 Re: The Godfather
I can only imagine what would be like Michael Bay style.

 Re: The Godfather
Imo it was done perfectly.
It was gruesome and it fit in with the film.

 Re: The Godfather
The toll booth would have exploded! You know it would have. Plus he would have already been in a car chase.

The film opens up during the wedding scene. All is calm, all is peaceful. Suddenly the FBI come in! Black cars fly into the courtyard taking several people out. Sonny comes from out of the house to see what is the matter. He yells, "Son of a bitch!" He rushes back into the house and grabs a bazooka, and with it blows up the cars. Explosions everywhere. The FBI and the gangsters duke it out right then and there, but then Don Vito comes out, scars all over his face. He says, "I'm ready to make an offer you can't refuse." He pulls out a mini-gun and shoots all of the FBI down.
There you have the wedding scene Michael Bay style. You forgot the slow pans of the huge racked bride and bridemaids as they rub their bodies together and jiggles their bodies when jumping for flowers

And Luca is shirtless with bullet belt strapped across his chest.

 Re: The Godfather
Having not watched this film since I was maybe 12 until a few days ago, I expected it to be badly aged. Films such as ROCKY, for example, made in a similar era, are still good and entertaining but have aged greatly. That said, this movie - aside from obviously having early 70s production values - feels like it could have been made and released yesterday. The "message" and themes are not powerful to warrant "greatest film of all time" acclaim, but the message and themes which are there are executed absolutely flawlessly.
Very much like, say, The Dark Knight, and very much unlike, say, Titanic, this movie isn't so much a big build up plot but rather it's a bunch of smaller, 'very well done with themselves' sequences which head in generally the same direction & have a great ending.
The beginning Wedding scene is great. One long event but it really builds every single main character in a matter of minutes. Vito is a soft spoken, rational, reasonable man of action and principles. Michael isn't naive but is still quite innocent. Sonny is wreckless and impulsive. It's great to see how predictable certain future events are after the opening wedding. The hospital sequence is very well done. I love movies where it slowly builds and we are able to figure things out with the audience. So when Michael realizes what is going on at the hospital, or when he realizes what is going on with the car and his wife, or we realize what all the men are doing in the end - they're gold.
The movie drags a bit when Michael is in Sicily and Vito is hurt. Sonny is so over the top impulsive it's absurd to think he would actually be in charge of anything - especially over the much more Vito like Tom Hagen-, and the movie goes way out of its way to make him look stupid. This isn't even on Caan's acting, either. The dialogue is great for every other character but for Sonny (and possibly Kay, too), it's pretty poor.
Brando's Vito carries the film in every scene and it's easy to see why he got the Oscar despite limited screen time. Pacino's good but he's flat in comparison. Brando simply towers over everybody else in the film and without him, none of the leads are generally likeable.
The Godfather is an easy A.

 Re: The Godfather
Sonny Corleone's character is too absurd. That's the film only flaw. There is no way someone so dumb and impulsive would be left in charge of such a large operation. "I'm gonna go kill that bastad, pow!" - Hagen's all while Vito is all

 Re: The Godfather
Hey, I loved this movie, but it's true. Sonny's stupidity is the only played for humor in the entire film.

 Re: The Godfather
Iconic and timeless film. When I saw this for the first and only time before, maybe 20 years ago, when I was about 16 I was impressed and thoroughly gripped by it. Few decades later it hasn't changed that impact, it's absolutely one of the best films ever made, and must have felt ahead of its time when it came out. This time I was able to see the 4K restored version too which made it look so sharp and beautiful to equal the excellence of its story. Brando and Pacino are perfect in their roles, captivating the screen, the latter is just great in how he evolves from Michael the not-involved outsider to ruthless new don. The film is full of tense moments, the score is simply classic and some of the dialogue is unforgettable.
