 Re: Drive
But Drive is supremely entertaining. It's a top-notch action/suspense movie. It's pure cinematic pleasure.

 Re: Drive
Could have used more action imo...
Its a well made film but not as entertaining to me as say Fast Five.

Perhaps some stock footage of trees and waves along with rambling voiceovers would give it deeper meaning? Swhateva, nothing wrong with a little film analysis. And it is all (or at least the visual half) on-screen: it's called semiotics.

 Re: Drive
I loved this movie. I would not have been surprised if the director had been nominated and not the movie for the Oscars. Very well done. Gosling was deserving of an award too. Cinematography fantastic. Sound and soundtrack awesome. The movie just kind of hypnotizes you (in a good, not boring way) and then shocks you out with a few scenes of brutal violence.
Certainly not a film for everybody (I imagine many would think it's boring), but I loved it.

A- Exactly. I've watched it again and it's still growing on me. There is just so much to appreciate about this movie.

I can't stop thinking about this movie. It's a shame neither Refn or Gosling were nominated.
A+ now for me. The first one in a while.

I love this movie. I can remember that scene in the elevator like I just watched it yesterday.

 Re: Drive
I'm one of the very few who enjoyed but didn't love the film. I find the soundtrack however, as probably the best from any film last year. I've listened to 'A Real Hero' for like 40 times already.

 Re: Drive
It's okay. Starts strong but yields dimishing returns as it goes. The violence is goofy.

 Re: Drive
I really liked it, I dunno almost tarantino in the borrowing everything from everything and being all nostalgic, but then like bizarrely original in some way. It was really fun and a slick, cronenberg realism in extreme violence situations, and the storytelling in-between, when not depicting 80s romance, was tremoundously slick and quiet and cute. I really liked all the effort clearly put in, but it was kinda silly and the end wasn't as, effecting, as I believe Refn intended. It was almost a little condescending but I'll let it slide since the movie was awesome.

 Re: Drive
I finally saw this. As should be expected there will be spoilers below.
Pros: Great cast, best I've ever liked Mulligan, visually stylish, nicely calm. The relationship segments early on were the most interesting thing about the film.
Cons: Unrealistic in many places, final 30 minutes very predictable and routine. As the body count piles up in the final act it becomes unintentionally comical. Cop out at the end. It was out of character for the protagonist to not anticipate the final attack but once it happened it didn't seem right that he lived. But it's Hollywood, why give up the chance of sequel money.
B+ or there abouts. I'm glad I saw it and I'm glad it tried something different and there were some individual moments that were great. For what it's worth I like it more than any Tarantino film who I see as an emperor with no clothes. I would like to see this director tackle a more regular drama with that good a cast.

Finally saw, and liked a lot. This got C- cinemascore? And Haywire got a D+? That's really annoying - these are great films. I don't get it. Why? Because they have a grim tone? The violence? Lack of comedy? Ugh.

I'm sure cinemascores among cinefiles knowing what they were going into would be A and above.

 Re: Drive
Just watched it again since seeing it in the cinema. It's still the closest thing to perfection in the last eight years. It blew me away in the cinema - I just sat there afterwards in amazement at what I had just witnessed. Los Angeles really is the best place for crime thrillers. I'm eagerly anticipating Only God Forgives, have been since I heard about it all those months ago. The first scene when the driver helps Irene with the shopping until he leaves her apartment, is just perfection. Words aren't needed, it's all in the face, body language and music. Gosling has a charm that Winding Refn managed to capture. I hope other directors are as fortunate, and if they are, Gosling will eventually be selling movies on his name alone.
A+
