I just watched it for the first time. What a wonderful movie! I loved everything about it. Everything.

By far the best Potter movie. The other 3 feel like an incoherent jumble of different scenes and sequences...more like commercial TV than film.

Best book of the series (unless the next one is better), the movie could have been better, but it was very good.
Best of the series for sure.
Next one does look good, and I didn't like the book (too much umbridge)

The best of the series, Cuaron's direction is superb and the look of the film is amazing. Definetely the most stylish and well-directed Potter film.

I still don't get the overwhelming love for this one, but yeah, it definitrely put the series on the right track and Newell improved upon that yet again.

Re: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
What a major step-up in terms of visuals and overall atmosphere. What the movie lacks in story it makes up for in evolving from, essentially, two kids films, to a mature, wider-reaching Harry Potter.

Re: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
I hadn't seen any of the HP films from Azkaban on. I wanted to finish the books first and the first two movies didn't sell me back when they came out, so I was slightly disappointed in the idea of further film adaptations. So happy I finally started watching them in time for Deathly Hallows Part Two. The first two work almost as a prologue to the real films. Five hours worth mind you, but still.

Too bad. I was hoping Half-Blood Prince would be even better.

Harry Potter 6 and 7.1 were less enjoyable and poorly constructed. I prefer the first two.

Re: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
As pure book to movie adaptations, the first two movies are the best. More awe, wonder, fantasy, and adventure (Also, I thought Dobby was a great character that didn't get enough attention because of the wonder that is Gollum). Starting with Prisoner, you get the sense that stuff is alternately being crammed in or cut out (Shrieking Shack scene is way too fast paced in the movie). However, Prisoner does several things right. I loved the rustic approach to the look of the Hogwarts landscape. The dementors are effectively creepy, and there is a marked improvement in the kids acting.
I still think the best scene of the series is the graveyard scene at the end of Goblet of Fire. The maze not so much (where the hell are the mythical creatures?!). But the graveyard is worth it.
One thing that irked me about the end of Deathly Hallows I is that I would have cared a lot more about Dobby if they had included him in movies 3-6. He's in all the books.

Re: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
If they could've had the budget, each book may have worked better adapted as a miniseries. But, that's just not possible, financially or otherwise. Maybe in twenty years.
I look at the films as separate from the books anyway.

I've always imagined that if they ever sort remade HP it would be in TV, preferably premium TV. Have 7 "mini-seasons" of like four hour-long episodes. Perhaps give HP5 and HP7 one more extra episode so end up with 30 hours total for the whole series. Mmm yes, I've had this dream too. Would be epic. I bet they eventually do something like this in 20 years.

I think it takes its time a lot better and you really get the feeling that you live in Hogwarts with the three main characters. It also the funniest one, really nailing down some of the humor from the books.

I like Goblet, but it's just not as exciting as it might have been. The Yule Ball stuff was really the only section of the film that was up there with Azkaban.

I think the graveyard scene is quite disappointing, but that has more to do with how good it is in the book than anything else. It's sadly a fanboy qualm. I can usually shake them.

Best part of number four is when Jarvis Cocker, Jonny Greenwood, and Phil Selway cameo.
Prisoner of Azkaban is still my favorite of the HP films.

Re: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
I agree with the sentiment that the franchise really got great in the middle, but I would still argue that #1 and #2 are better movies than the last two films. I didn't have to have the read the books to get those movies, but the last two movies were cryptic, confusing, and boring. It's not that they were trying to emulate David Lynch or something. They just didn't have any real narrative arc like Sirius Black + Dementors, the the tournament in Gof, or even the origin story of Philosopher's Stone. Voldemort as a villian is just pretty lame, as he's had seven movies to be a bad guy and really doesn't have much to show for it. PoA nay be the best Harry Potter movie because while its set in this fascinating world, it doesn't overconcern itself with that lame villian. And Goblet of Fire may also be the best because it's the only one where he comes off as a really intimidating, scary villian... Well that and Philosopher's Stone.

Re: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
After seeing all six films, I'd agree that to really get the most from the stories, especially OotP and HBP, it definitely helps to have read the books first, if it isn't a requirement.

Re: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Half-Blood Prince is confusing? I do think Order of the Phoenix relies a bit too much on book readers, but HBP is fairly simple. And Deathly Hallows is only confusing if you don't know the films. The only thing in that flick that seems to rely on the book is Godric's Hollow, and that's because they cut Harry leaving his aunt and uncle, which would've explained it for film audiences.

I don't think any of the films are confusing, but I still think it helps to read the books beforehand. They're fun reads.
