I can only imagine the look of horror on the faces of the cast and crew of Fantastic Four when they watched The Incredibles last fall. Pixar's film was a warm and friendly homage to the famed family of superheroes. It's not inconceivable to think that had the producers of Fantastic Four seen a rough cut of The Incredibles early enough, maybe they would have called the whole thing off. Fantastic Four isn't a horrible film, it definitely has its moments. But when your neighborhood is inhabited by the likes of Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins, and The Incredibles, no matter how fast and loud your sports car is, it's still just a Honda parked next to a Ferrari.

The success of comic book films often lies with the director. It's takes a certain type of talent to be to transfer the written exploits of superheroes onto film. It's not an easy task and the cinematic graveyard is littered with the headstones of directors unable or unwilling to meet the challenge. And with Fantastic Four, Tim Story the director of Barbershop is woefully out of his league. Parts of the film play like hyper stylized commercials. Others, like bad sitcoms. I expected at any moment for Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch (Chris Evans) to turn towards the camera and sell me Gatorade. Speaking of The Human Torch, the other players in this foursome aren't entirely without charm. The Thing (Michael Chiklis), The Invisible Girl (Jessica Alba), and Mr. Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd) are all okay and likable. If there's anything that works in the film, it's the interaction between The Thing and The Human Torch. Too bad their relationship is shortchanged in order to give more time to the wholly unbelievable romance between The Invisible Girl and Mr. Fantastic.

Fantastic Four plays really loose and carefree with continuity. You never really buy into the universe because the rules change from scene to scene. One minute The Thing is too heavy to ride an elevator. The next, he isn't. The Human Torch is able to reach supernova temperatures. That's right, the temperature of the sun. What a fantastic ending to a potential film franchise that would be. Our hero, in an attempt to foil the evil Dr. Doom (Julian McMahon) goes supernova and destroys the planet. Now that's creative filmmaking. But no, somehow his energy is contained. And all is well. Except for the collateral damage that is. And the impending military response.

Truth is, there are too many good films in theaters right now to recommend Fantastic Four. Sure, there are some laughs to be found, almost exclusively thanks to Chris Evans. And it does revel in its own goofiness. But when a summer superhero film can't deliver an interesting story or at the very least, exciting special effects, what's the point?

D+

OK Roger Ebert.. Just like I said, READING TOO MUCH INTO THE MOVIE and trying to overanalyze why Johnny Storm could reach Supernova temperatures.. Pick up the comic Loyal and read next time and you'll understand it much better than you apparently didn't..

MEOW.

Dissapointing to say the least. Entertaining in some respects but the story was underdeveloped and at many times just silly. The effects were decent but nothing special. Overall entertaining but nowhere near as it could have been. C+

Seems like old times - this is from Bewitched so just inset Fantastic 4 whenever you see Bewitched and increase Mav liking of the movie from a b to a A.

***********************************************

so we have the fighting words of

:Jump: Maverikk jumping on the Bewitched bandwagon :Jump:

vs.

:bur: Loyal not feeling the movie to be kind :bur:

:box: so :box:

Mav starts off with Bewitched was a fun movie. Nothing serious, but enjoyable. and ends with a grade of B.

and

Loyal counters with Well, it looks like the shitty remake trend continues. It's not that the movie is the worse thing ever, it just isn't very good. It's boring. And unfunny. and ends with a grade of D.

*********************************************

:sw: So who slashed who :sw:

:mod: And the winner by a knockout is :mod:

Well, I did like Fantastic Four more than Bewitched Goldie, hence the +.

That Chris Evans, he's going places (hopefully not to a FF sequel).

BKB I'm really glad you enjoyed the movie. I went in hoping to escape for just a couple of hours on a rainy summer day. I just kept scratching my head throughout the entire movie though.

And there's nothing wrong with analyzing a movie by any means. It was too cheesy for me to enjoy at all.

But sometimes when a moviegoer overanalyzes a movie, it takes the enjoyment out of it and it shouldn't be that way.. Gee?? Roger Ebert says BATMAN was 1 of the best films of the year.. I wonder how many times he sat through it if it were this good?? :-k

Trust me I was trying to have fun at the movie. Guess it just never struck a chord with me.

Sorry, no witty catch-phrase. The film wasn't terrible, but I was never engaged. A few scenes were fun, but others were just incredibly terrible. Evans and Chiklis do well, though McMahon and Alba would be laughed off the stage during a junior high play -- and Iaon Gruffudd had absolutely no screen presence, making him the least-interesting "leader" in the comic film revival era. But did I mention the Human Torch and Thing were funny?

Big Fat A

This movie was the most fun I've had at a movie all year. And the crowd I was with loved it too. They laughed and cheered throughout. I'm sure the word of mouth for this movie is going to be fine.

Loved Chris Evans as the Human Torch. And I'm sure he'll be the stand out for most people. And nice eye candy ;)

Loved as Mr. Fantastic. He did the genius/geek thing very well. And also much better eye candy then I thought he was going to be. ;)

Michael Chiklis made a great Thing. But I do wish they'd put more development into his relationship with Alicia. They just seemed to be together at the end, after only meeting once. I have no problem with casting a black woman to play Alicia.

Jessica Alba was OK as Susan Storm, but I do agree that she was not the ideal person to cast for the part. Certainly she's comicbook chick gorgeous, but didn't really come off as a scientist. Not to second guess, but Scarlett Johansson would have been a kick ass Invisible Woman. But I think that her chemistry with Mr. Fantastic was just fine.

I expected more of Julian MacMahon. I've enjoyed his work on Charmed and Nip/Tuck. I think his part was underwritten, which I suppose made it harder to act because I know JM does villiany much better then was represented here.

All in all the experience lived up to what I hoped. If that's because my expectations were lower, and I wasn't looking for Masterpiece Theater in tights. Well, good for me. ;)

I've seen more 360 turnarounds for this movie than alot of movies I've seen in the past that were bashed prior to the movie coming out.. I think the critics and the general audience clearly are divided on this one with the critics losing out.. That's what happens I suppose when you overanalyze a movie like this and expect everything to be so ultra damn serious in tone like BATMAN was and it's true considering 75% of the reviews you see compare the 2.. That's why I posted that thread on the Cinemania Board about this movie getting better reviews if BATMAN never came out this summer.. It's so good that a majority od this site and others will only catch it 1 time and wait for the DVD.. Yeah, that's a great movie for ya all right.. I'd see F4 again anytime over BATMAN which I only saw once cause it wasn't worth seeing again.. At least F4 was FUN..

How can they let this stuff be put on any screen. Seriously I was very close to asking for my money back. The effects looked like they were from the late 80s, the space scene was absolutley atrocious. I felt nothing for the characters the entire movie. I didn't care about whether or not they were able to get back to their normal selves. The movie is definitley one of the cheesiest I've ever seen. Yeah sure, any guy can go to the X-Games and start to ride a bike. [-( So many bad one-liners they were hard to count. Doom is just as boring as the rest of the movie. There is nothing redeming about this movie. Save your $10 and go see Batman Begins again. This script should've never seen the light of day.

D+

P.S. There actually is one thing good about this movie. Jessica Alba in her bra and panties.

On the contrary, The FF4 kicked MUCH ASS and I enjoyed every minute of this movie and the crowd I was with which was SOLD OUT enjoyed it very much and laughed at all the right spots.. As I exited the theatre, I thought to myself WHY a movie critic such as Roger Ebert would read so damn much into the movie and dissect it in the most overanalyzing, anal rentative way possible and not just him, but the rest of the critics as well???? I thought Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm stole the movie and their relationship and bickering played out JUST like the comic did.. The FX I would say were on Par with the 1st X-MEN movie in the sense where, like I said, FOX is treading lightly with this 1st movie to see how well it does before pumping more $$$ into the FX for a sequel like they did with X2.. The only thing I will say and I have said since day 1 and many can agree or disagree with me on this all you like is The THING SHOULD be Much larger next time around and CGI and by doing this, your progressing how he loks from the early days of the Jack Kirby look to ultimately looking like he does in the Ultimate FF4 which is more defined and much bigger.. Remember that The THING weighs according to MARVEL Encyclopedia around 500 LBS and at times, it was hard for me to guage this weight.. This was a character that went toe to toe with The HULK even thouhg he had his ass handed to him 90% of the time cause The HULK is just far too powerful and there aren't many characters in the world of MARVEL that can downright take on The HULK..

Overall, I give this the same grade as BATMAN.. A 9.5 out of 10 with more added fun and a sense of enjoyment than the Doom and Gloom process in which BATMAN was and that was graded basing it on the last 2 movies cause it still doesn't hold a cnadle to Burton's 1st movie..

"A"

BKB,

You can't criticize everyone for not feeling the same way you do about a film. Some think it's shit, so be it.

Well, I kind of agree with the criticisms of this movie. The plot is non-existent, some of the performances are pretty bad, and the special effects are kind of cheesy...BUT...similar to what others have said--the audience seemed to be eating it up. They laughed and cheered loudly- and frankly-it was one of the best audience reactions I've witnessed in several years. So--it made me start to reevaluate my feelings about the movie. Maybe I really WAS being too pretentious? Let's face it. When it comes to super hero adaptations, down deep, we LOVE cheesiness. We love the fact that Lou Ferringo runs around painted green as The Hulk. We love the fact that when Batman punched somebody a big, colorful "POW!" would pop up on the TV screen. It's what makes them endearing, memorable, and fun. Fantastic Four has those qualities in spades.

So.......I give it an A

How can you give a film a near perfect rating when you think it's boring?

300 million would be huge for BATMAN, I never expected it to make $150 million, hell I never expected to like it. I thought it rocked, I saw it twice and I know other people that has seen it more than once as well. It's not exactly "dropping like a rock." I think it's doing pretty good for itself. I agree with you on WAR OF THE WORLDS but really disagree with you on BATMAN.
