blood diamond to me was the 2nd best movie of the year. I couldn't even finish The Holiday in one viewing. I had to stop wait a day and try again. To be honest though, I really dislike Jude Law and probably a little bias.

No, it's called "having a different opinion than you."
Sorry for being rude, but I think it's perhaps a bit...absurd...to act incredulous over the fact someone liked a movie you didn't.

Blood Diamond comes from the same recycled goods Hollywood Screenplay factory that birthed The Holiday. They are equally cliched, predictable and trite. I just think it's odd that people are less forgiving when the gruel is served in chick-flick form.

i enjoy chick flicks and have liked all of nancy myer's previous works. I just felt that this was not a very good effort from her so i probably graded it harder then i should of. I expected better from her.

Really sweet, nice effort from the always reliable Nancy Meyers. I wish she would finally get an editor, though. B+

Very entertaining and immensely enjoyable. I wish they would have featured Kate Winslet's story a little more, though. The old man and the WGA aspect was touching.

I thought it was well-polished and nice to look at. And it had some spats of good writing. And everyone was likable.
But it's also very uninspired, predictable, and the chemistry between Jack Black & Kate Winslet -- as much as I like both of them -- is just nonexistent.
C+. Kind of disappointing.

Am I the only one that found something about Meyers dialogue absolutely annoying at times? It seems like at times she wants the audience to go "Hey, that's how I think!", but it's not. At all.
It is, however, incredibly cute as noted. The British kids couldn't possibly be real. And I liked the soundtrack.
Eh.

Eh.
**.5/**** I dont think thats what Nancy Meyers is about at all actually. I think she has the sense of "projected desire" and she makes people like her characters because we wish we were more like these idealogical people with beautiful hair, great jobs and sophisticated tastes. She writes these characters which people can aspire to with hooks that anchor them in reality on some level, but in essence, they are typical of the genre in that they are not like us, just as their situations aren't like us.

Oh, The Holiday. How I adore you and your almost sickening cuteness.
It's Christmas time, so I must watch this and Love Actually soon.

It's been a while since I saw this, but I liked it in spite of it being predictable and too long. But then again, anything with Kate Winslet is sure to score at least a little love from me. B

 Re: The Holiday
I didn't like it much. Definitely needed an editor. Not only because 138 minutes is too long, but individually, stuff like those Diaz-Law conversations are just excruciatingly drawn out. Awkward pillow talk is literally the first 30 minutes of that plotline and Diaz overall has without exaggeration, 2x as many lines as she should. I agree with Jon that it's as if Meyers wanted to have Before Sunset like conversation carrying those scenes, or wanted them to be awkward-funny but amusing... but she failed... she failed hard. Winslet and Black is handled a little better but the sexual chemistry between them is zilch.
On that note, Law and Black's characters are clearly written as women. It was if nobody involved with this film had any idea how males act. Or Meyers is just creating what she wishes men were or something. Because all the male characters in this film are women in costume
Oh and the score is disgustingly overdone. It felt like a mix of 80s softcore porn, an HBO drama about AIDs, and the skiing channel. Like everything else in the film, they wanted to recreate the Love Actually feel but completlely missed the mark. I wanted to punch someone 90% of the movie because of that score.

I like this movie. All of the actors are pretty good, and its quite a joy. Perhaps a shitty film, but I can't help adoring it.
4/5.

 Re: The Holiday
This is my ultimate christmas movie I love the cast. Jude Law is seriously lush in this, cameron and my all time favourite Kate are fantastic. Jack Black miscast, but hey we'll totally ignore that and look at the pretty surroundings! Swiftly follow it with Black X-Mas though, get some man points in! hah

Whilst i agree with you on what you are saying fundamentally, I think The Holiday is actually a really great example of all of the Hollywood shlock elements coming together rather beautifully. Hollywood's big, silly storytelling sometimes can be quite magical, and The Holiday is a great example of that.

The Holiday
It is not the Christmas classic it so wants to be. Neither is it quasi-sequel to Love Actually that it so wants to be. It goes on for 135 minutes, and it drags. There is a nice winter-themed romantic comedy in there somewhere - Jude Law's widower story was touching, and Jack Black's plot line was also rather interesting, but neither was particularly explored - it needed to be cut down to 100 minutes. The best thing about The Holiday was probably the cameos by James Franco, Dustin Hoffman, and Lindsey Lohan, and the on-going trailer guy voice.
