I actually think the writing and humor and the Tony Stark, not Iron Man sequences, are the best part of this movie. I love Robert Downey, Jr.

To me, its in a similar position the X-Men franchise was. A solid though not neccessairly amazing start to a franchise that leaves room for A LOT. On the sequel and the I am Iron Man line. Is that how the comic books are and is there any other super-hero with a known identity?

 Re: Iron Man
Man I can't even imagine how bad this movie would have been without RDJ, but since he is there, the movie is a hell of a lot of fun. As far as Marvel movies go, its only behind the first 2 X-men films and leagues above the rest, including Spiderman. Its so nice to see a middle aged superhero again.
The rest of the movie was kind of iffy with paperthin villains and supporting cast and a very familiar plot. Bridges was serviceable as was Howard, and Paltrow was pretty but kind of out of place. I was actually surprised how little of Iron man there was, and I think that was a good thing. Effects were good. Overall, I'm not sure how much replay value it will have, but I think a sequel will only be better in this good start to a new franchise.

 Re: Iron Man
Oh yes Iron Man was awesome. Such a huge step up from the two comic book movies last year. (Spiderman 3 sucked and Ghost Rider was terrible) Robert Downey Jr. was fucking great. He IS Tony Stark. The special effects were incredible and the supporting cast was great.
Nick Fury was awesome!!! Love Sam Jackson!

 Re: Iron Man
A solid, entertaining flick.
However, after the reviews and hype, it was a bit of a disappointment. Robert Downey Jr. was great, but comparisons to Jack Sparrow and rumors of an Oscar nomination are going WAY too far. He's playing a variation of Robert Downey Jr., it's just that this is a much bigger film than what he usually gets involved in. That said, he was very well-cast here.
Did Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow (or even Terrence Howard) need to be in this movie? Not at all. But they added to the spectacle I guess (although Bridges just wasn't that great of a villain).
The story was good, as I expected, but it was the action that surprised me. They were smart by having the epic moments play without any music, and some of the effects were just awesome (especially the stuff he did when he lands in that town after or before battling off the jets).
Sets up very nicely for a sequel, and while my friends and I agree that it wasn't great, we all enjoyed it enough that we'll go see whatever comes next.
I guess if Spider-man and Batman are the big serious superhero franchises, this can be the big lighthearted superhero franchise, something that Fantastic Four really failed at.

 Re: Iron Man
As superhero "origin story" films go, I think this is one of the very best to date (the only better one I can think of at the moment is Batman Begins, if we choose to count it). Much of it can be attributed to just how different the movie is. It's refreshing to see a big superhero movie that does its best to avoid any kind of formula at all costs. Robert Downey, Jr. is the force that drives this movie. While it's not his best performance (it doesn't match up to his role as Paul Avery in Zodiac), it's a really solid turn that proves once and for all that he has the talent to carry an entire movie on his shoulders. The rest of the cast offers solid support, especially Gwyneth Paltrow, who serves as a frequent scene partner of Downey, Jr. The two have an excellent chemistry made all the better by a mostly "professional" relationship the two seem to have. The action is of the badass variety, starting out raw during the captivity segment and eventually becoming a big special effects extravaganza by the third act. This is popcorn entertainment of a very high variety, and I'm really looking forward to the sequel we'll be getting in two or three years.

Spider-Man serious? Dude it is the most melodramatic piece of medicority ever made. Now Iron Man is the first good Marvel Superhero film I have ever seen (excluding X-Men which I have never seen) and rivals the Batman series, though honestly The Dark Knight will be better. A

 Re: Iron Man
I just loved this film. Robert Downey Jnr was completely excellent. He really is the driving force behind this movie. I thought Gwyneth was great also.
I was shocked to see how little Iron Man turned up in the film but for me that made it that much more intriguing.
Great to see Sam Jackson show up for a cameo too.
An excellent start to the summer thats for sure.

 Re: Iron Man
Iron Man kicks all kinds of ass. If you look close enough you can Downey Jr chewing the scenery as he embodies Tony Stark to T. I had my doubts when I first heard he was cast to be Iron Man, but now I can't see anyone else pulling this off. He ongoing quips and remarks are priceless. I think Stan Winston and ILM should all be given Oscars because the suit for Iron Man was made to perfection. His flying sequences were all top notch work. All in all this was my favorite superhero/comic movie second only to Batman Begins. And judging by the way of theater reaction as well as reviews, I think the legs on this are going to be pretty strong with a sequel already in the works for 2010. AP.S. I thought his interaction with that machine that blowed smoke at him were hilarious.

I loved it. I pretty much agree with what others have said - it has its flaws, but what superhero film doesnt. Robert Downey Jr delivers one of the finest blockbuster leading performances ever. He's just perfect as Stark. Its what a comic book film should be - fun but also offer character depth and humor without going over the top. Visual Effects are top notch. Deserves every dollar it makes. The sequel is set up to be even better.

 Re: Iron Man
I'm trying to decide whether this is the best comic book film I've seen or not. Another viewing is needed. But seriously, it's fucking fantastic. Robert Downey Jr. makes the film, giving the best performance I've seen in a comic book role. All the other performances are solid as well, something hard to find in ANY film like this. Often very funny, great special effects, and one of the most badass endings ever ("The truth is... I am Iron Man.").

I don't know where this would rank overall amongst superhero films for me. However, taking all the sequels and reboots out of the account, this may be the best. It's not the best overall, though. (That's a title I'd give to Batman Begins, followed closely by Spider-Man 2.)

Magnus wrote: In terms of comic-book movies, this probably ranks in my top 5 but its not near the top 3. Top 3 is BB, X2, and SM2 in that order. This probably ties with Batman for me. Need to see this one more time to break the tie. It's a great superhero movie, but not amazing like BB, X2, or SM2.
I think the thing with me from calling this amazing is that the film was a bit too dependent on Downey Jr and F/X, which both were great. But the supporting stuff around those two to me were just good, not great. BB, X2, and SM2 to me had great stuff around the hero and action.
But of course, I did not expect this to have great supporting stuff because this was the first one in the franchise, just like X1 and SM1, which suffered simliar problems as this. I agree with this statement. BB and X2 and even SM2 all had really good supporting performances to the stars. Especially concerning the villains who were all top notch. Liam Neeson, Brian Cox, Magneto and Alfred Molina as the Doc. Those were fantastic performances by some good villains whereas Jeff Bridge just isn't that good a villain to me but I still think this first IM is a great setup for future things to come. BTW, I'm such a nerd today as I spent 40$ on those super hero marvel packs. Yikes! Also, I watched this again on Saturday with my pops and he absolutely Loved the film. He thought it was one worth buying on dvd and he was all interested in getting an IM model after the film. I think the crowd I saw it with enjoyed it as well and this time I sat through the 5 mins of credits to see the final final scene and that scene proves that Samuel Jackson can do ANYTHING and make it look badass.

 Re: Iron Man
So I saw this a few hours ago. Loved it. Downey Jr. is fantastic, Stark is such a fresh, unique character, and Downey played him brilliantly. He IS this movie. Although Paltrow was excellent as Pepper Potts (love the name), she was more likeable than MJ from Spider-Man. The action was sweet, the story was solid, it was really cool (the gadgets made me drool), the effects were great, in that sense it didn't dissapoint. What was dissapointing was the very lame villain, cheesy dialogue and one-liners at the end, which prevented this from being amazing, just borderline-great. And the score, which was forgettable unlike Batman, Superman or Spider-Man. Still not as good as X-Men, X2, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins, Batman or Batman Returns, but better than every other superhero film. A very promising start to the next "hot" franchise. =
