One thing I don't like is the lack of attention Zoe is getting for playing Neytiri. I know she never appears as herself, but it is still acting, and she is wonderful. Better than Weaver and Worthington IMHO.

There's something very unique about Avatar that infects the mind and makes it impossible to stop reflecting on. I can't wait to see it again, and I'm pretty sure the aspects that bugged me won't be an issue the second time round for some inexplicable reason. I suspect I'll end up seeing it at least 3 times, which is very out of the ordinary for me! I'd say based on your replies about this movie, I think deep down, you were sort of disappointed with the movie, but won't admit to it cause you blew your load in the form of hyping yourself up too much for this prior to seeing it.... It happens and it happened with me with the 2003 HULK.. It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that the movie just wasn't all that good..

Yep, that's my biggest complaint too. The score was really disapointing.

 Re: Avatar [2009]
Where do I begin. Well for one Mr. Cameron has done what he has promised and then some. The world he makes is simply jawdropping and feels completely real as you watch it. Throughout the entire film you don't even realize that you are watching a 3D film because everything is so lifelike. Avatar also mixes in everything from action, romance, and comedy. The story is very rich unlike some critics are saying. The acting across the board ain't too shabby as well especially from Sam Worthington, Zoe Salanda, and Sigourney Weaver. As a whole this film is not only the best of the year but the best of the past few years. I'm probably going to head to the theaters a couple more times to see it. ****

 Re: Avatar [2009]
I'm kinda curious... Should I go see this again if I can go to a theater that has RealD? I think part of my problem was the stupid Dolby 3D glasses are, like, squarish and they reflect any light behind you. The scene when Jake first sees his Avatar was especially horrible in that all that blue light was reflected back at me from the glasses' lens.
I have two pairs of glasses from seeing Disney Digital 3D movies, and those are shaped more like real glasses, and they don't reflect. Is RealD like that?
I've gotta agree with everyone else in that I can't stop thinking about the movie. I'm really, really wanting to see it again....

However...outside if that, there isn't too much to praise. The story isn't bad it's just not compelling. The dialouge is cheesy and annoying at times. And the acting is bland, even Zoe. She actually was bad I felt. Whenever she cried I cringed.
My friend and I talked and concluded that as amazing as the visuals are, they don't matter with such a weak core. Films like The Matrix or LOTR both had a much bigger impact on me than Avatar because ther cores were much stronger. Avatar had the look of an epic film but it lacked the essentials to be it. all bilge

 Re: Avatar [2009]
James Cameron promised a game-changer and he delivered. Avatar is a movie that must be seen in digital 3D. The screen becomes alive as you enter the world of Pandora. I have never seen anything like it. Even the subtitles jump off the screen. This has hands down the best visuals I haver ever seen. In short, I loved it!

 Re: Avatar [2009]
The first act is perfect. The second act is a bit plotless but for the most part exhilarating/entrancing. The third act is the usual Cameron climax and admittedly a bit rehashed after all these years, but regardless essential to the film and genre.
Definitely one of the best action/blockbusters of this decade. Once again Cameron proves his strength is not explosions and action, it's the human element. Despite his high-budget work, the heart of all his films is in the characters, who never get overshadowed.

 Re: Avatar [2009]
I watched it again today with my dad.
For me, it was much better the second time. Maybe it helped that I sat in the middle where the 3D could really display itself in front of me rather than the extreme side angle view I had the first time. It flowed well this viewing probably because I knew what was to come. I really love the Navi creation even more. I did feel the last act where Jake is calling upon the other tribes to join was a bit LOTR-ish but one can't help but enjoy the female tribal leader in her war paint. My dad really loved this film and the theatre was packed. This other family I sat next to also really enjoyed it. Their dad was loving the action parts and the visuals. He was pretty vocal. There was applause at the end.
Lastly, Soldana's work in this is wonderful and she's the best part of the film for me.

 Re: Avatar [2009]
Cameron's a bit rusty for his 13 year wait.
Though the film features jaw-dropping visuals, perfect 1st act, the film falls apart in its 2nd and the 3rd is lacking some serious emotion because of it. The film is much like Titanic in terms of set up, however this is 20 minutes short and it really shows; it coulda used another 20 minutes in the 2nd act toe stablish sort of connection between the 2 leads. There is nothing. Lityerally, nothing. No scenes. We see her training hima bit and harmless flirting, but no substance like in Titanic where we can visually see the gradual fall for eachother both have. And, because, it's its 2nd lacks, the 3rd act is not nearly as powerful as it was supposed. The shot of Netri holding Jokes human body was supposed to powerful and emotionally engaging, but instead if just flat ourt awkward.
Quite simply, script was lacking.

B- wrong fo sho, that was easily one of the most emotionally powerful scenes in the film, it was pure perfection.

AMix any romcom, remove the comedy then add the best of terminator and finally use the best visual effects in history and you get AVATAR. If this thing doesnt win best visual efects at the oscars, they're losing all respect they have just one thing i didnt like... why does Michelle Rodriguez has to die in every movie she does?!?!?!?!

 Re: Avatar [2009]
this isn't really an experience that i could break down into words. it's just so beautiful on so many levels. if Cameron had just been willing to collaborate with a writer who's a bit better at dialogue, i would honestly have zero complaints here. what a fantastic piece of entertainment.
i think what makes it even more spectacular is the fact that, after watching it, i can safely say that there's no way in hell any studio would have ever allowed anyone to make such a film for such a budget unless that person was following up a success on the levels of Titanic. how many Avatars are we gonna ever have the privilege of getting to see in the future? given the direction box office is headed, probably not very many. but Cameron has, for the time being, prolonged that future. i have faith in him to make sure our next trip to Pandora is as memorable as the first.

I've seen it again yesterday and loved it just as much but I'll have to agree with excel, I think, that if it would have more scenes showing how they fell in love, it could have been an all-time masterpiece.
Next time on IMAX.

I've seen it. I'm still sorting my thoughts on it, but I know the grade.
10/10 -> A
It basically did what Autralia did for me last year. It's a flawed movie, but filled with so much movie magic (that's so elusive to movies these days) that more than makes up for everything. I'll write a better review later...

I'd also like to add I was impressed with Sam Worthington. Its hard to get a real good for feel for Saldana because she wasnt given much to do and played an alien, but I thought Worthingtons understated performance was good.

She was the emotional connection to the Navi, the emotional connection with Jake, did all the training and then her moment with her father then Jake at the end in human form. Picture fails if her character doesn't work. Her voicework was excellent as well. About her role, for Avatar did they capture body movements for scenes like they did with Gollum and Serkis?
