 Re: Blue Velvet
David Lynch really knows how to make something out of nothing. I'm still not sure how such a boring-sounding premise and story could result in such a fascinating film.
A+

Dies war es letztlich, was sie in die Arme eines verheerenden Heroin-Trips flüchten ließ.

 Re: Blue Velvet
I don't really see where the "SO WEIIIRD! ZOMG!" reputation derives from. Trixster bascially said it, noir conventions with a disctinctly surreal touch and very powerful symbolism. The insertion of suburbia subtext is kind of strange in this type of film and definitely strengthens the whole enterprise. But honestly, Frank is a pretty demented take on the common noir criminal but outside of that it's hardly the height of avant-garde film-making. I liked it but certainly not as much as I'd hoped to. Lynch's direction is appealing but the story is relatively straight-forward, the most interesting parts by far being the innocent interactions between romantic teenagers, and the sado-masochistic touches in the more mature romance. But once the story follows the noir arch... I dunno maybe I'm being too critical as Lynch does successfully integrate these elements and produces a complete, riveting film. His symbolism is admirable, largely subtle but present, and then the brief new-wave flourishes of the candle and such. Okay, I liked it a lot, but it is not quite deserving of the some of the acclaim given by people here who seem to largely be following a hype machine, the pretty colors/textures, and the fact that it was weird but within their restrictions of how bizarre a movie can get (remind anyone of a recent ballerina flick?)
