Median does not tell the full story.
He got a job in a BIG market city.
$40K would have been his starting salary. And he was already a journalist/columnist for 10? years. I make $20~K a year and have a nice house. I'm sure his salary could well afford that.

It's definitely realistic for a high-profile journalist to be able to afford that kind of home.

 Re: Marley & Me
Based on the raves, I expected more.
First half of the movie, what does a crazy dog do and how it affects the house > seen it before Beethoven.
Second half of the movie > what happens when you have a dog about 10 years old and there are a bunch of young children around.
Overall it had ups and downs but still the whole movie played out as expected with no surprises.

 Re: Marley & Me
I'm a sucker for dogs (getting my first dog this summer, and I'm really excited), so yeah... I really liked it.
It's not a great film, but it's heartwarming and entertaining. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston had good chemistry, and the end (which I didn't know ahead of time, but basically assumed before seeing the film at all) really got me.

This film really encapsulates why I really hate dogs and dislike pets in general. But I think the film is amazing is because of the performances of the two leads. I have never been this impressed by Owen Wilson. i also think Jennifer Aniston was incredible.
I hate comparing, but this is a much better film than Wendy and Lucy. And i think the two performances here outshone Michelle Williams, who was also very good.
My only problem with this movie was the character of Sebastian and the odd scene where it tries to be funny. (specifically taking the dog off the leash at the beach, dog trainer)

Do they really show a close-up of marley getting euthanized? Like, really? That's Terms of Endearment levels of shamelessness.

I think it and the unanimously positive audience reactions to it are fascinating.

The audience isn't cheering what happens to Marley.

I have talked to no less than three friends who loved the movie and the ending. All three, for some weird reason I haven't yet been able to understand, also went to see it with their mothers. I don't get it. Something's up with this thing.

 Re: Marley & Me
My mother and brother and sister all read the book and loved it, but flat-out refuse to see the movie because of the leads.
I mean, can you get more unappealing than Mr. Unfunny Adult Emo and Mrs. Butterface?

They're all people who like watching good movies? I mean, really. Even a snob could do a lot worse than Marley & Me. trixster wrote: My mother and brother and sister all read the book and loved it, but flat-out refuse to see the movie because of the leads.
I mean, can you get more unappealing than Mr. Unfunny Adult Emo and Mrs. Butterface? Well, your family is missing out. I'm not really an Owen Wilson fan but I think he did well here. And I thought Jennifer Aniston was outstanding in this, frankly. She really handled the dramatic material well.

 Re: Marley & Me
Very solid life movie. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston like others said were amazing. The movie has some of the most incredible dog training I've ever seen; you really feel like this is one special dog. The music is also something I highly enjoyed. I recommend picking up the tracks "Heading Home" and "Two Year Montage," great stuff.

 Re: Marley & Me
This would have to be my "personal favorite" movie of the year. I saw it three times in theaters. It's one of the best tearjerkers I've seen in forever. Both Owen and Aniston were great, especially Owen. I'm normally not a huge fan of his, but I LOVED him here. 9/10 (A) from me, though it's a perfect 10 in my heart .
