The Boondock Saints

Quote:
The Boondock Saints is a 1999 American crime thriller film written and directed by Troy Duffy. The film stars Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus as Irish fraternal twins, Connor and Murphy MacManus, who become vigilantes after killing two members of the Russian Mafia in self-defense. After both experience an epiphany, the brothers, together with their friend (David Della Rocco), set out to rid their home city of Boston, Massachusetts of crime and evil; all the while being pursued by FBI Special Agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe).

Duffy indicates that the screenplay was inspired by personal experience, while living in Los Angeles. Initially regarded as one of the hottest scripts in Hollywood, the movie had a troubled production and was finally given a limited theatrical release of only five theaters for one week, and was met with poor critical reviews; but the film has grossed about $50 million in domestic video sales and ultimately developed a large cult following. The ending credit sequence, which features the media asking the people of Boston, "Are the 'saints' good or evil?", was shot by Mark Brian Smith, co-director of Overnight, a documentary film about the making of The Boondock Saints, and Troy Duffy himself.

One of the most over-rated (by people my age) movies of all time, just terrible and idiotic. D

This one blew me away. I knew about the cult status of the movie and all, but it never really loked interesting to me, so I didn't bother renting it. Well, I came across it once more lately at my video store and decided to give it a go, expecting a cheap knock-off of Pulp Fiction and other similar cult films. Boy, I was wrong. Certainly, this movie does borrow ideas from those and it's something great on its own. The cast is well-chosen and the acting is decent all-around. The action scenes are great and among the best-made I have seen in the recent years. Good soundtrack together with tight editing help the movie to deliver technically as well. And it is just so much FUN to watch. When it was over, I wanted to see it all over again right away.

It didn't quite live up to it's cult status, but it was good.

Around a B.

Loved it, one of my new favorite indie films. I say bring on the sequel that they have been working on

I think it's the ultimate Tarantino rip-off, and yet, it has none of the cleverness in its dialogue and violence for which it so blatantly strives. It's just ridiculous. And not even fun.

Willem Dafoe tries really, really hard to infuse the film with that Tarantino quirkiness, but he's in another film here.

I can see where it gets its cult status from, and, to a certain extent, I agree, but it's clearly just copying the greatness of a Tarantino or Ritchie film. Parts of it had me laughing my ass off, while parts of it had me shaking my head in disapproval. The character of Rocco was utterly brilliant, and was amazingly based off the actor who played him. Willem Dafoe goes all out in his performance, and definitely makes the film worth watching. The way the film held off showing the action scenes until Dafoe re-enacts them is terrific. But the two leads are kinda bland, the twist involving Il Duce can be seen coming a mile away, and the story is certainly lacking something. Definitely one of the most innovative films when it comes to the action, but not so much for everything else.

I don't remember much from the film, but I remember caving in to seeing it because it's almost the gospel amongst teens in Boston. I have no idea why though. It's a good film, almost as good as Tarantino at certain points, but it's one of the most overrated cult films ever made.

Agreed, quite enjoyable, and I have a soft spot for Billy Connelly.

Kind of overrated, but still entertaining. I enjoyed it. It has nothing on Tarantino's films though.

Im about 60% through this film and so far its ok but a major dissapointment. I hope it has some sort of amazing ending to salvage something.

Its bad, its really really fucking bad. Its like watching somebody masturbate all over their own dialogue and then you find they are obese and ugly and possibly Geert Wilders.

The best definition of something up its own arse I can think of.
