Plot wise, the movie was pretty bad. Making the three old men the villains, on the conclusion of their storyline, was just ridiculous. There were so many holes in the movie, too, that can be hard to get past. His last night in the museum, when all the exhibits run amok, everything is completely destroyed. It's sunrise when the exhibits finally return to their showcases, and Stiller has yet to begin to clean the museum. Somehow, however, when they show the museum goers pouring in in the morning, the museum is in perfect shape. Plus, the museum director never even NOTICES that the third caveman is missing.
Despite all that, however, the movie was really amusing. I saw it with my friend and we were cracking up at various parts. Anything with Owen Wilson was especially funny. It's a pointless movie and makes little to no sense, but it makes you laugh, and for that, I really did enjoy it.

Wow, what a total surprise.
Absolutely, one of the worst movies I have ever seen! The last five minutes really clinched it for me. The dancing... the mingling... the horror. I just can't believe how bad this movie is.
To be honest, this deserves an F. I think it's actually worse than Date Movie, which was the worst movie of the year for me up until today, but some of the special effects are good. Not amazing, but good.

A Night at the Museum
Robin Williams reprises his role as a sensitive homosexual in this unexpected and baffling sequel to The Night Listener.
No, just kidding. Not bad, fairly funny in parts, fairly predictable and sugary in others. The plot wasn't a strong point. The exhibits weren't the only ones to get "new life," eh? They didn't get "new life", they came to life. You can't phrase it in a weird way to suit the plot. Still, I loved the remote-controlled car explosion and the scene where they let the tires down. Owen Wilson and even Ricky Gervais were quite funny.
Disposable, but at least I wasn't bored. A reasonable way to waste an afternoon.

Mildly entertaining, but Ben Stiller and Carla Gugino are wasted. Steve Coogan and Owen Wilson stood out and had great chemistry. I enjoyed Mickey Rooney's appearance as well. However, there are several VERY silly scenes in the movie (especially the final ones with all the singing and dancing in the museum). The visual effects are mostly very good, though (however, there are some dodgy ones as well). Like MovieDude, I wish Stephen Sommers had directed this and not the hack Shawn Levy who'll next mess up The Flash.

Surprisingly not painful, considering that I've hated Shawn Levy's past movies. Not a great movie by any means, definately more for kids than adults(despite a chuckle here and there) but it's fun, if forgettable, entertainment. The real problem is that Levy is a really lousy director. He lets lame conceived bits go on and on(in the horrendous Pink Panther, he let that brutally unfunny "Hamburger" bit go on for what felt like 12 years; here, a slapping contest between Ben Stiller and a monkey goes on longer than it really should), and he's not the first choice for this material. Imagine what Tim Burton or Robert Zemeckis would have done with this movie, and you can feel something lacking. On the acting front, the film is decent. Ben Stiller does a fine job with what he's given, even if he has to endure more comic slapstick abuse along the way. Carla Gugino gets a throwaway part as a potential love interest for Stiller. Ricky Gervais, of the hilarious show Extras, is good. Robin Williams and Owen Wilson score some laughs, even though they basically have extended cameos. Then there are Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, and Bill Cobbs for older audiences, even though kids won't know who they are. Night At The Museum isn't really funny, and I can't say I can find out why it raked in so much money, but's fine little entertainment, hopefully a change of pace from the usually excruciating Levy. A fun film with an old fashion 1960s family fun feel.

A Night at the Museum is one of those movies that seems to have all the right ingredients... a stellar cast, an intriguing concept, and good production values (effects, sound). Unfortunately the final product didn't come out as good as it should have.
I thought it was watchable, and I didn't dislike the movie, but it's just one of those that if I think about too much afterwards I can shoot far too many holes into it.
I think the thing that bugs me the most is that it could have been a very good movie with some smoothing out of the several plot holes or loose ends. I think it got all the big stuff right (basic story idea, casting, etc...), but just didn't hammer home the fine details. My biggest beef with it was the ending... the resolution of the bad guys and the quick solution to every problem - it's like they ran out of time and had to end the movie NOW!
But, again... I enjoyed the first 90% of the movie while I was watching it, and I liked the cast a lot and general premise... it was almost exactly the movie I was expecting it to be... I'll give it a B-.

 Re: Night at the Museum
My son liked it. He'd never seen anything like that before. I liked it as well insofar as it's innocent family fun, but it is sloppily written. It doesn't hold a candle to, say, Home Alone or The Mask. All the filmmakers did was piece together a formulaic plot and character set to act as a backdrop to their goldmine of an idea to have museum exhibits come alive at night. That's all this movie is, and financially it seems to have worked. The screen lights up when Paul Rudd, Carla Gugino, and Ricky Gervais are on it, then dims down again when Stiller and the old timers take over - not that I dislike Stiller, but this was back when he was still Mr. One-Note Comedy Actor.
One thing that irked me was the transitions between night shift and day shift/being open to the public. They were seamless. And Stiller never slept during the day, lol. I guess I was nitpicking things, having worked nights in a few jobs before, that weren't consistent with that lifestyle. But all-in-all it's a fun enough movie mostly because of the supporting cast.
