Most of the film is very good, depicting the grim reality of Africa with great cinematography and sound effects, but like The Last Samurai (which didn't age well at all for me), Zwick just couldn't help himself at the end and strived too much for sentimentality again. And that one preachy line of "it's up to us consumers to make sure the diamonds are conflict-free" is simply awful; show the facts, state your idea and feeling through the events in the movie, but don't spill it out like that. I personally believe DiCaprio gave the better of his two performances here. Not as impressed by Hounsou since he was basically just yelling and running the whole way. Still overall recommended as it dealt with an important subject and produced a fine result.

B+/B

I do agree that it felt a little cheesy and preachy in the end.

it's a little disturbing to see that "Diamond Cart" add on top of the page just after watching this fine movie.

B+ although Leo's accent was just awful. Stick to english.

Watched it yesterday and I must say it has been a big disappointment. After The Interpreter, we now have another boring, preachy, rhetorical and quite predictable movie about Africa and its sociopolitical situation. Saying the ending is a little ridiculous is an euphemism. At least, the acting is good.
C- or 5.5/10

Wow. What an AMAZING movie. Intense, well thought-out, and just grand. Definitely inspiring movie, disappointing that a lot of you didn't like it.

I don't know, I think this type of movie definitely needed that. Perhaps you didn't need to hear it, maybe you already know the situation on diamonds, but others like me (perhaps the target audience) who didn't how much blood is shed for such a small object needed to hear that there are diamonds that you can buy which don't go through this awful process.

2nd viewing lately, its always on HBO now, it is a really good movie, and worthy of its nominations. The acting is great, DiCaprio is a badass in this movie and the action and overall story is well done.

One of the best of 06 for Sure

Some thrilling action sequences, but a bit heavy handed for the rest outside.

I thought it was a very good movie up until the end when it decided to go the overly preachy way which somewhat pissed me off. I mean, yeah, we got the message before that already, enough with this! Talk about being subtle, hehe.

Other than that, it's really a solid political actioner of sorts. Leonardo DiCaprio keeps proving to me that I was wrong dismissing him as a good actor. He's realy good in this, though I must say that he was still quite a bit better in The Departed and it's a shame he was snubbed for that one in favor of this. Still, it was a very solid turn. Djimon Hounsou didn't get much to do, though, apart from looking pissed off and screaming a lot. Jennifer Connelly was decent and likeable. I liked the film's storyline and it was quite interesting to follow. The few action scenes were quite intense and well-shot. The message is good too...if only it didn't decide to go preachy with it at the end. Seriously, movies that want to convey an "important" message should watch the lines of Munich and Lord of War to see how it can be done in a good and non-offending way.

However, other than that main complaint of mine, there is not much to dislike about this. I liked The Last Samurai more than this, but this is still one hell of an entertaining flick, especially during the whole midsection and the showdown at the end.

It's very entertaining and very well-acted, not to mention it's heart is in the right place, but the action was simply ridiculously over-the-top. Political movies about global situations are NOT supposed to have fuckin' rocket launchers going off all over the place and Djimon Hounsou & Leo DiCaprio somehow being the only people to survive an attack by a few hundred guns. If it took out the ridiculous action - and the terrible romantic subplot - it could've been one of the best films of 2006.
