Re: Precious: Based on the Novel by Sapphire
jmovies wrote: Precious is a poorly acted film as well as one of the worst edited ones ever made. Gabourey Sidibe mumbles the entire way through and even though some of the obstacles she goes through are very harsh, she doesn't add the kind of emotion needed for that character. Mo'Nique doesn't even begin to deserve her Best Supporting Actress wins as it seems that she is not only reciting word for word what's going on in the script with no creativity, but also just adds in the emotion needed for a particular scene and quickly lose it when its no longer needed. When she gets emotional near the end it obviously is forced out and you really don't care for her at all in the end. The editing though is horrific. There are too many scenes to be numbered where the scenes just cut without any sense of why the next scene is already occurring. Also uses of cross dissolve and other editing tools are not needed and mess up the feel of the film even more. Plus editing crew, please learn how to use green screens without it being obvious that you're using one! There are some emotional parts here and there but in the end all the film's wrongs makes any emotional part useless. All these nominations and wins are undeserved. 1/2* Are you certain you watched this film? Are you sure you didn't watch a tyler perry movie and mistook him for Mo'Nique? Do not misunderstand, I strongly dislike this film, however that is due to the writer, director, and lead actress. The two supporting actresses (Mo'Nique and Paula Patton) are really the only worthwhile pieces of the movie.

If I were watching it at home by myself I'd have turned the subtitles on, but I was watching it with a friend and people usually think I'm weird if I want the subtitles on . I almost always turn the subtitles on, unless it's the rare movie with consistently clear dialogue audio such as Up in the Air. Being 50% deaf is the reason I do that and given that Precious is hard for those with nearly 100% hearing to understand, I know I'd have the subtitles on from the start. My hearing is fine and I still watch everything with the subtitles on. I think you miss things without them.

Mind-blowing, the final scene with Mo'nique is just... Precious

Thankfully I wasn't let down by this one. Lately I've been underwhelmed by many films I missed over the past couple years.

2009 was a terrific year for Best Picture nominees. Sadly, Precious wasn't one of them and I am, to date, shocked that it has won Best Adapted Screenplay over far far more deserving candidates like...well, you know, all other nominees!
Precious isn't a bad film, but it really plays out so much by the numbers as your usual "don't give up in the shitty circumstances, there is always hope!" movie. Only there wasn't. At the end of the film, Precious was still incredibly overweight, had AIDS and no perspective in life either. It must be one of the most depressing "inspirational" movies ever.
It is helped by good performances. I wouldn't award any of the cast with Oscars, but Gabby Sidibe and (shock!) Mo'nique all did very good jobs. Actually, I found Sidibe to be better because Mo'nique's character was too close to caricature for my taste. Of course there's the famous monologue at the end, but I didn't find it to be nearly as emotional or "real as most have described it to be. It's fine scene, but it did not amaze me. What did, however, that Mariah Carey actually didn't suck either. Yeah, quite terrific.
Lee Daniels did a decent job directing. There are some quite nice choices here and others that feel misguided, but on the whole it was a good effort. It's a well-meaning film with solid performances, but it is nowhere as good as the praise it has received and ultimately, it is forgettable.

What a perfect reason for this to get bumped.

Mo’Nique and queen Gabby were sensational. Bullshit we still get backlash for films. Like Crash, Juno, etc. Crash was amazing and I’m glad it won the Oscar in 2006. Idk why people were so shocked, was it unexpected?!
