I saw this in theater five tmes. That's $30 bucks. What 13 year old wastes $30 bucks on the same movie? This movie dragged me into cinema and actually changed my life.

Incredibly powerful. Both death scene's struck a chord of emotion that hasn't ressonated since. Amazing performances from everyone. "All you can do is decide to do with the time that is given to you." is a personal favorite movie quote of mine. It certainly ranks with the celebrated Star Wars quotes, as well as a few random ones from movies of the years, but it's definitely in the top ten somewhere.

It also has the best production for a movie I've ever seen. Outstanding Make-Up, Costumes, Visual Effects, etc. Whether the movie was actually good can be debated, but I don't see how anyone can deny it's stunning production values. The pacing of the movie, however, felt VERY rushed. Of course, the movie had to set up nine hours of film, and it took place over the time of many months, while TT and ROTK (except for the end)take place over a few weeks maybe.

I give it an A+, second best of the trilogy, and second best film I've ever seen.

One of the 20 best films ever made!, 13 January 2004

Well, it has been three years since the Lord of the Rings graced our screens. And in those three years, our film landscape has literally been dominated by the series. There have been other films of importance, but nothing that can truly compare with the scope and the sheer grandiose manner in which LOTR has inundated us with. Simply put, there has not been more of a domination of films since Star Wars and its original sequels hogged grosses and headlines from 1977-1983. I am an avid and eager contributor to imdb and I love to write reviews but have purposely not said anything about the three LOTR films because I wanted to wait until I had seen all three of them before commenting on them. Now that I have seen all three, let me begin with FOTR.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a thing of beauty. This is a film that is nearly perfect in every way. Beginning with the characters, this film takes us on a labyrinthine journey through middle earth and part of the fun is meeting everyone that is going to play a part in the story down the road. I think the EE on DVD is an even better film than the theatrical version and if you have a chance to see it, even though it is 4 hours long, do yourself a favour and do so. There is much more explained than what you see in the theatrical version.

FOTR introduces us to the hobbits, to Gandalf the wizard and his adversary Sauruman and ultimately to the great eye, Sauron. Also along the journey to Mordor are Gimli, Legolas, Aragorn and the three other hobbits, Samwies, Merry and Pippin.

The one element of FOTR that struck me is that it is a film about discovery. The journey begins here and it is that much more fun to see the genesis of the story and the genesis of the characters. In each of the three films, each character grows a bit at a time. In FOTR, we get to see the start of this journey. Frodo is just a scared hobbit thrust into a great deed here. In ROTK he grows into an honourable and stoic character, but in here, he is scared and feels alone, even with his fellowship of nine.

Perhaps one of the main reasons that makes this film so much better than the last two, in my opinion, is that it perfectly blends action and character into a beautiful narrative and it makes you feel for the characters you are watching. Gandalf's fate in this film is a heartwrenching scene and Boromir's is even tougher to get through. I shed a few tears at the end of this film.

FOTR should have won a plethora of Oscars in 2001 and it is a shame that it lost to A Beautiful Mind. I think that in 10 years, no one will remember this as Ron Howard's film that took the Oscar. But FOTR will be remembered as one of the best films of the last 20 years. There is a bit of everything in the film and for those that crave excellence in film, they need look no further than Fellowship of the Ring. I have it at number 9 on my all time list and that is saying something. This is truly a remarkable film. I have always thought that the books were just okay stories but to see what Jackson and his team of writers has managed to do, is truly remarkable. In the book, the best part of the story was the meeting of the Fellowship. This was at the council of Elrond and it is also one of the best scenes in the film. This is where we get to meet Boromir and Legolas and Gimli. In the book, I remember the council scene being close to 100 pages in length. Much of it was just talk and in the film, Jackson has managed to keep much of the intrigue with scenes like this, but condensing them to fit into a 3 hour film. This is just one of the nuances of the film that make it such a fine piece of film making.

While I still believe that Star Wars is the best fantasy series ever filmed, at least Lord of the Rings is a voice for today's generation and they have a film that they can relate to and call their own so that in 30 years from now the next great fantasy epic is unleashed, the debate can rage all over again, which is the best of all time?

FOTR is one of the best films of all time.

10/10

Good movie, easily the best out of the three. It actually has a story unlike the other 2! Gasp! The battle sequences are nice and not too long unlike the next 2 and it's just a great movie all around. B +

Just watched this for the first time in a looong time (the EE version). Excellent film. A masterpiece that is an emotional powerhouse (surpassed in the emotion area only by ROTK), with a truly amazing performance from Ian McKellen as Gandalf. Pretty much everything about it is just fabulous- performances, special effects-you name it. My least favorite of the three movies but it is still a great beginning to the best trilogy in motion picture history.

by far the most entertaining of the three, but ROTK does have more quality. FOTR seemed to not suffer in any department, but it did suffer a bit from from Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Viggo performances, and really suffered from Orlando Bloom's performance, but it is a good thing for Ian McKellan and a few others (the dwarf did great) who gave Oscar worthy performances.

What a great movie. I don't think I loved this movie as much as with my first viewing. So many great moments! Every actor fits his role perfectly. The last act of the movie is brilliant. Oh and I like the fight at the end more than any battle in TTT or ROTK. Fellowship (EE) still stays the best out the three. A Masterpiece and easily in my All-Time Top Ten. A+

Post Fellowship of the Ring: A Media Ogre Movie...
{Here's my original review, written when I first saw the movie back in December 2001:}

I have been to The Fellowship of the Ring and come back again... and the good news is that it doesn't completely suck! However, the bad news is that it plays like a 3 hour episode of Xena: Princess Warrior...

I'm not sure I will ever see a truer movie version of this story (my all-time favorite book)... unfortunately, I think that one of the main strengths of the story is the internal drama experienced by the characters - in the book you are Frodo - in this movie you just watch...

They have retained the dark and melancholy tone of the story and the look, of course, is spectacular -- New Zealand is one of my favorite place on earth -- but it certainly makes you appreciate the FX craftsmanship that went into movies like The Thief of Bagdad (60 years ago) and Jason and the Argonauts (40 years ago) -- FOTR, for all it's supposed cutting edge CGI, really had the same feel as those movies...

I certainly will see the whole series -- you've got to devote 9 hours of your life to this baby -- and actually, I'm sure fans will need to see each episode at least three times (once when it opens, twice when they release the extended version in the Spring with the revised last reel with a couple minute of The Two Towers, and a third time next December to get psyched for the next episode) + probably a marathon 9 hour DVD viewing, or two, on your home theatre system -- so if you're serious about seeing this movie, you're looking at committing a minimum of 48 hours of your life... (I wonder how many hours it takes to read the book?) (I also wonder who will see it? Non-fans will surely be bogged down by all the story exposition - even at 3 hours there's a lot to cover... Also, at last night's first showing there was no lineup, and maybe only 25% of the seats were sold - quite different from Phantom Menace, the last super-hyped movie...)

Perhaps the best thing about this movie is that it will inspire people to read the books... I believe this story has a lot to teach us about our modern day earth and how it is being run... the books were written close to 50 years ago, I first read them 25 years ago, and I saw the movie last night... I believe I am ready to read the four books again and reimmerse myself in the true middle earth experience...

I had saved a spot on my 2001 Top Ten Movies list for Fellowship of the Ring, unfortunately I didn't need it...

2 out of 5.

Fellowship is a masterpiece. Hate TTT, ROTK and KK all you want. You cannot deny the greatness of one FOTR.

That's why I gave it a "2 out of 5" - TTT and ROTK both received a grade of "1 out of 5" - so, yes I agree, compared to those other films FOTR might be described as relatively "great"...

By far the best of the three installments. The only one that manages to maintain an element of suspense, creates affinity to the characters, and is truly engaging. Had it not done all the work for the following two, we wouldn't have cared what happened to anyone, because the later TTT and ROTK are way more riddled with annoying cliche both verbally and visually.

Loved Fellowship of the Ring

It's a masterpiece and one of the 10 best films ever made! It's so good that it's fooled some into thinking it's maker is divine.

I have been rewatching all three LotR films lately (Extended; have not watched FotR yet, done TTT and RotK) and I must say I like them a lot less than before.

For RotK, I'm hesitant between a 3.5 stars/5 and 4 stars. For TTT, definitely 3.5. I have a feeling FotR might become by far my favorite.

It was the movie that got me interested in BO, it's my 3rd favourite movie of all-time (behind ROTK and TTT)....it has so much heart and sense of adventure missing in most movies.

Production was top notch, everything exudes quality. This movie really changed Hollywood.

This is far and away the best one of the trilogy. It's not really even close.

Really you take away the Elephants in ROTK, and you have to an idiot to say this is not a better film.

easily the best of the bunch. This is a movie that, following an age where the top-grossing films were all becoming weak in terms of quality (Independence Day, Titanic, and TPM), showed just how possible it is to make a blockbuster that is also an extraordinary film. It's been seven years since I first saw it, yet I still remember the experience vividly, as well as the five-to-ten times that I've watched it since then. As good as entertainment gets.

This is the most epic film I've ever seen. Stunning sights and visuals, the world of Middle-Earth comes to life so magnificently in this film. It's the most beautiful of the three. The performances are all amazing, and the film takes itself so seriously that you can't help be drawn into it. Normally people speaking in made-up languages and saying stuff like "there is a fell voice on the wind" would be cheesy as hell, but Jackson pulls it off in a way that it becomes awe-inspiring. The death scenes are very well-realized, but the production values are the true stars.
