Interesting everyone but me knew I would be disappointed by this considering I love the director and George Clooney. But it is nice people know me so well and also devote time to contemplating how I will react to any given film. I am blushing.

 Re: Gravity
One of the better films of the 2000s. They can just start playing this in film school as soon as the DVD comes out. Cuaron’s frame by frame, scene by scene precision is off the charts
I expect there will be backlash because it does not run from Hollywood sentimentality or tradition, but largely embraces it. I thought it added to the film by making it more warm but I can already see the toughest Awards Daily customers raising their noses

 Re: Gravity
I was definitely a bit disappointed by the film. The visuals are outstanding and it's superbly shot. There is no denying its technical achievements. Maybe I shouldn't complain about the story and screenplay for a movie like this but I found it underwhelming. There wasn't much there to make me care deeply about the characters and their fate. Sure I could say I didn't want them to die, but when it came down to it I wouldn't have found it too heartbreaking if they were to perish. This made the whole thing much less intense. It's weird because I found some of the ads for this more intense than the actual movie. Outside of a couple of scenes I wasn't really on edge.
Sandra Bullock is very good but if she's in my top 5 female performances of the year it will probably be at #5. Really shouldn't be hard for 5 to beat her though.
I don't regret seeing it theatrically. The big screen is really the only way to see this, and definitely see it in 3D. It's one of the best uses of the format I can think of. Hell, I'd say it IS the best use of it I've seen. It's a really good movie and a technical marvel, but I wasn't amazed over all. It pains me to say that too. I suppose I was a victim of too high of expectations but it was pretty hard to avoid them with the unanimous praise that has been heaped on the film.
B+
I do wish I could have seen this on an IMAX screen. I was pissed that the showing I went to was on the smallest 3D screen my theater has. Honestly I was ready to leave and wait an hour for the next showing on the other screen but my friend didn't want to.

 Re: Gravity
It needed some Lea Seydoux. They could have used her for playing some satellite debris. Movie would have improved.

 Re: Gravity
I don't understand people who praise a movie for being "technically incredible". It's like praising a book because it doesn't have any grammer mistake or because the page arrangement is well done.

 Re: Gravity
Prose can also shine on a formal/technical level, but come up short in regard to content.

Yeah, this analogy breaks down fast because technical achievement engages the viewer on multiple senses - sight, sound, ecetera. Perhaps it's just me but page layout has never induced that kind of experience.

 Re: Gravity
Gravity is an extraordinary experience. It's the most overwhelming experience I have had watching a movie in a theatre in years - perhaps since Avatar. The filmmakers take the concept about as far as it can go, and the editing is so tight and the proceedings are so wrought with tension that I spent the majority of the running time on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would come next. Some viewers might complain about the simplicity of the story, or the fact that we're given rather simple exposition, but it's sufficient to establish an emotional connection with the characters, and it also allows the filmmakers to focus on keeping the tension high rather than braking for fluff. The film is very mightily impressive on a technical level; between the impressively-rendered computer effects and the near-seamless integration of the actors into the mise-en-scene, it's probably a guarantee to win the visual effects Oscar (and it will be a well-deserved win, indeed). However, as impressive as the film is on a technical level, it ascends to greatness on the back of its acting. Sandra Bullock does the best work of her career in the lead role. She's alone for nearly all of the second half of the movie, but her performance never loses the viewer's attention. She appears completely invested in the immensely challenging physical, mental, and emotional terrain in which her character finds herself, and she nails her character's troubled past and her attempts to bury it through work with levels of subtlety, grace, and quiet power that she has never achieved elsewhere in her work. Although it's Bullock's show in front of the camera, George Clooney is also quite good in his role, and he has terrific, easy-going chemistry with Bullock when they're onscreen together. It has been a long wait for Alfonso Cuaron to get back behind the camera after the terrific Children of Men, but the product he delivered with Gravity is an outstanding tour-de-force that was definitely worth the wait.

Great film, but there is no way this should be a contender in an major awards categories other than directing.

 Re: Gravity
Eh, most people here are predictable because we are fairly aware of every person's tastes and favorites, at least those of us with detectable personalities.

 Re: Gravity
Us? Well aren't we highfalutin? I'm not sure how much I buy most everyone being predictable though. I mean, we still post here for some reason. If everyone were predictable this place would get dull rather quickly. Maybe dull is the word I should've used, though that's probably being a little too harsh. Nice and present, when there isn't a dash of racism thrown in at an attempt to be humorous.

 Re: Gravity
Well well well...
When I first saw the trailer for this I thought... "That looks ok... why is everyone excited about this?". And then I saw more trailers for it and started really getting into it. And then the reviews started coming in, and it got me even more into it. And I finally got into an IMAX 3D showing Saturday night. And let me tell you...
I don't think I've ever been more thrilled while watching a film. I had a firm grip on my girlfriend's hand the entire time. The action was phenomenal. The visuals were stunning. The acting was top notch. It had three distinct segments of film, from everything around the shuttle, to the Russian Space Station, and finally to the final act and escape to Earth. And as mentioned earlier in this thread, the scene where Clooney "returns" was so well done that even though you know it's not real, by the end of it, you're still shocked it wasn't.
Sure, a lot of the Clooney scenes relied on the viewer loving Clooney. And I don't know if they could've chosen a more perfect man for the part. Bullock played off of him well and when alone, showed the frailty of human emotion.
So wonderful.
A+
