The original ending is just as stupid. All it does is extend the torture a few more minutes.
What an awful movie.

Y'know, The Cave isn't anywhere near as good as this was, but honestly for my money, it's a pretty damn good little creature feature. Pretty exciting, with interesting set pieces and some genuinely cool ideas. Don't go in expect much gore and I think you might like it B.

What a great horror film, i really liked it a lot, it was creepy, suspenseful and gory, just how i like them.I like both endings, but the u.s ending is much darker IMO because it shows that she is completly crazy and will be haunted even more for the rest of her life, while the other ending makes her look like she's in peace and ready to die.
***1/2 / ****
A-, the second best film of the year so far IMO.

It's been out for a few years in other countries. Go to an UK DVD site and you can get it. And yes, it's legal.

The original ending was always the best. It leant more weight to the dreamlike scenes with the daughter eariler in the movie.

I actually like both endings in their own right. If I had to pick one I think the original is better because at least it gives some sort of redemption if you will to the character.
The US ending is just too abrupt.

I agree. Also, unlike what some others said, I think it is more haunting.

Awesome flick. The scariest film since the millenium. Some of the characters were annoying, but it was nuts literally. I loved the buildup then the free for all. I really dont mind the ending. For an American audience, I think the ending is perfect. its in that whole Grudge/John Carpenter/ American one last scare. The original is just so unreal that she dreamed that whole thing. Then she feels good that shes about to die. The American ending is much better in my opinion.

Grade A
You wouldn't think a movie concerning 6 females set in a cavernous underworld would be a good premise or turn out to be a good film but I have to say it completely worked for me. I definitely wasn't interested in seeing it before hand because I thought it was just another dumb horror flick and especially after dealing with another foreign flick by the name of Wolf Crap which this film owns hands down I can say it was very redeeming for this to have surprised me. It didn't hurt that the reviews were very good for the film and any film that is currently at 70 something on Metacritic is worth a look and that swayed my decision.
I enjoyed the setup for the film and the introduction of the people after the traumatic accident to Sara. There wasn't much development of the characters of course but what can one expect. We aren't watching to learn the life story of each player but you could certainly gain a feel as to each person's personality type. The scenes early on in the cavern with the tight crawl spaces, magnified sound and overall use of light effects was very good. I really felt like I was with the characters in those early scenes especially during the tight crawl spaces. Those were especially good.
After Holly's accident and the downhill trend for our group the film continued on it's pace but getting more intense as it went along. I liked the surprise appearance in the video and Juno's early victory was satisfying but Sara's primal transformation was deliciously fulfilling. The amazonian type aggressiveness she displayed was almost overwhelming at points but satisfied me nontheless. I found the creatures to be weak but they served their purpose and were scary at points. It would have been nice to learn a bit more as to what they were, how they came to be and what not but again not major. The final confrontation with Juno and the subsequent escape was thrilling as well and a relief. The film felt like a long roller coaster ride and one that I will definitely be owning on dvd in the future.

Funny you typed that because some dumb blonde and her dumb comment throughout the film bf said "hey, it's gollum" when it first appeared.

I preferred Dog Soldiers. I thought Descent was very well shot and put together, but at the end of the day, I neither liked nor gave a crap about any of the characters.
For the record, I thought Dog Soldiers was very good. Lovecraftian premise, combined with the haunting sight of the long-faced wolfmen (they reminded me of huskies) running gracefully through the dark woods... what more could a fellow want?

A+
Didn't The Descent have only a $6 million budget though? It's all fair in the end.
Strong A for a masterpiece that made me cover my eyes for half an hour, and nearly shit my pants twice. The most memorable scene was when a crawler was hiding on the ceiling and two people passed under it. That adrenaline rush in preparation of the obvious jump that didn't come...

I could swear there were moment when the crawlers turned around despite nobody making any noise. Didn't that crawler-kid turn around and look at Sarah without her uttering a sound? That screams plot hole!

WHY?????????????????
I loved this film..loved it loved it loved it....but the ending was perfect..whty ruin it with the way they did? I loved the way it was right up until the whole dream thing took place. But the rest of it was absolutely awesome. The tension in the film was reminscent of Aliens, not as good, but still close.
The ending brings down my grade to an 8/10...if the ending had remained the way it was supposed to be..it would have been a 9.

Would you have liked the international ending more? This one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wP7zx8ecqY
I think this movie should not have a happy ending anyway.

Her escaping was not a happy ending. I love the fact that she "killed" her cheating best friend. That was just too cool. But the whole dream thing just makes it feel cheap. It's like I watched Dallas when the entire season was a dream so they could bring bobby back. The ending was perfect, and even if
juno did appear in the car, that could have been a halucination and it would have kicked ass like that. I still love the film, but the end just bothered me.

Uhh...as far as I understood it, the American version implies that it IS a hallucination.
In the international version the escape is a dream, but that makes it moreso haunting to me because let's face it, they'd never realistically escape out of those caves.

I didn't see the American one. I had a DVD from England and in the end, it is a dream and she is still in the cave. And there could have been a way out, like they said, they hunt for food at the surface, and bring it in....they could have found a way out.
