 Re: Jack Reacher
I'm happy you loved the movie. Seriously, you were anticipating it and I know how much it sucks when a movie you're highly anticipating sucks, so in that regard, it's awesome you loved it. However, you don't need to bitch about me or anyone else for that matter not wanting to see it. The marketing IS incredibly lazy and it makes itself look mediocre and it doesn't set itself from any other movie like it. It makes it look like more of the same, so why should I go see it when there are plenty of other movies (Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Hitchcock, Django Unchained, The Guilt Trip and even The Hobbit) that I need to see? There isn't. Sure, if it was released when there wasn't much to see and I was bored and it had good reviews, I might see it but not now because there is simply too much playing for me to waste my time.

Let's face it, the marketing for the film sucks, though.
Now the movie on the other hand...

 Re: Jack Reacher
Jack Reacher
This film is superb. My legs were tense full of anticipation throughout especially towards the end. Tom Cruise shines yet again, like he does in every movie. He totally pulls off the Reacher role. He takes no shit and cuts to the chase. The dialogue in this movie is fantastic. I was loving the whole pre-bar fight "flirting" with Sandy (who was fucking hot, by the way), that was hilarious and just how we all want to act in real life but never do. This film really doesn't fall into the clutches of cliche at all. I was waiting and every time when I thought I knew what was going to happen, something else did. The gun shots were loud as fuck, it was realistic.
Robert Duvall was great in it, quite the funny man. Rosamund Pike is one hot piece of totty. I've got to say it; those breasts, just wow. Werner Herzog was forgettable, but it doesn't matter, this film is about Tom Cruise. Great action, great fights, some humour, and some badassery thrown in for good measure. I was just so surprised that it's not like a generic thriller. I want to watch it again as soon as possible. In the last scene where he overhears a guy on a bus giving his girlfriend a hard time, then het gets up and the film ends...I was so worked up into a frenzy that I actually felt like shouting "Yeah Reacher, go kick some more ass!". I was so excited at that point. I want to see some more of Reacher kicking ass and taking names in a sequel.
But just to let you know, this is not a "blockbuster"; not dumb enough or not enough CGI explosions for people to want to see it in their droves. In fact, in terms of Tom Cruise actioners, it's more low-key than most, but the greatness is there if you want it. The car chase, the sound of that car, is just awesome. Cruise can do everything; drive, shoot, fight etc. I loved the scene in the bathroom where Reacher is pretty much knocked unconcious, then afterwards when he starts beating that guy with the back of the head of the other dude on top of him - I LOL'd.
A+

 Re: Jack Reacher
Marketing wasn't shit, in my opinion. This isn't a blockbuster like Oblivion or M:I-4, so it would be naive to advertise it as such. At Cannes: It's been advertised at Cannes, so that sort of tells you that they view this film in a different light. They don't see it as a blockbuster. They see it as more of a Collateral or a Safe House; top notch action thrillers, not CGI-filled popcorn movies. I've not seen any ads online for it, but there are at least 7 TV spots circulating, 3 full trailers, and countless clips and interviews. I'm not in the US, so I can't comment on how well these things have been incorporated into the media, but it's got exactly the same amount of marketing platforms as many other films, so I don't see how it's "marketing was shit". This opinion often crops up when people can't find anything else to say. If it opened to $38m, you'd soon change your opinion to "the marketing was effective".

A piece of me dies inside every time I see a Reacher "fan" complain Cruise is too short and insist they should have cast John Cena or Dwayne Johnson. These people are insane.

movies35 wrote: The trailers and TV spots were dire, that is why were we are all saying the advertising was horrible. That's a matter of opinion. Personally, I loved the trailers and spots, they got me into the cinema, didn't they? Well, I would have gone anyway, but they were good trailers. They didn't show me everything about the movie, so there was a lot left for me to pay for, and it was so worth it. David wrote: A piece of me dies inside every time I see a Reacher "fan" complain Cruise is too short and insist they should have cast John Cena or Dwayne Johnson. These people are insane. Totally agree. John Cena and Dwayne Johnson just don't have the ability to play Reacher. They're crap actors, for one, but mainly it's their size - being 6"5 and massive kind of makes them a joke, and Jack Reacher is a film that requires a certain believability. Plus, imagine Dwayne Johnson in that street fight, the five guys would have to have been wrestlers for it not to look shit and it would have still been shit. I've never read one of the books, but from Cruise's performance, I must just start.

 Re: Jack Reacher
And Cruise portrays intensity so well, which is so much more important than physical size, in my opinion. It is the same in Collateral: he is not this tall bodybuilder, but you believe in his agility, precision, strength, etc.

 Re: Jack Reacher
Quote: The character of Jack Reacher in Lee Child’s books is larger than life, which makes the casting of the diminutive Cruise even sweeter, because he lures his assailants into underestimating him, and it’s much more entertaining to watch a smallish guy beat up a gang of thugs than it is to watch a guy who is physically gifted coast through a film unchallenged. More importantly, Cruise understands that Reacher is a man of understatement, and plays him accordingly. As action movie performances go, it’s borderline sublime. http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews ... eacher.htmThat sums up what I feel about Cruise playing Reacher.

 Re: Jack Reacher
It's, indeed, pretty good. But needed more Herzog. I was hoping he'd survive so as to return for the inevitable sequel, but oh well.
Cruise is Cruise, the action is exciting and well-shot, and the mystery is compelling and sensible. The whole thing feels a bit low-rent, but I suppose that's the point.
It also takes itself a bit too seriously, but I guess that comes with the territory. There's still enough one-liners to go around.

Really, really liked it. Low expectations might have helped, but this is really fun and I like the old school feel to the whole thing. Tom Cruise nails the role and it's pretty suspenseful and entertaining throughout without being too ridiculous.

The fight in the bathroom wasn't taking itself too seriously, neither was the one-liners and banter with Duvall. I thought it has a humourous edge to it unlike any other film. It didn't have too much, which would have ruined it, and it didn't have too little which would have alienated some younger viewers, it was finely balanced.

 Re: Jack Reacher
Man, I really don't see where you guys are coming from in calling this a better-than-average action thriller. It just screamed mediocrity to me. A blah script scattered with witty one-liners and decent action sequences. Cruise is fine, but Herzog just feels so wasted and underdeveloped. And the scene with the henchman and his fingers is just weird...
As always, to each his own, but I just am not a fan.

To receive a 12A instead of a 15, two seconds were cut from this film in England. I wonder which two seconds the BBFC found so objectionable...
