I watched the first hour or so last night with my cousins, but missed it tonight on HBO.

I love it more than any man should ever be allowed to. I'd say that I'm amazed that Adam Shankman- the man who brought us Cheaper by the Dozen 2- directed this, but choreography is his forte. On the other hand, I am very surprised that it was totally ignored by the Academy. The sets, costumes, and makeup (and surely one of the songs, but I forget which ones were original) were all at least worthy of nominations. Apart from the tech work and the songs, the ensemble cast is very good. John Travolta has some very cringe-worthy moments as Edna Turnblad, but even his performance has grown on me in repeat viewings. Considering that I had zero interest in the movie up until the final trailer came out, it was really one of the most pleasant surprises of 2007.

Grade: A-

C+/B-

Just wasn't that into it to be honest. The girl i watched it with enjoyed it way more. I found it all to be just lacking any engagement with characters etc. John Travolta was fucking ridiculously awful. In a major way.

The only elements i really liked were Michelle Pfieffer and Nikki Blonsky

'Cause you can't stop
The motion of the ocean
Or the sun in the sky
You can wonder if you wanna
But I never ask why
And if you try to hold me down
I'm gonna spit in your eye and say
You can't stop the beat

...perhaps the last truly transcendent movie experience I had, and it's gettin' on two years ago now - - how sad...

I wish I could flat out love this movie like most people but I just don't. It's good, yes. But far from one of the great new musicals. The first 45 minutes of it or so are pretty much perfect but after that it starts to go down hill (when it starts getting into the whole racism debate). It finally picks back up around "Without Love" and most definitely "We Can't Stop the Beat." But overall, it's just "good." And I don't think it has much rewatch value at all.
