubt about it is one of the most universally loved films ever made and its popularity now is the same as it was in 1972.
It is respected by the critics and is on various lists and has won many awards.
It is also respected by the public as the original was a massive box office hit (over 550 million adjusted). It has deeply effected our pop culture and it has made many people great actors. It is a film that is liked by the old generation and of the new generation.
It is a film that does not seem dated and is on TV all the time and really it a film that is a classic.
I love this film as it is fun, intelligent, sophisticated and it is a epic mind blowing picture. Come on Pacino, Brando, Robert Duvalle and so many more!!

Re: The Godfather
Am I the only one who thought Sonny was the best character in the trilogy? Vito was always my second favorite to him.

Re: The Godfather
Maybe it's an Italian-American thing, but it's one of the ten best films ever made simply because no other film captures so many themes timeless to the nation as this does, and with such a scope, yet with such efficiency.

Re: The Godfather
it's hard to look at this as just another film. It is far and away the favorite film ever made, at least here in America. I mean, Citizen Kane's a classic for sure, but it wasn't respected in its own time, and most audiences today couldn't sit through it. Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon, but anyone who looks at it for acting, writing, etc... is bound to be disappointed. This is a movie that basically anyone above the age of twelve can watch and truly appreciate for its greatness, whether for its strong use of violence, epic story, interesting romance, fabulous acting, sharp dialogue, memorable characters, etc... and on top of all that, it is pretty much the inspiration for much of Martin Scorsese's career as well as numerous other brilliant violent crime films. It's hard to think that a movie could come around nowadays and have that kind of impact. If "There Will Be Blood" had been much more financially successful, it could've been a step towards something like that.
A+

Re: The Godfather
To me the films has the best Dialogue ever (only Casablanca compares).
Don Corleone: I knew Santino was going to have to go through all this and Fredo... well, Fredo was... But I never wanted this for you. I live my life, I don't apologize to take care of my family. And I refused to be a fool dancing on the strings held by all of those big shots. That's my life I don't apologize for that. But I always thought that when it was your time that you would be the one to hold the strings. Senator Corleone. Governor Corleone. Something. Michael: I'm not a pezzonovante. Don Corleone: Well, there wasn't enough time, Michael. There just wasn't enough time. Michael: We'll get there, Pop. We'll get there. Don Corleone: [kisses Michael] Listen, whoever comes to you with this Barzini meeting he's the traitor. Don't forget
Many films don't have a single scene where you awed and wowed by the dialogue. In many movies especially IJ, if there is dialogue you get bored very fast. Not in this film, you listen to what they say because what they are saying is damn good.
Few films have these kinds of moments, and today's great films may have 2-3 of these moments but the Godfather easily has a almost a dozen of these great "wow" moment's. It is the reason why this film is so popular even today, the legendary acting and the infamous dialogue.

Re: The Godfather
The Godfather is pure movie making perfection. Every scene, the dialogue, the acting - its all deep, memorable and most of all entertaining. That perfect blend of quality and entertainment is very rare these days. And the sequel is almost as good - but I still prefer Part I. Grade: A+ Interestingly - ive read the mafia wasnt as big on the whole kiss greeting thing until after the film came out Bit of Life imitating Art there!

Re: The Godfather
I heard that the Mafia and the Italian community was so awed by Marlon Brando's performance as the Godfather that he was able to eat in any Italian restaurant for free. That perhaps explain why he grew so fat as he grew older.

Re: The Godfather
The near perfect movie, and I never really saw it as a crime movie, but more so as a film about a dying King and who would take over the throne.

Re: The Godfather
Michael Bay's version of the Godfather:
The film opens up during the wedding scene. All is calm, all is peaceful. Suddenly the FBI come in! Black cars fly into the courtyard taking several people out. Sonny comes from out of the house to see what is the matter. He yells, "Son of a bitch!" He rushes back into the house and grabs a bazooka, and with it blows up the cars. Explosions everywhere. The FBI and the gangsters duke it out right then and there, but then Don Vito comes out, scars all over his face. He says, "I'm ready to make an offer you can't refuse." He pulls out a mini-gun and shoots all of the FBI down.
There you have the wedding scene Michael Bay style.

The toll booth would have exploded! You know it would have. Plus he would have already been in a car chase.

There you have the wedding scene Michael Bay style. You forgot the slow pans of the huge racked bride and bridemaids as they rub their bodies together and jiggles their bodies when jumping for flowers
