Definitely not Excel. The only people that like this movie have to be on some serious drugs, and are bugged out by all the colors.

Really, really, really bad.

It single-handedly almost killed the Batman franchise.

Watched it the other day. Its frustrating, where as Superman IV had everything against it, but had heart. This film had everything. Great Cast, Great Special Effects for its time, 140 million in 1997. Good comic character. Just piss poor exectution.

Kilmer wanted to return, which they should have done, every Batman film came out about 3 years later, and this one came out just over 2 years later. If they waited for Kilmer, maybe they would have spent more time on development. The loss of Burton is also Schumacher's pass to do what he wanted.

It's not laughably bad, far from it, but its almost as if it was made for people who take Shroons. Its so rediculous. Batman is label happy, The batman logo is literally everywhere in the cave, and appears like 6 times on the Batmobile alone. Though you can watch it for that matter, because its so rediculous and short. And there are few hints of a Good Batman film (Ironically its when theres no crazy colors in sight)

Post Re: Batman & Robin
This is on TNT right now. I've decided to sit down and watch this all the way through for the first time since the original DVD came out, whenever the hell that was. The only thing I really remember about my reaction towards the film the first couple of times I saw it was that I didn't think it was awful. Even though I was ten or so I was able to recognize that this was easily the worst of the original four. Ten or eleven years later now I can easily say that I was giving it an undeserved break. I'm not even half way through the film and I just feel embarassed. I feel embarassed for pretty much everyone involved (minus Chris O'Donnell - his career deserved to go away). I feel embarassed that I'm watching this near five in the morning. I even feel slightly embarassed that I'm currently writing this. And I'm not even to the part where Batgirl comes into play.

What was Joel Schumacher thinking? Honestly. Actually, forget about him. What was Warner Brothers thinking? I understand greenlighting a film with Arnold and Clooney (even before he was really Clooney) going head to head, and I understand that Forever did well (actually my favorite of the original four). But when they got a hold of the dailies, what was their thought process like? Did they actually like what they saw? If they didn't, how did Schumacher convince them that he should keep going? Did everyone involved think this was going to work out well in the end? It's essentially the 60s TV series brought to the big screen. The cheap special effects, the over-the-top acting with an emphasis on beating us over the head with one lame punchline after the next, the set decoration/design, I mean one thing after the other just comes across as cheezy. And this thing cost $125 million to make!

Everyone aside from Clooney (if he had been given better material I actually think he would've made for a decent Bruce Wayne) is giving a career worst performance here, Uma Thurman especially. While I don't think she is the most beautiful woman on the planet, she is attractive. And yet based on her performance here, I don't think she could be sexy even if a naked Monica Bellucci sat on her face.

Yet the film still made close to $110 million back in '97 dollars. Thankfully it wasn't enough to give us a part five and eventually lead to us getting the 100x better Nolan series, but the fact that it made that much money is appalling.

I mean just scene after scene just becomes one embarassment after the next. As I'm writing this Coolio just entered the film? Really? Coolio? Way to be hip with the times Joel. And now we've got a random mortorcycle chase. I guess they thought audiences would find this to be enthralling somehow.

Random funny moment: While being frozen by Freeze some cop just had the time to yell out, "MY LUNGS ARE FREEZING!". Thanks Schumacher for letting us know exactly what was going on.

And for the life of me I can't remember the last time I've heard such an awful score. How hard is it to adapt Elfman's theme? All Elliot Goldenthal had to do was just blare the theme if he ever found himself trapped into a corner. But no, he just wants to blare the saxophone whenever something interesting happens. Note to filmmakers: jazzy music does not make your movie interesting. Actual storytelling usually gets the job done.

Thank god for Nolan.

This movie was such crap. I was 12 when I saw it; I remember the next I re-watched Batman Forever and thought that it was so much better than this shit.

Same here. I had a 10 Birthday to see this. I was a big Arnold fan even then. But wow it sucked.

Looking back. It's almost a marvel at how poorly the studio did this film. Even Forever which I enjoy, seeing the deleted scenes I'd love to see the darker Burton cut of it. Warner Brothers and DC have just never really worked well together. At least there was enough big talent involved in the first 2 Batman and Superman films that they were the classics they were.

Personally I don't like Burton's films very much. But to be fair, I never saw the first one in theaters, and I'm not sure when I saw Returns. I did like Forever a lot as kid and even today I find it quite an alright movie. I just rewatched Batman Returns on TV the other day and.... I don't like it much. It's so dark and semi-serious and yet so silly at the same time. I really don't like the style and atmosphere of this movie.

Mortarcycle or Mordorcycle?

Both sound like better movies than Batman & Robin.

Brad, that wouldn't have been worth the effort when I made the post close to four years ago, let alone if I made it today. :funny:

This film and Batman Forever are probably the only ones that truly capture the vibe of how silly this whole Batman thing is. They are like proper live-action cartoons. I love them. Made in a time when everything wasn't trying so hard to be serious. Actually, if DC went back to this type of film-making, they might be able to compete with Marvel. I mean, they couldn't do any worse than they currently are!

Just rewatchedvit and Schwarzenegger and Thurman really ham it up and make it more enjoyable than it would be otherwise. The rest of the film is utter shit, Robin and Batgirl must be the worst characters ever put to screen. But I can't say that Mr. Freezes ice puns didn't make me mike or that I didn't love Poison Ivy's silly seductress.

Still C-.

This is not a good film, but there are redemptive qualities to it. It's really in a similar league to Forever, IMO. There's nothing really that worse about it. I really like Poison Ivy and George Clooney, like Val Kilmer, actually gets stuff to do as Batman, unlike Keaton who really did very little in his films taking a backseat to the villains.
