I really enjoyed this. I'd give it a B+ or A-. The animation is excellent and I liked the story. The only thing dragging it down a bit for me is Hiccup's monologue at the end. A little too forced. Otherwise a lot of fun. I liked some of the darker themes running through the movie.

The movie was very good, I thought it surpassed the original in every way. I liked that the characters were aged up, especially Hiccup, who I found very annoying in the first film. I also thought the villain was very good, and it had to be one of the most visually stunning animated films I have ever seen. The plot was also a very natural build off of the first film. I also liked the new dragons, especially the bewilderbeest, which looked awesome, especially their battle at the end. The only area I though the film was lacking in was that essentially all of the jokes missed the mark.

Right on par with the first which is also one of my favorite animated films. I loved that Dreamworks wasn't worried to go even darker with this film and they probably are going to go even darker to wrap the trilogy up. I was also surprised how much better the animation was in this one and it was already phenomenal during the first film. The score also remains as beautiful as ever.

Regardless of the film underwhelming domestically, if DreamWorks only made one film a year, and said one film a year was consistently of this caliber, I truly believe they wouldn't be in trouble right now.

Good: nice visuals (except for the animated people) and score, entertaining enough, about on par with the first.
Bad: stupid "mommy left but regrets it once she meets her grown-up son can you forgive me?" storyline, some humor that didn't work (viking chick drooling over what's his butt), creepy CGI-puppet people (GET ME OUT OF THIS UNCANNY VALLEY AHHHHH!!!!). Also, I thought the scene featured in the trailer (Hiccup and Toothless flying together) would've worked better with NO score, or some minimalist score + sound effects, but the over-bright cheesy Icelandic-pop-song choice did not work for me.

All said, I still liked it, giving it a B+. However, I don't expect to remember it too well (I saw the first one ~3 times and barely remember it).

A/A-

I am still undecided on whether I liked this more or less than the first. This is, without doubt, an almost impeccably-made animated films and definitely the best in animation I have seen in all of last year. But the difference to the first was that I saw the first without any expectations and it blew me away, while I saw the second with very high hopes and while it met them, it did not exceed them. So I will definitely need another viewing to decide.

What I have decided on already, however, is that unless the third film totally blows, it will be the best animated film franchise ever. Sorry, Toy-Story-fans, but I am Team Hiccup & Toothless. I love the fact that the movie actually made a time jump from the first one and we see more grown-up versions of Hiccup and other young characters. Animated films rarely do that and this gives the movie a feeling of being a direct continuation as opposed to being "just another story told from Berk". Cate Blanchett's character is wonderful and I loved the family dynamics between her, Stoick and Hiccup. The film does not have a great deal of humor and I was perfectly fine with that. Instead we are rewarding with some amazing action sequences and heartfelt tragedy. On top of that, the animation is, once again, stunning. This is a film that belongs on the big screen and in which 3D does enhance the viewing experience.

I completely agree, especially with the first paragraph. I've seen it 3 times now and I'm still unsure.

I wish I was as into this franchise as everyone else. I like them sure, but they will never be my favorite anything.

Such a garbage sequel to a wonderful film.

An apt follow-up to the wonderful HTTYD. Its great in itself but inferior to the original in almost all aspects. The family aspect, the tragic and surprising death and the final action sequences are great. The only thing here is not wonderful is Drago who is not as menacing and his character is rushed in almost all scenes. The score is so good here again.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 is darker than the first film for both better and worse. It’s engaging but not as fun and enjoyable as the first film. The climax also makes it feel like it’s going to end and then it keeps going for a while after that. The human face animation in this is excellent, the best Dreamworks has done yet.

C-, the side characters are so annoying, even more than in the 1st one. Villain is also pretty average. Rest is good
