 Re: Orphan
Partly creepy and atmospheric, and partly "OMG WTF is this crap?" ridiculousness, Orphan is kind of a joy to behold in some ways. I don't know if I've been quite this entertained in a while. Despite so much of the film being in a previously unreached dimension of over-the-top, the acting from Vera Farmiga and young Isabelle Fuhrman is excellent for this sort of movie. I would highly recommend it for the immense camp value. B-

Only a B-? This was far more entertaining than that grade would indicate. It was awesome. And what do you mean "for this kind of movie?" Horror movies can't have good acting just like any other movie? The acting from the two leads in this would be considered very good for any kind of movie. And the filmmaking style was brilliant. That scene on the playground where Esther is stalking that bitchy girl is genius in how it twists the conventions of the horror genre and applies them to a different "playground."

 Re: Orphan
Too bad you only gave it a B- Libs. I thought it did a terrific job walking the fine line between being serious and campy, and it worked wonderfully on both accounts. The movie was downright hilarious at times, in a good way of course. Easily some of the most fun I've had at the movies this year (second only to Drag Me To Hell). I'm glad you saw it though, and that you didn't hate it.

"Alright bitch" At least this movie took a stale idea (evil kid) and did something deranged, twisted, and different, something comedies and especially rom-coms, don't bother even trying 99% of the time.

The only reason your against avatar (oh, and nice joke there Billy) is because other people like it. Your a 9 year old rebel with a particularly foul mouth. When Esther tried to tart up and get in Dad's pants I expected the police to burst in and arrest me for child porn.
Solid stuff and the twist is much easier to swallow when you have the build-up to give it context.

 Re: Orphan
There were a couple of good scenes, but I guessed the twist during the film, and with such great WOM, I went in expecting something better than I got.

 Re: Orphan
6/10 -> C
I guessed the twist pretty early on. I don't find it laughable (and I don't know why most people think it is), I actually think it's a fairly good twist because it's a disorder that exists and no one pays any attention to, so it could actually produce real chills to people. But I wasn't all that thrilled with the movie itself.
I'm all for setting up characters and scenes, but the movie is too slow and the culmination is pretty standard fare for a horror - stabbing, shooting and then a bit of a drowning in a frozen lake (that's actually not something I see in horrors a lot, but it's been done a lot of times in other movies) so it's not really a pay off and the movie can't benefit solely on the big twist.
The thing that really bothered me is when the music would suggest that someone is behind the character and actually no one would be there. The movie used that trick too often. Maybe they wanted to show that they're rejecting the usual "how-it's-done" in horrors, but the rest of the movie doesn't suggest that.
The strongest part of the movie is acting, which is rare for a horror. It's especially tricky if you need a creepy kid, then you really need to get the casting right. Isabelle Fuhrman was simply stunning as Esther. Others were good too, but Isabelle stole the show completely.
I expected more. Considering that not many horrors have good WOM.

 Re: Orphan
Question; did you guys find the twist ridiculous / stupid because it's not possible? I happened to personally know someone who looks EXACTLY like 14 year olds while he's actually a 27 year old guy. I remember the first day I met him, I though someone brought their little brother to the college. Must be tough for him. ... As for 'Orphan' the movie, I was expecting a ridiculously bad fun movie. Instead, I've got a really entertaining film that's real solid as a film-making. The balance of humors, suspense, horror, drama is pitch perfect. Everything is surprisingly above than average. Isabelle Fuhrman is suprb, two thumbs up! The character of Esther is creepy because Fuhrman never forgets to keep it real, not just some overly-acted mind-disturbing character that you know will never be found in real life. And not just that, she's a big part that made the twist worked, everything makes sense. The film also contains some truly disturbing images, and I just watched Antichrist two days ago! Can't believe this is a work from a guy who directed 'House of Wax'. A-*can't believe I'm giving this A-*
