Re: The 40-Year-Old Virgin
I've never found the third act of Crashers to be even remotely funny. Even Will Ferrell's cameo can't save it. It's just brutally, painfully unfunny. And now it's also uncomfortable and slightly disturbing.

Trixster, I find your analysis of Wedding Crashers' third act to be compelling and informative and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
It was such an awkward experience to sit through the first time. I can only imagine it now with all the baggage.
40 YOV is one of the better pictures of the last few years.

I don't know which is better, this or Superbad. They are both at the top of my fave Apatow films (have to watch Walk Hard soon to see how it fares on the list).

Re: The 40-Year-Old Virgin
just brilliant. It's a movie with a brilliant concept that doesn't just sit around and make nothing of it, and that's why it's such a satisfying experience. Carell is fantastic, as is the cast surrounding him.

Re: The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Ferrell is the worst part of WC and is the only stain on the third act... I never saw the issue with where the movie goes, I actually like what they do with the Fisher/Vaughn storyline.
Virgin is better though.

Re: The 40-Year-Old Virgin
What I didn't like about Ferrell's character was how the film had all these strange but still realistic characters, and when he entered the story (especially at its most dramatic part), he killed the vibe that the film had held for so long by just being a loud, whiny Will Ferrell. Virgin never drops the ball in that way; that's why I like it a bit more. Both are great comedies with strong rewatchability value, though.

I hate the "Characters yelling obnoxiously to create laughs" trend... Ferrell and Steve Carrell do it all the time, it's just lazy. It's as bad as the "Characters do something stupid and injure themselves"... thankfully getting hit in the crotch has somewhat gone out of style, but the concept's the same.

Although I like both a lot.

Re: The 40-Year-Old Virgin
This was a dumb movie and it was way too long.
It was a pain to watch this.
However Wedding Crashers is great.

Re: The 40-Year-Old Virgin
I think we can all agree that the true mark of a great movie whether it be to the masses or to yourself is if it stands up over the test of time. I can honestly say that after three years I recently watched both movies and Wedding Crasher was an above average comedy in my eyes but 40 Year Old Virgin takes its place as one of my top 5 comedies of all time.
I hope Judd Apatow goes back to the 40 Year Old Virgin which I liked much more than Knocked Up.

7/10 -> B- Not bad, but not really great either. And certainly around a half an hour too long.

Re: The 40-Year-Old Virgin
This film really works well on repeat viewings. Seen it 3-4 times by now, still funny in most spots.
