That big number at the end just ruined it for me.
The first time I saw the movie, I also thought the length of the Broadway Melody number was a bit jarring. Most of the MGM musicals of the period (well, those involving Kelly and/or Vincente Minnelli) would climax with one of these tangental ballets with little or no bearing on the plot.
But rewatch the film, trixster...if you're like me, you'l start wishing you could live in that sequence. I wouldn't touch a frame.

C+, a few great "classic" moments do not make the rest of the film any less annoying or dull.

 Re: Singin' in the Rain
Enjoyable, but not an all-out classic. Jean Hagen was superb. My favorite scenes were the end scene, the singin' in the rain one, and the one where they can't get her microphone to work properly.

I have finally seen it some weeks ago and fell in love with it just as many on here have already. While I didn't think it was a complete masterpiece, I really enjoyed it, moreso than any other musical I have ever seen. The production vaules are superb, the song numbers are mostly great and the choreography is unbelievable. The story does need need to hide behind the great style, though, it can hold its own.
While Jean Hagen was great, I didn't think she deserved her nom more than, say, Gene Kelly or Donald O'Connor. The latter was actually my favorite of the whole film and his dancing was simply excellent. My main gripe with the film, like some said before me, would be the really overlong final stage number.

 Re: Singin' in the Rain
A-/B+
I pretty much agree with the last couple reviews.
Glorious fun, perfect acting and singing (Good Morning and Make Em' Laugh being my favorite), AMAZING dancing, but yet there's something holding it just back from putting it in my echelon. While the actors were great, neither the storyline or the characters were that memorable, typical stuff for a musical... The movie's worth is far more in the dancing and music.
By the way I also back up Libs' comment that the failed movie and the filming of it is the highlight funny-wise of the film, and trix and Lecter's thoughts that Broadway Musical was way too effing long, and out of nowhere.

 Re: Singin' in the Rain
Even now that time has passed since my viewing, I still find myself singing Make Them Laugh, Good Morning and Singin' in the Rain in my head from time to time. Definitely the catchiest songs in any musical I have ever seen.

 Re: Singin' in the Rain
My favorite Gene Kelly film. It was breezy and Donald O'Connor was an amazing dancer. I loved the song Moses supposes his toeses are Roses.

Watched it for the first time and loved it start-to-finish. Just a fun, upbeat movie.
