 Re: Amour
I was scared of watching this movie, expecting a deadly depressing and boring movie, but this movie had me from minute one. There wasn't a second wasted and the movie title is just perfect. It's a deeply romantic film, with two actors who I would hand out the oscars blindly. Both played their part to perfection and it's a shame the husband, who's the heart and soul of the movie, didn't got more attention. I don't know If I'll ever watch this again, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. I was pretty tired when I started watching it, but at the end I was wide awake. It's a film that sticks with you. I've seen most of Hanekes movies, and while most of them are good, I was never that into his directing style but this one blew me away on so many levels. A masterful film.

The title doesn't fool you- Amour is a movie about love. It's about all of love's happiness, heartbreak and reality, and- in its darkest moments- what love demands. Riva gives a wonderful physical performance, but IMO Trintignant is equally deserving of praise. He's the story of the movie. He quietly suffers in this film- so quiet that a friend compliments him on how well he's taking his wife's emmient demise- and it's both sad and cathartic to see him go over the edge and end it all. The pigeon that he captures and then lets go away encompasses his experience in a profound, quiet (the key word for this movie is 'quiet') way.
Haneke's brilliance in directing and writing this film is holding back. Long takes, overlit realistic shots, no score, seemingly mundane situations, and a disregard for a real sense of narrative continuity in an attempt to make each moment feel as important as it can be. He lets Riva and Trintignant do their thing, and I can't stress enough, they are miraculous.
Enamoured as I am with Amour, I don't know if I'll see it again. Each scene in this film still resonates so vividly, and it's such a roller coaster of an experience. Tarkovsky has that great quote- ''The aim of art is to prepare a person for death, to plough and harrow his soul, ren?dering it capable of turning to good.'' I truly believe that if people are brave enough, they should see this movie before they die. I'm thankful I have. It speaks wonders about death and love. (thems fighting words, Gopher!)
And for a movie about old people dying that runs over two hours and takes place almost entirely in one apartment, this just goes by. So you have really no reason not to see it.
A surprise late entry on my top 10 of 2012. Agree with every word. Well said

Just because there are no ghosts or vampires in his films doesn't mean they're not terrifying. I could maybe see that for Funny Games and Caché, but The Piano Teacher and The White Ribbon, while very cold, are certainly no horror in any way. And obviously neither is Amour.

 Re: Amour
Still, I named three examples of the opposite and even Caché is a stretch, it is disturbing, not horrific. Only Funny Games is pseudo-horror.

 Re: Amour
I think this is a movie that I liked much more when it was over (the last 10 minutes or so are great) but overall I thought it was really (too) slow and not very engaging. Riva didn't deserve the Oscar nod, the dude who played Georges did. On other note, I think this is the first time I've seen all the BP nominees before the show, and all in theaters!

 Re: Amour

 Re: Amour
I don't really think she did anything wrong. I think Georges just wanted to get rid of her.
Also, the film is a bore. A well-executed bore, but a bore nonetheless.
And Riva's performance is insanely overrated. She's the worst of this year's Best Actress nominees. She spends half of the movie paralyzed and moaning. Trintignant was way better.

 Re: Amour
Yeah, and Riva could've easily been in Supporting Actress. I think the only scene that had me completely mesmerized was the last scene with the pigeon.

 Re: Amour
The nurse is way too rude to her, you can see it perfectly in the hairdressing scene. I would've fired her too, such a bitch.

 Re: Amour
I'm fine with Riva's nod, but I think those that nominated her missed the point (and heart) of the movie.
I'll beat that drum for a long time. Or at least until the Oscars are done with and I forget about Amour.

 Re: Amour
AMOUR
I enjoyed the film overall. I thought the performance by Riva was brilliant. I had no idea. I can actually see her winning the Oscar. It wouldn't surprise me if she was chosen. Extremely stunning performance of a stroke victim and her deterioration of quality of life. Her husband also was good in his role as well. As for the film, it did get tedious at times but I kind of blame the director because he seems like really linger on things like the taping of the doors or catching of the pigeon.
Riva's Performance - A
Film grade - B
