I agree, That took me off guard at first too, as Gene Wilder would say "Scratch that, reverse them"

HOLY FUCK. Pretty much the reaction I had throughout the entire film. I had doubts about this film and Bruce Willis (even if I was rather hyped about the film anyways), but oh boy, Live Free or Die Hard blew all my expectations out of the water. Easily the most entertaining and action-packed film in years. You can fully see the $130m (or whatever) budget in this film - the action scenes are fuckin' amazing. You haven't seen everything in the trailers, trust me. It's so well-paced between the action scenes and the other parts of the film, you're always at the edge of your seat. Bruce Willis is definitely back, bringing the same attitude he's always had. And, for the record, the famous line, even if slightly censored, works perfectly. I'm not even disappointed by how it's said because of the context of what happened, so yeah, PG-13 or not, it's kick-ass. Best of the year (if I haven't made it perfectly clear), and the best action flick in God knows how long. A+

1. Die Hard - A+
2. Live Free or Die Hard - A+
3. Die Hard with a Vengeance - A
4. Die Hard 2: Die Harder - B+

An excellent action film! I loved every minute of it and was not disappointed in the slightest. Although the "PG-13" rating may initially seem like a cause for concern, there is really nothing to worry about here - since this film features more action than either one of the two sequels. Bruce Willis is awesome here and completely gets back into character as the iconic John McClane. Justin Long is also a great addition, providing some comic relief and also proving to be an earnest character to root for. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is also quite good, delivering a sassy and commanding performance. The direction and special effects are top-notch, and the action sequences are nothing short of amazing. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Anyways, while this isn't my favorite of the series, it is right up there with the first and third film in terms of quality. It is easily the best all-out action film of the year, and I am almost certain that it will remain that way. Highly recommended! I can't wait to see it again.

I'll gather my thoughts overnight. I'm thinking about a B right now. It falters in some parts, but is absolutley on top of its game at other points.

I dunno, I'm still not getting my hopes up too high. Never really been a huge pure action fan, explosion spectacle, no matter how well done, has never been purely enough for me.

Like Gun said, strike that, reverse it. (Actually he didn't say that, but you get it)

That's what I get for writing too quickly.

Do keep your hopes reined in (just so they can be fufilled and surpassed) -- but I wouldn't describe this movie as primarily an "explosion spectacle" -- it is so character driven and the story is so engaging that you'd almost think you were watching a real movie (not to mention that it's as much a comedy as anything)...

Yippie Ki Yea! This is what I have been waiting for all summer a good ole' ass kickin movie. In this summer full of sequels this is the only one that delivered. This was the best action movie since Bad Boys II.

My favorite scene had to be McClain throwing all the Politically correct shit out the window and being a wife beater instead of wearing one  Die biatch die!! :shades:

The only problem I had with the movie is it is going to give me big headaches at work with the huge piece of misinformation they played up with that bit on the BMW Assist. please don't believe everything you see in the movies kids ;) My company provides the services and I just know we are going to get a ton of calls asking for things that will not happen the way they did.

PS, did anyone else notice there were many things in the trailers and TV spots that werent in the film.

After all in the trailer, Willis is pointing a gun when he says Yippie Kay Yea, and theres other scenes like "You sound like a real scary guy"

God I can't wait for an Unrated DVD. That will be all the more amazing and could eclipse Vengence for the 2nd best of the series, but when three of the films have A+ and the other an A- who really cares

Very good movie. I was surprised. When it had the PG-13 rating I figured it was just going to be a cash in only concentrating on making money and not on quality. Great action pieces, funny banter, etc etc etc...

My only squabble is the butchered "Yippi kai yay mother fucker". Instead of editing the line for TV, just get rid of it.

Anyway, in a year of disappointing movies, Live Free or Die Hard stands out.

Best movie of the year so far.

***1/2

I am, I said to get rid of it! It sounded like it was edited for TV. It was odd.

I read it as just another post-modern joke in a very funny movie...

Meh, after reading the raves yesterday on this site i was very hyped to see it, guess i shouldnt have been hyped because it was a let down for me, i thought it had some pretty action sequences and thats it, the plot was stupid and the villains sucked, that is something that made die hard and die hard 3 work, it had good villains, the villains here i didnt care for just like part 2. Oh well.

Its a fun Actionride though it does not match the other Die Hards. Olyphant did play well though his villain character did miss something. As said fun action but not really Die Hard standard

8/10

I agree with the villains part. Olyphant was laughable at times.

After a twelve-year absence, action hero Det. Lt. John McClane (played, of course, by Bruce Willis) returns in the explosion and gunfire-filled Live Free or Die Hard, and he's as unflappable, hard-boiled, and attitudinal as ever. In this film, the old-school policeman finds himself in the center of a 21st century doomsday scenario as he battles a team of cyber-terrorists planning to steal billions of dollars by compromising the technological infrastructure of the United States.

Underworld director Len Wiseman updates and intensifies the Die Hard franchise with this entry. He stages adrenaline-pumping, elaborate action sequences featuring a seamless blend of stunts and visual effects. The highlights include a race through an underground tunnel with multiple cars flying through the air, and a showdown between a F-35 and John McClane at the wheel of a big-rig.

Also top-notch are the performances from the ensemble cast. Bruce Willis reassumes his most iconic role with ease, as if he never left. As primary antagonst Thomas Gabriel, Timothy Olyphant is menacing in a subtle, but effective way, and as sidekick Matt Farrell, comedian Justin Long (known for his personification of a Macintosh computer in Apple's Get a Mac advertisements) is hilarious and the perfect foil for the macho, laconic-cool hero. The other pivotal role is Lucy McClane, John's estranged daughter who proves to be just as feisty and unpredictable as her father in a pinch. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays this role extremely well and hits every heightened, intense emotional note. Finally, there is an amusing cameo by cult director and Silent Bob actor Kevin Smith.

All in all, Live Free or Die Hard is perfect summer entertainment - unpretentious, suspenseful, stylish, and fast-paced - and one of the best action films in a long time. Highly recommended. A

Very entertaining film with a few jaw-dropping action sequences and a good performance by Willis. A very pleasant surprise.

I loved this movie. I had a blast. It's EASILY the best Die Hard movie since the first one. Pretty much everything works in this.

John McClane is an awesome character in this, constantly hilarious and absolutely badass. This is an iconic role. I loved him, and I loved Bruce's performance. And he even has depth in this movie, a sense of tragedy, and the character is an interesting, logical continuation of the original character. McClane hasn't been this good since the original movie.

McClane's young protege plays off better against him than Samuel Jacksons ever did. There is just more meat to this relationship, it keeps on evolving. Long is excellent in this role. And the daughter character is both poignant and hilarious, having a multi-layered relationship with her dad.

The main villain was interesting, I thought. He is no Hans Gruber, but who is. I thought the villains in the 2nd film were threatening, but not memorable. Irons was great in the third film as long as we only heard his voice, but he became generic and boring after that. Olyphant is not physically intimidating, but plays a good smart geek, who aspires to be tougher than he actually is. Not an iconic villain, but I liked his complexity. He goes through a lot of different emotions in this. And his stature is helped by two excellent henchmen, Maggie Q and the Spiderboy.

The villain's plan, and the whole basic premise, was fresh and unique. It created a lot of interesting scenarios and set pieces. And the film kept me guessing, I didn't know where it was going. That's always a good thing.

The only character in the whole film who felt off to me was Kevin Smith's geek guy. Nothing wrong with the character in itself, Smith just wasn't very good playing it.

And the action: Fucking awesome. There were only two fleeting moment where the cutting to PG-13 had done minor damage (the deaths of two bad guys), but the issue was small. The film feels hard, violent and relentless.

Other than that, this was genuinely great action: Shot, edited and coreographed with great skill. It was always easy to see what was going on, and the adrenaline level and even genuine suspense were high. Not only that, but the writing in the action scenes was smart and inventive: There were always unique story beats, small and large, which I have not seen in other action movies.

Wiseman gets a huge thumbs up for this. All in all I felt his directing was excellent and it's great to see a new face around who actually knows how to film action, instead of just throwing a lot of blurry, shake close-ups at the audience.

As for the swearing, that was always a non-issue to me. So they used other curse words instead of "fuck"? Big fucking deal. I noticed some rubbery lips in a couple of scenes, but hardly a major gripe.

And finally: This film is funny as fuck, in the best possible sense. It has a wonderfully black, macabre sense of humor running through it. The humor never sacrifices the integrity of the characters or the story (Like Transformers did, for example). Instead it always hits exactly the right note. I laughed a lot in this film, and even when I didn't I had a stupid grin on my face. And often I was BOTH grinning and feeling the tension of the action in my guts.

This is great popcorn entertainment. This is for me one of the best action movies of this decade.

8/10.

my fav movie of the summer but thats not saying much as it was easily my most anticipated.

that said, i was kind of dissappointment. the whole robbing social security was pulled off nearly as well/didnt seem nearly as clever as the robbing the gold from dh3.

i liked it a lot, but there were just so many unrealistic moments i just....ugh. i know its a die hards...but how was maggie q "fine" in the fucking elevator shaft? Ill give it 8/10, and it is the worst of them series, though it still kicks ass. It was just a tad too ridiculous for my tastes.

I think he means after she got hit by a car at 100 mph and then got rammed between the car and a brick wall and managed to survive.
