I agree that sometimes an untraditional ending is good. But Sideways' ending was just annoying.
It didn't give us any human tangent at the end to go off on.
If they had placed the face of Virginia Madsen opening the door at the end; I think it would have given one clear line of development - whilst the mind of the viewer would have been the source of the other endings for the other characters; but the ending of sideways basically didnt clearly pin the character to any real direction ; and in film thats not good enough. Not everything has to be obvious, no. But thats not why the ending was annoying.

You might not like A History ov Violence.
And when you'll see it, you'll know why.

C+ Did you watch the scene on the porch? Whatever floats your boat, though. That scene is too overrated. The script overall is great, though, the 3rd best of the last year (behind Closer and Eternal Sunshine).
i feel the same way about that scene. too over rated.

The first time I saw it, I loved it. I thought it was fantastic and I'd probably give it an A-. But the second time, it didn't hold up at all. It felt flat at times and I was just...bored. The acting is top notch though. But I'll have to probably see it again to make my final judgement. Right now I'd give it a C+. But that could change in the future.

Hilarious film
Jack: If they want to drink Merlot, we're drinking Merlot.
Miles: No, if anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot!

Thankfully Sideways was not 2004's Lost in Translation!
As it turns out, it was actually 2004's (2nd) Without A Paddle - another buddy road comedy, albeit with fancier metaphors (and this time told from the perspective of the 'writer' character instead of the 'actor' character). I'm guessing that some of the younger fanboys without much life experience and some women viewers will have trouble grasping some of the darker humor as it is quite cynical and very guy-centric.
As to where it stands in the director's (Alexander Payne) pantheon - it is definitely, up towards the quality range of Election and not down in the dumps like his execrable About Schmidt - the actors are terrific in this movie, very authentic and unglamorous which makes the story all that much more effective. It was great to see Paul Giamatti in a lead role, and also nice to see Sandra Oh get a good part in a quality movie.
4 out of 5.

I loved everything about it. Probably my favorite movie of 2004 (top 3 at least).

WOW. Cant believe it took me so long to see this film - but I did yesterday and I absolutely loved it. My 2nd favourite film of 2004 after Before Sunset.

Re: Sideways
I don't think I've ever reviewed this. Anyways, Alexander Payne is love, and again manages to create immensely poignant, real characters out of a semi-implausible, entertaining course of events (see Election, which is just a more extreme version of this). The performances are all great, and who doesn't love them some Sandra Oh? A

Re: Sideways
It is definitely the best of all those acclaimed "indie comedies" of the last decade (like Juno or Little Miss Sunshine) and holds up very well on repeat viewings. While not my favorite film of 2004, it was certainly the best Best Picture nominee at the Oscars that year and a fully deserving Screenplay winner.
It's a shame that Thomas Haden Church and Clive Owen both lost the Oscar to Morgan Freeman that year. Both delivered the performances of their lifetimes (a statement that stands till now) and were clearly better.

Herrjéminé, Arthur, du hast ja keinerlei Geschmack. Nicht dass das nach deinen Urlaubs- und sonstigen Fotos noch jemanden verwunderte: aber geh' doch damit nicht auch noch hausieren.

Re: Sideways
Hey remember how this was pretty boring and not like funny at all? Yeah, me two. who knows, maybe in a few years when I am able to legally drink alcohol and gamble I will be mature enough to recognize the apparently great elements in this movie. For now, I really kind of loathe its pedantry, unfunny-ness and obnoxious self-righteous disposition.

Still love this movie. I think it's fair to say Alexander Payne is in my top 5 favorite filmmakers. He's been on an incredible streak since Election.

Re: Sideways
I love this movie, but I am not sure I would describe it as delightful. It is too in tune with the terror of personal mediocrity.
