The movie would have been much better if there had been any sort of attempts to give a solid idea about the characters. Once the two leads escaped the facility, I kept asking myself: "Ok, now what?" They went to go find their sponsors, but I could not and still cannot find a solid reason as to why it is reason enough to drive the film forward. They do mention it, that it was to alert people to the travetsy the insurance has become. But they did just that: mention it. The moral implications and questions were hardly dwelled upon, and the action that was used to replace it wasn't even good enough to distract me form that glaring missing piece of the movie. McGregor was great though.

An interesting idea marred by a bad story and Bay's terrible direction. The first twenty minutes or so is easily the best part of the movie, as it builds up the story slowly and refrains from revealing too much. After that, however, it's non-stop wild action and crazed editing, which doesn't suit the beginning very well at all. It eventually leads up to an absolutely terrible ending, complete with tons of plot holes and inconsistencies. The acting is pretty bad all-around, but at least Scarlett Johansson is great to look at. Overall, a disappointingly bad movie.

Seeing this again, it's much more solid in my book than Bay's Transformers, and if the freeway chase is only the slightly less awe-inspiring than some of the scenes in the latter, it's just as exhilarating.

Chalk it up as another 'I have no clue why people like Michael Bay's movies" movie. Though, granted, it is his 2nd best, after The Rock.

I enjoyed the movie, it isn't something I am going to watch over and over but it was entertaining.

Just caught it on Sky Movies. Don't really understand how anyone could dislike it. It's Bay's best film by a long shot.

 Re: The Island
I just bought this remembering how I liked it the first time I saw it. This was a sold B or B+ movie. Very entertaining and I'm surprised on how poorly it did at the box office. If you haven't seen it give it a look....

One of the best action films I have seen and easily Bay's best film to date.

 Re: The Island
A great concept overall ruined by Michael Bay. I mean they should have never left the dam facility, in fact if you take away the unmemorable action and just have the two Ewan's meet each other on the day of his surgery and you still have the same film. I'd rather a more subtle exploration into the mysteries of the island. Then it just turns into a chase film with not one memorable moment of action, instead really overblown stunts (The Hotel sign is easily the biggest "No Fucking Way they can survive" moment ever in film) and being chased by possibly the most inept team of special forces ever. I just can't get passed the stupidity of them being in a remote underground facility with only one way out, they should have immediately put a team of guards up top.
It's a shame because it really is a very great Sci Fi concept that is just glossed over in favor of Bay's overkill of editing, color grading, and lame special effects. For what it is, it's passable entertainment that is instantly forgettable. I still enjoyed it more than Pearl Harbor and the Transformers sequels for at least the small glimpses of great ideas presented in the first half hour.

 Re: The Island
Everyone should just forget about the existence of this superfluous shit and watch the 1980 Michael Caine movie of the same title instead.
