Thats because he wasn't the best character.

I probably should have mentioned his narration .. the man has an amazing narrative voice. I liked it better in Shawshank, but it worked well in this case as well.

Brilliant movie, Absolutley sensational, nothing glitzy, nothing fake, no CGI, just pure old fashioned film-making. The film started off slowly, but then got really intense with the "Not trainging girly" thing, thought that was classic speech. The film has gags also, like Clint himself, always ready to joke with someone. Morgan Freeman was the best part of the film, amazing!!!! Top film, deserves Best Picture.

If Algren liked it, I might have to switch my FYC to Sideways.

Algren, I'm actually very impressed that you liked this movie as much as you did.

I really need to see both this and Sideways again.

Million Dollar Baby loses none of it's emotional impact the upon second viewing. When watching early scenes while knowing what happens, you really study different things about all of the characters leading up to the 3rd act turn. I was wondering how it would hold up with multiple viewings, and it holds up and then some. This will be a timeless classic, for sure.

Straight up: this is a masterpiece.

The one 2004 release that does not need any awards to ensure its longevity, and at the same time the one that perhaps deserves them more than any others.

My darling...my love.

Better to die having loved and been loved, than to live without love.

An enthusiastic A. The first (and so far only) A for a 2004 release. I need to watch a few films here and there, but I'm pretty sure I've seen the best.

Eastwood, Freeman, and Swank all deserve Oscars. Whether they get them or not doesn't really matter in the end; this film is good enough to stand above such stuff.

P.S.: I knew the 'twist' before watching the film. And
I knew she would die, and how.
The disgusting controversy surrounding this has pretty much blown the lid off, as have some jerk-ass 'professional' reviewers. Lucky for us, and inspite of them, this film works wonderfully well whether you know what will happen or not. It's just that good.

I just got done with the film and it was incredible. Hilary Swank is soo fanatastic. Bravo =D> , what a great performance. And Morgan Freeman was also incredible, he was one of the best parts of the movie. It had funny parts too. The movie was very sad  I knew the ending but I still loved it. I give this film a solid A. I think that Morgan and Swank should win an oscar. Also I think that Eastwood was great and does deserve the oscar nom. that it got.

I did see this for a 3rd time, and the 3 teenagers that I took were all blown away. It retains it's power remarkably well upon repeat viewings. I also noticed subtle things, that really make this movie so great, such as Scrap having an ice pack on his hand as he watches Maggie's fight from his room on TV. You all remember what he did to his hand earlier that day, I'm sure. It's this careful attention to details like that , that makes Eastwood so good.

The funniest part in the movie, was the exchange between "danger" and Scrap. Eastwood had already shown Danger looking at a bottle of water and studying it hard, and later in the film, he shows us why, as Danger tells Scrap he had been really wondering about something, but felt stupid for asking. Eddie replies that there are no stupid questions, and Danger proves him wrong by holding up a fully frozen bottle of water, and asking him how they got all that ice through that tiny little hole. Just classic!

I loved the part with the Crystal Geyser water bottle too, Mav.

Has anyone seen Whose Life Is It Anyway? I haven't seen it, but I've heard it touches on the same subject and is a worthwhile movie! ;)

One of the best movies of the year, as well as all-time. It's currently standing at #3 for the year, and in the 20's of all-time. I didn't think I would like it that much, but I did.

Absolutely heart-wrenching and incredibly moving. Clint has a masterpiece on his hands. And after seeing Hilary Swank's performance, I can see why she's won so many accolades. The boxing fights are crafted to perfection. Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood are also great. Overall, I loved it, and I'm happy to say it lived up to the hype.

Ok ... it deffinatly lived up to the hype, and deserves to be given all the credit it is earning. But guys ... I honestly think Mystic River was ... just as good.

I also think that while it is undoubtedly a top 5 movie of the year ... it does not deserve to be a concensus top 20 of all time as a lot of you are saying/sugesting. The movie was good, and will have a good shot at best picture (I think Aviator wins even though Sideways should) but that is only because of relativly weak competition.

I don't know ... I loved the movie ... but everyone seems TOO high on it.

Some thoughts. I used to post on mojo from 2001-2003 during the Lord of the Rings age. I must say it's great to have that set of films over with and have everybody else on equal footing. That being said: Million Dollar Baby is ASTOUNDING in its' emotional resonance. The film stayed with me long after it was done. Powerful, haunting, and inspiring. Pure brilliance. My score: "A"

Wow.

I did not like Mystic River. The plot devices were too contrived, the women too shallow, and the performances of Robbins and Penn too Oscar oriented. It was 2/3's of a great movie and 1/3 tripe.

This movie I expected to have the a similiar response. However, it was brilliant. I knew there was a suprise twist halfway through and it played out closely to what I assumed, but it still was extremely moving.

What I most liked about the movie was that the three main characters were like three pieces of a Ying/Yang circle (if you accept they are a force of three instead of the standard two). Clint Eastwood's character I most identified with being too cautious and probably letting his chance at greatness allude him, because of his timidity, all the while wracked with doubts and guilt over past decisions. Morgan Freeman's character who is at peace with his one shot at greatness and what life has brought him. Then there is Hillary Swank who takes her one shot and when it is gone and she is faced with overwhelming obstacles is willing to call it a day. I am being overly simplistic about these characters and their choices, but I think most people fall into these camps.

I also liked the priest character. At first he seemed too rigid and unwilling to confront Frankie's unorthodox/questioning approach to religion. However, as the movie unfolded the viewer realizes that the Father knows Frankie all to well and the demons that torment him. His responses are what he believes will be best for Frankie as a friend, and not out of orthodoxy to the Church which is what he seemed be hiding behind in the earlier scenes.

A/A-

Emotionally gut-wrenching movie. Great performances from Freeman, Eastwood, and of course Swank. Definitley one of the best of 2004. I wouldn't say top, but definitley up there.

Wow, can't believe I didn't post in this thread. I think MILLION DOLLAR BABY is one of last year's best films. Definetely a gut wrenching, sad film. Fantastic performances, especially from Swank and Freeman.

10/10 (A+)

Million Dollar Baby is a must see film. I was riveted watching this movie. In an era of lackluster movies and cookie-cutter film making, it is refreshing to see a quality film that distinguishes itself as a sure contender for an Oscar nod.

The character portrayals by Morgan Freeman, Eastwood and Hillary Swank was just incredible. The storyline was well developed and the plot twisted in directions that bucked conventional apple-pie/tidy endings. This was a "real" movie, it tugs at emotions without trying! Most significantly, this is an inspiring movie that will motivate people to remain steadfast in achieving their life goals.

If a person leaves this picture without having been emotionally moved (and hopefully inspired my its message to pursue personal life goals), their heart is dark, cold, and stony.

Clint Eastwood made a quality picture that adds to his filmography as one of his best works ever! Great movie, great acting, great story, and kudos to all involved with the project!

A+
Bought it on DVD, it holds up very well, I stick by everything i've said about the movie.

So I finally saw this, and it really is quite good. I loved the relationship between each of the characters, esp. Eastwood and Freeman. To me, Freeman was the highlight of the film.

I didn't like when Swank asks Eastwood to put her down like her dad did the family dog. I laughed out loud at that part.....all I could think about was Old Yeller. Still, that's a minor quibble. This was definately a part that seemed tailor-made for Swank, who I am no big fan of. She was very good, as was Eastwood. But I felt Freeman was head and shoulders above both of them.

My grade: A-.

A bit overrated, but its still a superb flick. For me Mystic River was better. This movie has some flaws, the score was annoying at some moments, and they dragged on near the end(Good concept, but do they need to spend 30-40 minutes of the movie taken by Eastwood making his decision?).
