Same reaction as I had to Super 8, too slow-paced and overhyped, movies where the main characters are kids just aren't as interesting to me. C+

Brilliant film. Only time Ive ever enjoyed 3D in a film and not found it a distraction. Loved the film history/preservation aspects much more than I'd expected too.
Not much to nitpick about this one. About as good as it gets.
Best of the year.
Yep, pretty mich this.

I liked it, but I didn't love it. Performances were very good all around especially Ben Kingsley, who probably should have been nominated for Supporting Actor here. I can tell the movie would have been cool to see in 3D which I didn't. Nothing particularly wrong with the movie, it just didn't entertain me as much as I'd hoped.
Be careful, guys. Libs might tell you to reexamine your opinion because it diverges from hers.
Was this really a necessary comment? Good lord.
Was yours?

At least I wasn't picking a random fight for no particular reason. And causing Bradley Witherberry of all people to contribute to a gang-up session.
And yes, I know you will inevitably respond to this with some comment about your intellectual superiority and how you don't "pick fights" with a silly woman on the Internet, so I'll save you the trouble.

Also, I think it's really unfair to look down your nose at someone who isn't even familiar with who Georges Méliès is. Scorsese may have been making essentially a tribute to him, but at the same time, I think he would be really happy that he was introducing him to a generation of people who are completely unfamiliar with who he is. He's probably hoping most will research him further after seeing Hugo. Suggesting he would be insulted if they didn't know him beforehand is just silly.

Ridiculously long and incredibly boring. I found it to be self-indulgent at times.
Martin Scorsese knows how to put the audience to sleep. I did like the cinematography but other than that, I'm so glad I didn't pay money to watch this.

Highly overrated. The ode to filmmaking is overblown as well, it's an ode to a filmmaker who 99% of people don't know.
The almost documentary feel developing after an hour is honestly out of place. In fact, most of the first hour can easily be cut out.
I don't know why any of the kid stuff is in place, because this isn't a kids film. So Hugo gets a home, but you hardly feel he's alone in the first place. It's two movies being told in one, and that doesn't mean that's good. Maybe in the luxury of the home where it's easy to pause and return makes it feel to me less involving but Hugo's story wasn't. With the way it took off you barely remember he's on a journey for a message from his father.
Plus the dream where the station is destroyed, was that necessary in any way? It didn't develop either story and was there to serve special effects, could've saved millions.

Even if many don't know him, he still is a substantial filmmaker that had a good impact on the industry early on and this film probably got more people to learn about him.

Yes, but an ode to a specific filmmaker with a fictionalized story, isn't the same thing a embracing filmmaking as a whole, at least in my eyes it wasn't.
Plus, the wonder didn't unfold on screen as the movie went along, something a film about filmmaking should have easily done. And again I reiterate Hugo is practically useless in the film itself, I didn't ever feel peril about his conditions or situations or really care.

You're going to tell me everyone here who used that statement meant that? I think, that this is another one of those cases where some have valid points and everyone else throws in the same worthless statement because critics and others have said it.
It's the same with the whole "brilliant acting" or "awful acting" thrown around for fanboy movies people like, and movies that people, not hate, but need to hate.
