I mean structurally the film is a complete mess but its so utterly absurd I found myself not being to bothered by that. Oh and I'm back in the camp that beleives Bradley actually watches the film's he reviews because he is right about how terrible Bellucci is. Overall thou I'm like Arsi I still don't know what grade to give it, A+ F? Who the hell knows?

 Re: Shoot 'Em Up
I think if this movie had done away with the plot completely I would have liked it a lot more. The attempt at a story is so silly and so terrible that it really drags the terrifically over-the-top action sequences down. Just non-stop gunfights would have been more enjoyable and a lot more watchable. The performances range from incredibly wild (Giamatti) to fairly solid (Owen) to downright terrible (Bellucci); all three, however, are hampered by the frequently horrible dialogue, which also makes for some pretty lame comedy. Still, the action is so energetic, so ridiculous, and so utterly unconcerned with being serious that it makes the film at least watchable, but nothing more.

Now this is a bad ass action flick. A non-stop adrenaline ride. If you can ignore Bellucci's pretty awful performance (Giamatti and Owen were great, though) and some of the cheesy dialogue, you'll love it.

B-, it was both enjoyable and unsatisfying, overlong but too short. It walks on a thin line berween brillaince and trashiness.

 Re: Shoot 'Em Up
I forgot to mention how much I enjoyed the baby as a minor character in Shoot 'Em Up - - his reactin shots are terrific - - the scene where Clive Owen is decribing the gun to him is a classic!
[BTW... even though the baby was mostly animatronic or whatever, he was still a noticeably better actor than Monica Bellucci. Has she ever had a great acting role in any movie? (And don't say The Matrix, because anyone can seem like a great actor standing next to Keanu Reeves...)]

There's not much to add that hasn't been mentioned before. It's a ridiculous movie, but in a "good" way. The action sequences are quite insane and great at first, though I admit that after a while they get a bit tiresome. Clive Owen is perfect for the lead role, while Paul Giamatti easily delivers the most over-the-top performance of the year. Both played well off each other.
One thing that I didn't like was how cheap the whole thing looked. I mean in conecpt the film is similar to Crank, and their budgets probably were similar as well, but Crank managed to make the action scenes look a helluva lot better. Probably because it wasn't as "ambitious" with them as Shoot 'Em Up. I wish they had a somewhat bigger budget to polish some scenes.
They also could have worked on the innovative action scenes. The first couple of kills with a carrot were cool and funny, but once you get the same thing for the third time it gets rather redundant. I'm sure they could have done better than that. The storyline for the whole thing is as stupid and inane that I was asking myselkf why the hell they actually bothered explaining it. I think they would've been better off if they had just let it be.
Overall, it is a fairly enjoyable, insane, little flick, but it certainly doesn't possess the same rewatchability and fun factor as Crank. I would watch the sequel, though, mostly for Owen's badass character.

 Re: Shoot 'Em Up
SHOOT 'EM UP - 7/10 (B-)
It was pretty cool, yet I also found myself looking forward to the end and I don't know why. I guess because there's only so much of over-the-top, completely unbelievable action sequences one can take. Clive Owen was cool, and sexy, and I liked that his character liked animals. I didn't like Monica Bellucci though and wish they had chosen an actress with some actual charisma for her role. I don't like Paul Giamatti either. He's just such an unappealing actor; always playing the same old creeps.
Still, it's a good action movie that deserved to do better at the Box Office. Hopefully it will find its audience on DVD.

Ironically Crank cost only 12 million while Shoot Em Up cost 46 million.

I really enjoyed the film. Its so over the top that its extremely entertaining. Nice homage to Bugs Bunny too. I hope they make more movies of this type. Its sure entertaining as hell. Paul Giamonti should be villians more often. Think of the movie as GTA meets Takishi Miike. This movie I would say is ahead of its time although Crank is somewhere in there. Its too bad it didnt get the same recognition as Borat and 300 A++

 Re: Shoot 'Em Up
An awful film. I did find myself laughing a lot, but I just think it's because my friend was being absolutely tortured by it. Barely 10 minutes would go by before he said "This could be the worst movie I have ever seen." Cracked me up. When it ended he said he was angry at me for having brought it over.
I didn't enjoy it much either. 1/2 a star

SHOOTEM UP
Grade - B
I rented this not to long ago and comparing this to Crank I found this much more interesting and exciting to watch. I though the action scenes here are much more memorable and well done. I wasn't expecting Giammati to fit this role but he did a decent job. There are just a lot of interesting moments throughout this flick. It's a worthy dvd rental vs Crank.

The potential was there but the film didn't deliver. Rorshach you make some good points about what the film tries to and does accomplish but I just wasn't a fan of this movie.
