 Re: Get Smart
A cautious film yes, very much, but Steve is in my humble opinion, a master of comedy, while his surrounding cast is mediocore at best with the exception of Anne. I for one thought Anne and Steve had wonderful chemistry, but not at all in a romantic way, and yes their romance felt forced.

 Re: Get Smart
If Steve Carrell is a master of comedy, then I can fly like Peter Pan
I wish some of these comedic stars didn't have to resort to yelling obnoxiously or hurting himself stupidly to create laughs.

 Re: Get Smart
However his funnier stuff is not those moments, it is his reactions to his environment and his unscripted facial expressions.

 Re: Get Smart
Yeah like Loyal, my girlfriend liked it alot more than I did and I do wish it had been funnier. But I still enjoyed it (though the series is far superior). Grade : B and Mr Inc - thought the exact same thing - Anne Hathaway never looked this hot!! Actually I always thought she was a Plane Jane so this was a surprise.

 Re: Get Smart
Ya , the second scene of her in the film with the dress, and her against the wall or whatever with the gun, oh jeez. I've always liked her, now I really like her. She's come along way since the frizzy haired princess this is for sure.

 Re: Get Smart
I had fun. The action and comedy don't reinvent the wheel, but I found both to be pretty serviceable, and there were moments that got real laughs from me (The cutaway to Smart flying to L.A. ), and the whole scene on the freeway + rail tracks was actually fun in an overblown way. Again, not much new, but it did what I wanted it to do, so I was pleased. ***

 Re: Get Smart
10% of the time, it was dragged a bit too long. 10% of the jokes weren't funny at all. But the rest ranked from funny to very funny to even hilarious. The casts were surprisingly strong (Carrell and Alan Arkin, especially). The action was also surprisingly solid. 'Get Smart' is a surprisingly good time at cinema. I'm glad I enjoyed it.

3/10 -> D
Painfully cliched and unfunny. Carrell tries, but the material he was given is just one sticky poo that's all over the place...

 Re: Get Smart
I enjoyed it from beginning to end and had to laugh out loud several times. Carrell was perfect for the part and Hathaway was charming and sexy. B+

 Re: Get Smart
Ultra-lame, and nothing like the off-the-wall TV show. I think I laughed maybe twice.
Actually, more than that. Arkin made this film. But that's about it.

 Re: Get Smart
Finally saw this. Haven't read the other comments in this thread.
OK I'm old enough to remember the TV show, although I was about 8 years old. I had a crush on Agent 99 even then. (Later in life, in the early 90s, I even named one of my bands Agent 99)
But this wasn't really a Get Smart show. For one thing, Max was way too competent. The old TV show had Max more like an Inspector Clouseau -- he more or less stumbled into solving the problem than actually figuring it out. Plus KAOS was more incompetent than he was.
You could have changed the names, taken out a few catch phrases ("Missed it by that much!") and you'd never know it was based on Get Smart.
With that aside, it was nothing special. The romance felt forced, and the attempt to mix the comedy with real action scenes didn't really work that well either. It was a "meh."

 Re: Get Smart
The unfunniest major comedy of recent years. One of those movies that's so lame it starts to piss me off a little. For 90% of the film it has almost nothing in common with the classic series, which might have been forgiveable if it had forged its own fun world and had some good ideas but no such luck. It's just blatantly obvious that everyone involved is doing the minimum possible to cash their paycheck.
Towards the end he starts acting more like the Get Smart we know and then it becomes clear that what they had intended was for this to be an "origin" story. Well it wasn't worth sitting through 90 minutes of boring, badly acted unfunny jokes for that.

 Re: Get Smart
Well, I think it was its own adaptation. I doubt a movie like one from that era would have been easy to market or would been as well received with the younger segment of the audience.
The plot was pretty quickly paced, but I thought it held together and was very enjoyable, funny, and pretty witty at times. I thought Hathaway and Carrell were effective. The tone didn't aim for teens and played it well between the serious and funny moments.
It turned out to have pretty good WOM like many movies this summer. I think this one though stayed with me more than others that I felt better at the time.

Love this film. Absolutely hilarious and thrilling. Carell and especially Hathaway are great.
