Quote:
North by Northwest is a 1959 American suspense film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason, and featuring Leo G. Carroll and Martin Landau. The screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, who wanted to write "the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures".

North by Northwest is a tale of mistaken identity, with an innocent man pursued across the United States by agents of a mysterious organization who want to stop his interference in their plans to smuggle out microfilm containing government secrets (a classic MacGuffin).

Author and journalist Nick Clooney praised Lehman's original story and sophisticated dialogue, calling the film "certainly Alfred Hitchcock's most stylish thriller, if not his best".

This is one of several Hitchcock movies with a music score by Bernard Herrmann and features a memorable opening title sequence by graphic designer Saul Bass. This film is generally cited as the first to feature extended use of kinetic typography in its opening credits.

The world premiere took place at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

I had previously given this movie a B+. Fuck that noise.

North by Northwest is an A all the way, one of the best pictures ever made. I'm sorry I ever underrated it.

One of the top 5 Hitchcock flicks for me. Immensely entertaining, and never grow tired of the famous sequence from the waiting to the crop field. A.

Though their are splashy elements within it, this film just never worked for me. It just feels way more Hollywood than Hitchcock -- I think Hitch was in a transition with this film, and hadn't quite regrasped the reins of control...

I don't find it as good as Vertigo, Psycho or Rear Window.

I think its because we have seen elements of this film in so so many films...

However the Music was great, the sounds were great, the story was complicated.

However i never got those WTF moments or didn't feel the suspense like i did in other Hitchcock's film. However were classy, very beautiful and it was quite epic.

I saw this a couple nights ago and gave it a... C :whaa:

Just seemed rather ordinary by Hitch standards. Im surprised it gets all the praise as being Hitchs most entertaining film... Its entertaining as all his are, but theres moments where it kind of stalls. Long 15 minute dialogues that are more clever than add anything to the film and kind of stall the suspense and momentum totally. I also felt the going back and forth on Saint being good or bad was a bit jarring, disrupting.

Also, some bits were a bit ludacris, particularily with the ineptitude of both the cops and bad guys. The crop duster scene is a fun thing to film, but really, killing someone from a crop duster, really? Why not from a hot air balloon? :zonks: Just a totally random plan and not very efficient, at least compared to just driving up to him and shooting him. Instead of making Grant drunk to drive him off a cliff, why not just knock him out by force or with a pill?

The police side... it was awful easy for a man to kill an important UN member on foot in front of everyone, and just run away on the spot. Also, for the most wanted man in the country, he walked around in plain sight too easily.

One thing, Cary Grant is a very very capable leading man here, very charasmatic, best part of the film. Eva Marie Saint is her usual Im hot, who cares about the rest self, but again, she did a decent job.

Just not as enthused as everyone else.

I hope you're being sarcastic, because shack's reviews are much more worthy than the typical smarmy and/or moronic one-liners. Although in this case, I completely disagree with him. For one, I think this is a more Hollywood Hitchcock, and grading it on realism is not the way to go. There's plenty of ways the ending is completely ludicrous, but how can you deny the fucking efficiency on display? In one minute flat they wrap up the whole story into a pitch-perfect wink that gives the whole affair its reputation as Hitchcock's most entertaining film. Even if there weren't a dozen good scenes, that last minute alone makes North by Northwest a worthwhile film.

I would have preferred a one-liner.

Absolutely fantastic in every way.

Grade: A+

I prefer Vertigo to this, but North By Northwest is better than Psycho. :)

Not his best but it was an easy film to watch. Cary Grant is my favorite hero of all time. He is always fun to watch. But the screenplay was weak and characters were shallow.

I liked To catch a thief slightly more than this one.

My favorite hitch film is Rear Window.

B+.

8/10 -> B

Not the best Hitchock for me, but a really good one. The action and the plots are completely hilarious by today's standards, but the dialogues and the one liners are brilliant and were more than enough to keep me entertained.

Basically this is the archetype for the Bond movies.
