 Re: Superman Returns
Just re-watched this for the first time since theaters. No wonder I didn't remember a thing, it sucks. Hope the new X-Men brings the best out of Singer 'cause this and Jack the Giant Slayer make me a non-fan.

 Re: Superman Returns
This is a good movie, it just a bore.
Singer conceived the idea for Superman Returns the week The Notebook came out. Marsden even plays the same fucking role. It's the same exact story.

 Re: Superman Returns
The last time I watched it was about a year-and-a-half ago, and I still love it. Although I'm excited for Man of Steel, I would have been really interested to see what Bryan Singer would have done next had the film been successful enough to warrant a direct sequel.

this film is so boring in retrospect. I can't even watch more than 5min of it anymore whenever it's on TV. Heh - - in the context of your confession in the above post, it's fun to read your opening day review to provide some insight into the Superman high experience... Magnus wrote: Superman Returns review: I came into SR thinking it would be the 3rd best comic-book movie ever, right behind X2. And it didn't dissapoint.
Now, I'll begin with the cons first, cause I like being negative. The biggest con is the plot of the film. Lexs plan is not really that good and its been kind of done before. Another problem was that it dragged at the end a bit after Superman 'defeats' Lex, though luckily the last shot was great that it made up for it a bit. It also dragged in the beginning. It showed too much of Lex in the beginning in which I think it should of just stayed focused on Superman/Clark. My last con would be Parker Posey, who I KNEW would be bad. Her charecter was too predictable and her acting was just bad.
Now, the pros. Acting, aside from Posey, was great. Routh wasn't as good as Reeves, but as close as you can get. Bosworth actually was good, though there some times where you just thought, "isnt she like 24 in real life?" Spacey was the best Lex yet. But the two that really made the acting great was Mardsen and Sam Hunnington. Hunnington brought GREAT comic-releif. This film has a good amount of comedy in it, and its mostly thanks to Sam. Mardsen does great acting because he makes the love triangle not seem so ordinary. Usually, you have an asshole be the love intrest, or a guy with some issues. Mardsen beautifully plays this stand-up, nice guy who cares about Lois and will do anything for her. You actually kind of root for Lois to be with him. The pacing was good, could have been better, but not a problem. Action was great, espically due to the music. The action+music worked so well together.
Overall: A great, fun film with some minor flaws. Def. check it out, and if you can, check it in IMAX 3-D.

Oh, and I will say that this is a fantastic start for the franchise. The charecter has been reintroduced, and we've seen a bit of his emotional side now. I think its set itself up perfectly for where the others can really have a lot to work with. I FULLY expect its sequel to be the most anticpated film in 2009 unless SM4 gets released somehow in 2009. They could do so much with this now.

Quote: I've been over it many times before, but then Algren always seems to benefit from quite a lot of repetition to in order to begin to grasp at an idea...
When I grade a movie with what other people refer to as a "D" for the purposes of the poll above, that translates to a "2 out of 5" on my scale.
In the case of Iron Man 3, I rated it "4 out of 5" - - so I clicked the "B" button in this thread's poll.
"F" is the equivalent of "1 out of 5" and "A" is the equivalent of "5 out of 5".
Everything I rate above "5 out of 5" is perhaps most easily understood by "normal people" as increasing degrees of what they might refer to as "A+".

 Re: Superman Returns
As I just said, "your reality is a poor fit for my grading system". Superman Returns must have struck me as a very weak 3 out of 5 at the time of grading - - it certainly isn't a film I ever need to see again. {BTW, I graded the first hour and a half 5 out of 5.  }

 Re: Superman Returns
My review stands in the B+/A- range.
There's a kid gloves, walking on eggshells approach to the story, but what they did do new was very exciting. I think this film would have benefited from a sequel where Singer and company could really bring the character into it's own. 20 minutes could have been trimmed, but all of the actors range from good to great, with Routh doing a very commendable job filling Reeve's cape. The main misstep is that it is always paying homage, and as a result it's stuck adhering to the rules and film mechanics of a film from the 70s. In the mid 2000s, Superman and Lois flying, Luthor going after real estate, etc, don't have the punch they once did, despite them doing a great job with most of them. Superman needs to be taken advantage of with today's technology, and I remain adamant that the costume sucked!
B+

I never seen this film and will today.
I was turned off by the Superman suit in this.
It looks so sissy.

 Re: Superman Returns
I still love this movie. Singer's instincts were wrong in a commercial sense, but spot-on from an artistic perspective. I love its stately nostalgia. I love how it captures the melancholy situation in which Superman finds himself as a "god" who in many ways longs to be of the human population, yet also cannot help but exist above it. Man of Steel pays a lot of lip service to this feeling, but here it is a living, breathing, aching part of the plot. The woman he loves is on the other side of the window with another man, a regular man.

 Re: Superman Returns
One of Singer's weakest efforts, but still, it's very enjoyable to watch and fun; though now that I've seen the new superman movie, this reboot/sequel looks a bit dumb compared to the greatness of MoS

 Re: Superman Returns
Watched this quite boring but nice visuals.
However it was boring as Superman was like a God who never can get hurt apart from one rare thing.

If that woman would have been played by someone else than Kate Bosworth and her Lois Lane wouldn't have been such an unlikeable character, I probably would have felt the same way. I hated how unimportant Clark was for her. It was just Superman, the hero, who she seemed to have interest in.

While Amy Adams's Lois isn't anything to write home about Bosworth's Lois is excruciating and grating.

 Re: Superman Returns
I'm not sure if I liked Brandon Routh as Superman. He was ok as Clark Kent, but not like Superman should have been at all, and I think they didn't try very hard to remove any of the Christopher Reeve Kent from him, which was lazy.
Hopefully Cavill does a good job as both, but by the trailers, it looks like he'll nail Superman but not Kent. Then again, Reeve never really nailed Superman, only Kent really.
The closest there has been to a good Clark Kent/Superman was bloody Dean Cain!!

Henry's Clark Kent is an empty canvas. One might say he is "brooding," but not much else.

On the other hand, the actors who play Kent as a child are very good. The scene where he restrains himself from beating the shit out of the bullies by the fence is particularly strong.
