Quote:
Series 7: The Contenders is a 2001 film directed by Daniel Minahan. The movie is presented as a marathon of the seventh series of an American reality television show called The Contenders, where six people, picked at random from a national lottery, are each given a gun and forced to hunt and kill each other for the cameras. The film is a dark satire of the reality television genre. It stars Brooke Smith as Dawn, the reigning champion from the sixth series. It shares similarities with cult Japanese film, Battle Royale, 1986 Schwarzenegger vehicle The Running Man, and several other films.

Am I the only one to see this?

What an incredibly sharp and overlooked satire on reality tv - clearly the best since The Truman Show, starring the equally overlooked (and tragically underused) Brooke Smith (remember the hostage from The Silence of the Lambs? Yep, that's her!).

We're in the 7th season of a TV show that randomly selects contestants. Their mission? To kill each other until only one survives.

The best compliment I can give to the movie is that the TV show it tries to portray as real is totally believable to the point we can see THIS happen, which makes the whole thing look more disturbing, and thus making a serious case to those of us who think that reality TV producers just don't know how to stop... or do they? There's a channel here in Portugal called TVI that would be so perfect for this! lol

AND.. worst of all, the whole show becomes addictive and we can't wait to see what happens next and who will live in the end! :hahaha: Just like we were watching a real version, which of course adds to the "disturbing" factor and makes somewhat understandable the harsh rating it received in some countries...

(And great use of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" btw )

Damn, was 2001 the best year for film!

It is a good idea, executed not too well. I liked the ending, the rest was rather banal.
