The story was OK.
I really enjoted that one segment on the water - I thought that was well done.
************************
I really liked Steve Zahn in this
Matthew M was mainly OK but he was very cool in a couple of scenes - And was horrible in this first fistfight to save CRuz
Penelope Cruz is just not good, likable on screen - IMO

Sorry Sahara Haters!
I really enjoyed this movie.
Anyone who's given a moment's thought to the 'new' James Bond rumors -- give your head a shake --- this is it! MMcC is the new Jimmy B.! Steve Z. is an invaluable asset to any enterprise he's attached to, and Penelope C. is indisputably hot, if underutilized here. This is a very pleasantly complex, campy, hoot of a crazy super spy gadget flick.
C'mon! Let go of your pre-conceptions - don't let the fan-boys rule your thought patterns. This is one freakin' entertaining old-fashioned picture show with enough smarts to keep the whole dang thing floatin'...
5 out of 5.

I'm actually surprised to see so many A's and B's. Odd.
I'll check this out, tomorrow, possibly.

I was busy, but my friends saw it and said it was incredibly unrealistic but really damn fun and worth seeing, and these are the more cynical types. I'll be seeing it sooner then later with anyone luck, if not tomorrow then during the week.

Judging by what (I think) your tastes in movies are, you might really like this movie. It's a lot of fun.

You guys nailed it. Sahara cares about one thing, and one thing only: Entertaining you. And it does so in spades. No question, it's an unrealistic movie. But director Breck Eisner doesn't care. This is obvious in how he manages to use a mix of a furious pace, exciting action, classic 70s rock tunes and tremendous chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Steve Zahn to create a film which is all but a guaranteed good time. The movie is unrealistic to the point that someone could consider it offensive, but the light swashbuckling tone and good naturedness of the film make it easy to go along for the ride. While Steve Zahn steals the show, the supporting actors have fun, and McConaughey is solid, Penelope Cruz is the movies main weak spot. With a rather boring and uninteresting character, she is nothing more then the average love interest, further solidifying that whenever she has a role that requires her to speak in English she is completely flat. However, this is only a minor bump on what's otherwise a roller coaster of a movie that, Kung-Fu Hustle aside, is the most fun at the theater since The Incredibles. A-
PS: Bravo to the ads for not showing so much of the action, they only give us a taste of what's in store.

After all the great reviews from people here, I want to see it even more. I was going to wait until DVD, but now, I might not.

I can guarantee you'll like it Zing, Paramount's ads really haven't been doing it justice.

 Re: Sahara
Just opened in New Zealand on thursday, caught it this afternoon after watching Assault On Precinct 13 (I had lots of spare time  ).
It was a fun film, but nothing more. If you're looking to unwind with a bit of entertainment and don't want to think too much, I recommend it.
Sahara C+ (52/100)

Here's a Dirk Pitt fansite that has conducted polls on which of Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels they'd like to see made into a movie next.
Inca Gold & Atlantis Found seem to be the frontrunners. Cussler is rumored to be very fussy about adaptations though, but they seem like they're made to be made into movies sooner or later...

Seriously, guys, Sahara is the definition of a summer popcorn flick. The trailers were very misleading. It made it look like a wannabe of National Treasure, with worse actors, and a weak story. Ironically, this was one of the most fun movies since National Treasure. The chemistry between McConaughey and his sidekick/best bud, Steve Zahn, was undeniably awesome. Zahn's sarcastic one-liners keeps the audience laughing while the action scenes of the movie (and there are a lot of 'em) keep the audience intrigued and wanting more. The story and a lot of scenes are completely unrealistic, which makes it a perfect "leave-your-brain-at-the-door" action flick. Penelope Cruz, while a hottie, didn't really stand out much in the movie. She was more of a tag-along character that added nothing to the movie. It's a blast, and a shockingly entertaining adventure. Don't take it too seriously, though. B-

i enjoyed Sahara pretty well, although the first 30 minutes kinda makes me abit sleepy. but the rest 90 minutes is fun and great. it's a good action adventure movie. the only thing that disturbing me is Penelope character with her accent. her acting was completely flat. but nevertheless i can see some cleavage. Steve Zahn plays really funny as Dirk Pitt sidekick. it's a solid B for me.

It was like some mix between Natioanal Treasure, Flight of the Phoenix, Indian Jones, The X-Files movie (a random industrial plant in the middle of now-where/someone falling into a random well? I'm just trying to be funny, don't mind me ) , and any other straight-up adventure movie. Matthew MacsomethingthatIcan'tspell was solid as Pitt, and the supporting characters were all very well. Speaking of which, I liked the supporting cast a lot. Surprisingly good for a film like this.
The plot was unthinkable. Really. I never got an answer as to why they had all those toxins there and what they were doing with it. Might have missed it on a bathroom break...who knows. And what was the deal with Dirk's treasure hunt? It seems the put it in to give his character an objective to get him to Mali. It was never explained WHY he wanted to find the ship, what was important about it, and what exactly "the future" was. (At the beginning someone said to "be careful with those creates...The future [is in them]" or something like that).
Overall I'd grade it a B-/B. It's nothing mind-blowing, but it's nothing to turn your nose at either. If you have some free time, and some free cash, I see no reason for not going to see this. It's hard to not have fun.

I expected it to be more fun but it was still entertaining. Not nearly on the same level as National Treasure, which I loved. Cruz was pretty much useless in this movie. Some nice action towards the end. B-

Sorry, Lecter, I forgot about commenting on this. I thought Sahara was an entertaining enough film, but nothing that really grabbed me. Dirk Pitt is a pretty good character, but let's face it, he's no Indiana Jones, and McConaughey isn't the next Harrison Ford. Penelope Cruz was pretty bland in this. Not sorry that I rented it.

This movie just needed to swing more in The Mummy's direction. I don't care about the dialog or whatever, but the story's villians weren't very fun and the lead characters didn't really have any chemistry with each other.
I liked the opening though. A movie about the metalic subs of the Civil war would be pretty cool.

Blech! I'm glad it wasn't more like The Mummy. I liked these characters just fine- they were sort of atypical and the chemistry wasn't forced. It was relaxed.... there wasn't much, but it worked.

Yes, it's not something that you'll regret seeing, and you may even really like it. It's popcorn entertainment, and not bad, just nothing that I felt was great.
