One of the year's big disappointments to me. The concept with the movie being a The Graduate spin-off in a way, was great, but the execution lacked big time. Most of the time movie just moved in now direction and was stalling without any purpose or aim. Jennifer Aniston surprisingly managed to come across as pretty unblikeable in the movie and Kevin Costner wasn't given much to work with anyway. The sole shining star if the movie was Shriley MacLaine who pretty much single-handedly saves it from being a disaster. I admit, I did laugh some times during the first half of the movie, but after that it went decidingly downhill. Okay-ish fluff.

It's actually borderline C+/B-, MacLaine gave it the edge for a B-, but it's the worst movie in the B- area I saw 2005.

Watch Downfall (yeah, I will nag ya about it :P )

sad to say that I was so right from this movie from the early trailers > just a fluff piece that barely had anything interesting, good or funny.

a much better idea for anyone wanting to watch this

- for Jennifer Ansiton > go out and pick another of her past movies or the best of Friends.

- Shirley Maclaine loses the battle of the returning movies star with Jane Fonda and Barbara Sreissand - can't believe some are talking about her being the highlight of this movie > advice - go out and rent some of her other movies as she has been in some great movies.

not much else to say as Mark Ruffalo was the 3rd male in the triangle >>>>>>>>>>> maybe a budget decision?????

........................

maybe a C or a C- and maybe a good movie to see when you are home sick cause at least if you are sick, you won't be able to feel worse when watching this movie.

Shirley MacLaine in this one was far far superior to Fonda in Monster in Law and add to that that MacLaine also had a great appearance in In Her Shoes.

I will let Mav take the Jane Fonda, MIL, Shirley Maclaine, Rumor comparision.

***************

I, personally, just didn't think SM was special in that role - pretty cheap / standard laughs. Like how many times were they going to play up the grandmother word > Don't call me grandmother.

and as for In Her Shoes which I thought was great, SM's part wasn't played for laughs - it was much more a standard supporting working role that played second banana to the others. Also more of a dramatic role.

But the other three that I mentioned, they were going for the comedy gold.

Well, do you think Fonda was great in Monster in Law and wasn't going for cheap laughs?

I really didn't think they were cheap laughs with Fonda in MIL. They gaged to her character.

and on SM, I just didn't think she was that funny or anything special in Rumor.

Okay, if you think so, that's your opinion. I just disagree.

After some deliberation, I decided to bump the grade down to a C+ for this one. I still think it is amusing fluff, but it is really forgettable.

A really average film. Shirley McLaine is quite enjoyable, and I'm always happy when I see Richard Jenkins (my god, there were THREE "Six Feet Under" stars or guest stars, with Jenkins, Kathy Bates, and Mena Suvari). Jennifer Aniston is her usual self (which is a good thing), but this was a step back to "Friends" for her, as opposed to the step forward that I felt "Derailed" was for her. I can't imagine "The Break Up" this summer will be a step forward, sadly.

Anyway, the film isn't great... it's not even good, really. Just the three actors were solid enough to carry me through the film. And, I realize in this film how much I dislike Mark Ruffalo. He just doesn't do a thing for me.

Grade: C

B-/C+

Well, not terrible. I think it suffers from a bit of the Ocean's Twelve syndrome, in that it felt like all the A-listers involved were in it more for a vacation then to actually work. It was definitley pure fluff, but it was enjoyable and funny at moments. Aniston goes back to playing Rachel, but I didn't mind her. Ruffalo on the other hand was terrible, which is irking considering how great he was in JLH. Maclaine, Costner, and Suvari were decent, but as said before with Aniston and Ruffalo it just seemed like they weren't trying very much at all.

Could've been a lot worse though.

RUMOR HAS IT (2005)

"Rumor Has It" has a plot that suggests it could be something great, but due to less-than-solid reviews I rightly lowered my expectations. And it was a good thing I wasn't expecting much other than an entertaining little time-waster because that was exactly the kind of movie I got. It's easy to watch and has some funny moments, but will be easily forgettable shortly after you watch it. Jennifer Aniston is entertaining as usual and Shirley MacLaine steals the show with her character and her hilarious one-liners. I absolutely loved Steve Sandvoss in his debut film "Latter Days" and was really looking forward to seeing him here, and while it is nice just to see him on the screen for a while he's pretty much wasted in his role. All his character has to do is stand (or sit) around in the background and occasionally say a couple of words. It wasn't a bad move of him to take a role (however small) in this bigger, more-mainstream production, but I really hope he is given better roles in the future.

Overall this is nothing great, but it's perfectly entertaining and not a bad way to spend an hour and a half. I enjoyed it.

Grade: 7/10 (B-)

Meh I didn't enjoyed this movie at all. With the premise it had I thought it would be an above average rom-com, but it wasn't. To my big surprise I didn't liked Anistons character at all. D

Rob Reiner has lost most of what made him a good director, with a handful of bad movies since the American President.

This one wasn't bad, but considering the talent involved, its pretty average.

5/10 -> C-

Interesting premise but a horrible execution. The cast is good, but that doesn't benefit the movie much as most scenes are lukewarm. They feel like good and funny and charming scenes, but they're just not (if that makes any sense).

Just rewatched. Costner is always watchable, and MacLaine is pretty great. Ruffalo is also very likeable and watchable, even if he's not doing anything per se, just being Ruffalo. The film gradually loses a certain spark or curiosity as we learn he's not her father (even if it's ambiguous for a while), but overall it does its job. There's also something very satisfying about watching wealthy families organize weddings in their 9-bedroom houses. I'd argue this provides more true escapism than a Transformers film.
