The film attempted to have its cake and eat it too by making you sympathize with the plight of the Arab contestant but also despise the person he is supposed to kill. In this day and age attempting to sympathize with a terrorist is awfully difficult, to say the least. He's a terrorist not by any act he performed but for the simple fact that he doesn't turn in his comrades back in the training camp, which he could have done. I actually thought the clueless president was endearing, as I said in my mini-review. He was just so out of it and such a pawn that you felt bad for him, even though it was a satire.
He wasn't unlikeable but not very flattering either.

He was a parody. He wasn't supposed to be flattering. But since when does making fun of the president mean you're unAmerican? Oh, right. Since Bush.

Jason Dohring. Logan Echolls on Veronica Mars. Taken during Marsathon in Austin last January.

I saw it tonight, and 2006 will not yield a worse movie than this unfocused, unfunny, directionless slob of broad comedy and toothless satire (two things that DON'T MIX). And there is nothing worse than failed satire.
Wretched. Feels like Weitz wrote it over a weekend....and never did a second draft!
It reminded me of Crash...everything's on the surface, with no abiguities, shadings, or nuance. Fucking awful.

B- (generous grade)
Bitterly disappointed by this. I thought the performances were hit and miss, Grant is grant but Quaid is annoyingly bad. Actually a lot of AD was hit and miss. This might need a second viewing.

I haven't seen too many movies twice this year, just V for Vendetta, U93, and Poseidon so far - but last night I added another repeat viewing to my 2006 movie schedule -- American Dreamz...
I loved it even more this time! I just can't believe this hilarious satire only made $10m worldwide (!)
The songs were spot-on parodies, that were still enjoyable to listen to as ably voiced by Mandy Moore - who BTW does a great job at acting here, continuing her streak of great film roles. I noticed the songs were written by Stephen Trask, who wrote the songs for Hedwig and the Angry Inch, one of the best (and funniest) rock operas of all time.
Yup, this is a great, great movie that has a secure spot on my 2006 top ten list.

Oh boy...if you make a blatant, to the wall satire, thenplease, at least make it funny!
A severe disappointment after the last collaboration between the Weitz brothers and Hugh Grant, the wonderful About a Boy. This one is just like a stupid Leslie Nielsen spoof or something. Almost all jokes all flat, I mean all of them are so obvious and you see them coming a mile ahead.
Hugh Grant was the only real highlight in this. The only times I enjoyed the film was when he was on screen.

I'm a little surprised. I didn't expect to laugh as much as I did. Yeah, the middle of the film is kind of weak, but the first and last third are great stuff, and any scene involving Hugh Grant is an absolute riot.
Solid B.

I completley loved it. Sure it mixed the sharp tones and satire with the enjoyable comedy, but Weitz pulls that off perfectly, making it a satire that is also one of the most entertaining movies of the year. The ensemble is tip top here, with Grant, Quaid, Moore, Klein, Harden, Dafoe... the best ensemble movie 06 thus far. Extremely well directed too, for this type of movie.
Seriously, Arabs trying to make the finals of the show so they can blow up the president... that's fucking gold.
A
By the way, the ending was dynamite. The fact that after the entire climax, they return just six months later Tweed-less and cover the entire situation as a happy-go-lucky affair, was the perfect way to cap it off.

Sporadically hilarious, it has its moments of laugh-out-loud humour, but also its moments of heavy-handed satire that just isn't funny. Having Dennis Quaid talk like Dubya isn't funny unless he's saying something funny. As stated, the satire is so blatantly obvious that it kinda ruins the fun, and there are several scenes - and characters - that could have been cut, but the overall premise is amusing and it is quite funny at times. Quaid and the guy playing Omar are the only standouts among the cast, and the story is weak at times, though the dialogue is witty. All in all, flawed but entertaining flick.

Awful.
The satire is mild at best, and I think I laughed maybe twice. (I liked the song with the "dreams... with a z".)

(maybe because I had a very high expectation for this movie, I (really) loved both About A Boy and In Good Company)

I still have this in my top 10 or 11 of the year.
I love all the actors, and I just enjoyed myself so much while watching it. It's not a biting satire, but I don't think it wants to be. It's just a light, fluffy, funny comedy with a slight satirical undertone... and it's great.

Meh! Don't waste your love on the haters, Shack. Those who know it's great, know it's great...
