It's the exact same type of humor. It basically comes down to your opinion of the films being lampooned.

The Dark Shape
There were hits and misses the third time around, it was pretty much hit and miss throughout
With SM4 it was way more hits than misses for the first half then it literally dies and nothing is funny for the final half.

Pretty much the same movie as Scary Movie 3, just with different films being spoofed. I've never found these films that funny, and I was not disappointed.

With the holiday and the beginning of spring break in Massachusetts, there were many kids at my showing today. I figured with 75% of the theater being made up of teenagers, it would be a laugh riot. I was surprised to find out that at 6 times, I laughed out loud at something that no one else in the theater found to be funny. For instance, the scene where Cindy is supposed to be speaking in Japanese to the little boy, but is only saying Japanese products, I found that to be very funny. No one else did. As a matter of fact, I would say about 60% of the jokes flew over their heads. It didn't really impact my grade one way or the other, I just found it to be interesting.
As for the film itself, it's nowhere near as bad as the second film, but it's a step down from the third. If I had a choice between Craig Bierko or Charlie Sheen and Simon Rex, I would go with the latter. Still, Bierko was funny as Tom Ryan. Even though Sheen and Rex are still in the film, they're only in it briefly, and Rex's appearance is during a flat out unfunny sequence parodying Million Dollar Baby. That sequence and The Village spoofs weren't very good, but they make up about 10 minutes of film time. The funniest sequence of the film either involved Leslie Nielsen, who is criminally underused in the film, and any sequence involving the Saw series. The War of the Worlds parody was okay too.
The scenes that made me laugh the most during the film involved the Japanese sequence which I mentoned earlier, the old door lock gag, anything involving Leslie Nielsen, and anything involving that doll from Saw.
That saying, the film is uneven, even for a parody. The laughs are scattered about, and there wasn't a sequence of when I was in stitches.
Another thing that bugged me, was the fact that some sequences were shot with digital film. The thing that bugged me most was that they seemed to be filmed that way for the sake of being filmed. There was no special reasoning for it, and they would be just scattered in the film. It was used especially during the War of the Worlds sequences when the family is in the car, and when they were running up the film. Since the film didn't need to have the digital film, it was a distraction that took me out of the film, somewhat.
Still, Scary Movie 4 is funny and worth watching.
C+
Here is how I would rank the series so far, since there will no doubt be a fifth film.
Scary Movie - A
Scary Movie 3 - B
Scary Movie 4 - C+
Scary Movie 2 - D

I thought the BROKEBACK spoof worked well. Not many people from the audience got it straight away, which didn't shock me.

The best spoof was probably the one with Yoko in it and her non existant jaw. Cindy's reaction was priceless.
If they had basically done what they did in scary movie 1 and 2 and kept it all centrally about one movie [in this case, tehy should have done The Grudge] it would be much, much better.
But Zucker basically strings together ideas hes had for spoofing movies with lame plot changes. The reason the first two worked was because they actually did have some sort of story. And one that had been done already [scream in sm1, the haunting in sm2]
The Ring formed the basis of sm3, but it did drift in and out of different movies, in this one, war of the worlds is arguably the central plot but it battoned between different movies so often it didnt really ever follow an actual plot.
I think that the first two basically had lots of reference and genre gags. These two have been much more about like, full out slapstick recreational parody.
The reference and genre stuff works better.

Yeah. But i liked the Japanese conversation between her and the boy. That obviously had a bit of thought into it.

The grudge spoofs were definately the best. Really they could have made a much better movie if they just stuck with the grudge as the center and involved elements and jokes about the other movies parodied in that. They probably could have saved about $25m in production budget too
I noticed they really shoved everything from the grudge into the space of like, 10 minutes. In reality they could have easily used it throughout the runtime and instead brought little bits of WOTW and the village and what not into that house. The fact that the movie darted between characters and plots was irritating

I don't understand what people found funny in the M$B spoof.
The two best lines in the film were when Shaq said, "Kobe?" and when Leslie Nielsen said, "...it's an honor to be here at the... un." If the movie had more clever lines like this, it would have been as good as the original.

The WOTW spoof just went on too long. The one with the door and the lock, was really bottom of the barrel.

I agree. The funniest parts were the witty, clever jokes, not the gross-out humour. Like the part where they speak Japanese by using Japanese brand names and food. But it was marred by the overuse of fart jokes and toilet humour.

Shaq actually adlibbed that line.
Anywho, I've seen enough "It's just like SM3" comments in this thread to convince me to pass on this one. My grades:
SM1: A-
SM2: D
SM3: F

Waay too much adult humor for its own good. It was best when it didn't have to be dirty. I laughed in many parts, then was embarressed in others. I liked the first 30 minutes (minus the Charlie Sheen) a lot, but the end was dragging and didn't have as many jokes. The Oprah scene was diappointed. And wasn't King Kong supposed to be in this one?? Wasn't he on the poster? Also too many toilet and sex jokes. It was just retarded.
