Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I
8/10 -> B
I would gladly sit through another 2 and a half hours if I had the option because this movie went by pretty fast. I thought this was as good as this first part could've been and maybe even slightly better. I thought the middle part was wonderful. They captured the whole desperation feeling about not being able to find horcruxes, not knowing where they stand etc. very good. I wouldn't mind if it went even longer. I thought the scenes were on the verge of being poetic even. The dance scene was phenomenal (great song selection didn't hurt it either).
It's the first time that I actually think the movie came close to the feeling Rowling managed to create in her books. So it's not surprising that both the beginning and the end part were generally weaker moments for me. Those parts played on rules set by previous movies - flashy direction, lots of F/X, too vividly created characters... I actually wish Yates was the one who was setting the whole thing up. The whole camping scenes, where for the first time he had completely free hands in the whole HP universe to do something different were just as bleak and real as I always imagined HP world to be like.
I'm very much looking forward to Part 2.

Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I
The snake perhaps? That would have been extremely uncomfortable in 3D. I wonder if they chose not to go 3D because kids would probably shit their pants if it was popping up at them.
Quite awesome, I can't call it the best, but I'd need part II to say that, I think I could have easily gone for round 2 right there, truly great, and dark as shit. The first 20 minutes were downright crazy dark and sad. I think I would have preferred to see Mad Eye Moody though, I hate when things like that happen like they did in the film. After the 2nd film the Potter films have just ranged from different levels of awesome.

One small note, Im usually loving everything fx and costume wise Potter, but Bill Nighy looked absolutely ridiculous. What an odd choice to start the movie, and what happened to the other guy? Did the actor die or something?

It's all newspapers pre-DH. One at the end of Order of the Phoenix reads "Minister to resign?", while there's a headline on the page Snape is reading in HBP saying that the new Minister of Magic promises swift action.

Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
It's like most of you saw a different film than I did. I thought it was terribly edited, badly paced, lacking in suspense where it should have had a lot of it and sucked at scene transitions and basic exposition for those in the audience who weren't up on the story so far. Whoever edited this should not be allowed to work in that field again.
But the actors as usual did their roles from decent (the main three) to excellent (pretty much everyone else), and the cinematography was great. I don't regret seeing it but they made a mistake not continuing to have more talented directors after the fourth one.
For what it's worth, I read and mostly enjoyed the novel (had some nitpicks but overall it was good) when it first came out. But it needed a lot better exposition for those who didn't. And my god those tent scenes went on for fucking ever, when they skipped over and rushed through so many better scenes earlier and again rushed through all the Malfoy mansion stuff near the end.

Ended up being a solid entry into the series. Poor Dobby . 7/10 ( B )

Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
This one actually pleasantly surprised me. It had a good sense of style and tone to it (sort of like a post-apocalyptic wizarding world), and it actually did something with the practically non-existent story of the book.
I still think they could've fit everything into one movie, though.

Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Okay, this along with Deathly Hallows are certainly the best of the Yates films. They kept mostly to the book, but there were a few things that bugged me. Dudley's redemption may have been on the bluray, but it would have been nice to see some closure for the character. It also irks me that they brought back Viktor Krum, but then cut his scene and didn't even include them on the bluray. Also, Lupin has to have been the character that I can't explain why the films butchered his storyline so much. He is such a presence in the books, but is such an afterthought her. I thought they had cut his son's story line, but then they make the "But Remus, your son?" line in the second Deathly Hallows film, and it made me want to shoot myself. They also should have explained the Voldemort taboo. Overall, very good, and it makes me wonder what could have been done with 4-6 if they had been split.

Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Of all the final novels split to maximize profit, this still feels like the only film that pulls it off creatively. It feels distinctly different from HALLOWS PT. 2, and tells its own story (even if it's a downer because Voldemort finds the Elder Wand).

This is a great film. It has grown on me significantly since I first saw it. I easily prefer it to part 2. Love the atmosphere of dread and the wealth of character detail.

Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
This is EASILY the best of the entire series (maybe because it is the darkest and most mature entry). It really gets better and better with repeat viewings and I love the tone and the performances. Also the cinematography is gorgeous and in my opinion it includes some of the franchise's most powerful scenes.

Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
I definitely could have seen them cutting down the camping a bit more in the middle and giving more screen time to Lupin and the Dursleys, but aside from that, it is very good.

Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
I don't really think the Dursleys are necessary. I do like the deleted scene with Petunia showing some humanity towards Harry that's in the extended version but it ruins the flow of the opening sequence, which is honestly one of my favorites of the entire series (re-introducing all the characters and then ending with Hermione walking down the street after erasing her parents' memories).
