And what of the historic Best Supporting Actress Oscar win for Hattie McDaniel? I never said it was primarily about slavery, simply that romanticizes a horrible time period in American history. What's next, a movie that romanticizes the Holocaust? And yes it was a great accomplishment for McDaniel to win an Oscar, but the role was nonetheless an archetype condoning slavery. At least GWTW is honest. It's about the lives and loves of slaveowners. Thus they have slaves. Makes sense. Are we not allowed to make movies about certain periods of history without a sanctimonious message of tolerance? Compare it to, like, The Patriot, which gives the subject a nice PC sheen and is thus far more offensive to good taste. American Graffifi romanticizes a time when we had different water fountains for different races. Fucking Lucas. Will his terrors never cease? NOTE: I am not suggesting that Gone With The Wind isn't rather offensive. "Don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' no babies" indeed. But perspective, people!

Re: Titanic
There is a huge difference between showing how things were back in the day, and romanticizing a certain ideal. And I'm afraid that GWTW fell into the latter category.
But if you guys are fans of the movie then more power to you. It certainly is not for me.

Re: Titanic
Lol movies about the Roman Empire are bad because they romanticize about it with all the bloodsports and slavery...
Lol that was how life was back then and to suggest people did not have normal lives during that time peroid is silly.

Re: Titanic
BILLY FUCKING ZANE! Forget the romance, because this is Zane's movie from beginning to end. I forgot how good he was in this playing the COMPLETE docuhebag.
As for the rest of the movie, well, it's not the masterpiece I once thought it was. There are pacing issues (the first 30 minutes could've been trimmed to at least half that / and how many times does Rose have to jump out of a lifeboat to run back into Jack's arms before Cameron thinks that he still has to sell us on their love). The movie also has an Italian character who is pretty much nothing but a stereotype (because all Italians when speaking English "talka likea thisa" while pinching their fingers and thrusting their arms in the air). Also, Bill Paxton wears an earring that's very disconcerting.
And the newly added 3D adds absolutely nothing. Titanic was shot as a 2D film on film. The 3D does nothing to add depth and is really only good at darkening the picture.
Titanic isn't quite the masterpiece I once thought it was, but it's still quite a bit of fun.

Re: Titanic
LOL when I saw this last week in 3D was the only time I have EVER noticed Pullman's earring. I'm glad someone else said something about it.

I have seen this countless times by now but watching it again today in theaters was still an amazing experience. Just about everything about this movie is perfect and I love it to no end. A+

Re: Titanic
When I first saw this in 1997, I thought it was a pretty much perfect movie. Now that I've seen many more movies, it's still a great movie, but it definitely has flaws. Largely, the flaws lie in stupid character actions that move the plot along, and poor dialogue in spots (though other spots are great). How many times do Jack and Rose have to say the others name when they're the only ones there? It got on my nerves in my latest viewing.
Those aside, pretty much everything else is very effective. Casting, acting, effects, score, all great.

Re: Titanic
I finally watched this movie yesterday because I was snowed in, and it didn't disappoint. The first hour and a half, while a bit slow, is fascinating because of all the history of the ship. The Jack and Rose love story isn't terrible either. But the movie really gets moving when they hit the iceberg and shit goes down. There were some truly disgusting things that happened and things that were shown, but it really made me wonder what it would be like to lose all hope. It was a little uncomfortable to watch at points, so this is nothing I'd be in a hurry to watch again anytime soon, but it really is a movie everyone should watch at least once.

Re: Titanic
The fact that you just publicly announced you've never seen Titanic does nothing to help make people think you aren't incredibly young.

Re: Titanic
Not seeing Titanic has nothing to do with age. It's a fucking long film, and not one that is appealing to all people. I'm 29 and I only saw Titanic all the way through when I was 26....14 years after its cinema release.

Re: Titanic
Neither have I, and I love long films. Lawrence of Arabia just looks boring. But I should really catch it some day.

Re: Titanic
I feel like when it was released everyone saw this movie. There wasn't any demographic that stayed away from it. I think I was in 4th grade at the time and I remember seeing it in theaters, as did everyone I went to school with. It was honestly a phenomenon I don't think has been replicated since.
