 Daredevil
Daredevil Quote: Daredevil is a 2003 American superhero film written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson. Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, the film stars Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer who fights for justice in the courtroom and out of the courtroom as the masked vigilante Daredevil. Jennifer Garner plays his love interest Elektra Natchios, Colin Farrell plays the merciless assassin Bullseye, David Keith as Battling Jack Murdock, a washed up fighter who is Matt's father, and Michael Clarke Duncan plays Wilson Fisk, also known as the crime lord Kingpin.
The film began development in 1997 at 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures, before New Regency acquired the rights in 2000. Johnson chose to shoot the film primarily in Downtown Los Angeles despite the Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan setting of the film and the comics. Rhythm and Hues Studios were hired to handle the film's CGI needs. Graeme Revell composed the Daredevil score which was released on CD in March 2003, whereas the various artists soundtrack album, Daredevil: The Album, was released in February.
Reviews of the film were generally mixed or average. Despite this, the film still enjoyed a profitable theatrical run and became February's second biggest release. The film was successful enough to allow a spin-off film, Elektra, which was released in 2005. Also in 2005, an R-rated director's cut of the film was released, incorporating approximately thirty minutes back into the film, including an entire sub-plot involving a character played by Coolio. A lot of fun. A-

You found this movie fun? I thought its biggest problem was that it wasn't fun enough. A bit too gloomy for its own good. Jennifer Garner was effectively spunky, though. C

I enjoyed it quite a bit, as some of it, including the dialogue, was taken directly from Frank Miller's classic story. Daredevil isn't as fun as Spider-Man, as his stories are more dark. (no pun intended about his blindness) If Daredevil had one failing, it was that not enough time was devoted to the love story, which should have been central, because Elektra's "death" would have been like a shovel hitting the viewer in the face, just as it was when I read the comic for the first time all those years ago. I think 20th Century Fox should have made it a 2 hour film, too, instead of cutting it to 1:45.
The director's cut is also good, with some different scenes and different decisions made by the characters, but the extra time was focused on Matt and Foggy investigating one of their cases which led to the Kingpin, and it should have been more about Matt and Elektra. They even cut out the love scene, as he didn't stay with her when she asked, and went off to fight crime instead. Daredevil wouldn't have done that.

Very mediocre. The only real redeeming qualities was Jennifer Garner as Elektra and [sometimes] Colin Farrel having fun as Bullseye. It was fine for about 20 minutes in the middle; but those 20 minutes all featured Jennifer Garner and after she left it fell back into severe mediocrity and lack of engagement.

Elektras more worthwhile altogether; and it aint a masterpeice either.

Egads. Colin Farrell's Bullseye was fun, though.

Just watched the Director's Cut and it was GREAT. I really liked the theatrical version but I loved this one. Many good to great scenes more. One of my favorite comic book movies. The only bad thing is Farrell as Bullseye. He is terribly overacting. Oh and Ben Affleck gives a damn solid performance. A

None of the cast really stands out, with perhaps the exception of Garner who delivers a mediocre at best performance. The writing is decent but the film overall is far to slow and dark to be very entertaining. For a movie that had great potential, it sadly wastes much of it.

I might get flamed for this...but I loved it. Seen it four times already or so and enjoyed it every single time. It's a whole lot of unpretentious fun, fun that some recent comics adaptations were lacking (see Hulk, Ghost Rider, Elektra etc.). I loved the cast, though I thought that Ben Affleck's Matt Murdock was actually the film's weak link. Jennifer Garner as Elektra was great and the scene of her training with the sandbags to the "Bring me to Life" song playing was one of my favorites in the film. Michael Clarke Duncan makes for an excellent Kingpin despite the skin color. Too bad there has never been a sequel, I'd have loved to see him back. The real highlight to me, however, was Colin Farrell's OTT turn as Bullseye.
Of course the movie had its fair share of logical flaws and cheese, but for the fun entertainment it was supposed to be, it ended up great and it was quite a good comic adapatation at that too.

I think this film gets unfairly maligned. I personally enjoyed it very much. Granted I didnt know much about the character before seeing the film but it was enjoyable and had a very Marvel feel to it - kind of like reading the comic but on screen. Plus the film doesnt take itself too seriously. Good performances all round - with Garner, Farrell and Duncan the stand outs.

Here's my Valentine's Day 2003 review of Daredevil:
Quote: Daredevil: Best Comic Book Movie Since X-Men
I really dug Daredevil! It is 10x better than Spider-man (oh wait... 10x0=0 so forget the Spider-man comparison). This movie is very dark and stylish, and lo and behold has a story -- and not just a story, but one paced so well that it's 103 minute running time flew by. The main characters (Daredevil, Elektra, Kingpin, and Bullseye) were all cool and well introduced (N.B.: I thought Ben Affleck was just right for Daredevil, but the woman I saw it with didn't like him in the role at all). The bits of humor scattered in the essentially tragic plot were very funny. It's going to be hard for Ang Lee or Bryan Singer to top this one...
5 out of 5.
