 Re: The Artist
Well it is pretty pedestrian as far as silent movies go. Kind of a "get in, sit down, hold on, get out" experience. You won't hate it, and at 90 minutes, it's not long.

 Re: The Artist
The problem with silent movies is that they hard if they are long.
I remember watching City Lights and each scene was hilarious but as a whole it become tiresome.

 Re: The Artist
Just saw this on Blue Ray. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but am baffled by its Oscar win. Really? Better than Hugo? I agree with comments here that it won because of nostalgia and Hollywood's love of movies about itself.
Don't get me wrong, I give it high marks. It just wasn't deserving of the raves it got.

 Re: The Artist
Can we all agree this is one of the worst best picture wins of all time?

 Re: The Artist
This is getting released in China at the end of the month. Shall I see it or is it a waste of time?

Off the top of my head: The Greatest Show on Earth Tom Jones Out of Africa Crash I thought The Artist was a good film, unlike these four. I just don't think it deserved Best Picture.

 Re: The Artist
So I only watched this now and I was just intrigued enough to like it, but I can't get to this being anything close to a Best Picture winner. Bérénice Bejo is really good, shines in the film and Dujardin is good but second best to Bejo's performance and awards love for him is too much. The film does feel fresh, it's very practical and original for its time among sequels and cgi heavy films. I also like how the dog is a very prominent character. But other than that I don't see what's more to it. The story doesn't feel like much and it's pretty slow, though luckily the soundtrack is good enough that it's not a drag all the way. And I feel they could have done something special with this concept maybe, but in the end it appears just like a silent film as they used to make. As a homage to that it works, its just not making me more interested in silent films or feels like the pinnacle of it. It doesn't feel rewatchable either, unlike the later released Bablyon, which takes place around the same era. The story draws some similarities to that too at times and did it much better for me.
