 Re: The Dark Knight Rises
yosh: i felt essentially the same way (so joyless -- and still don't understand batman/bruce at all). so did anthony lane (finally they give him a big movie to review). and as for the tarantino v. nolan comparisons, tarantino has infinitely more depth. christopher nolan directs each scene as a vehicle for the next. nothing more.
there are a lot of things to admire about nolan as a 'tentpole' director: 2d over 3d, 'traditional' action over CGI, gets good performances out of his leads
recently, he's become too deliberate and too focused on surprise. and, yeah, his films are so drawn out. i mean, there was a lot more shit happening in batman begins than TDKR.
but i'll put those grievances aside if he can find a sense of humor

 Re: The Dark Knight Rises
It appears that a lot of people are pleased with Anne Hathaway. That's another casting choice that many people criticized before seeing the movie. Yet it has worked out. Again.

Oh, god the way he awkwardly contorts his movie to set up the twist...a twist that every member of audience knows is on its way

 Re: The Dark Knight Rises
Lol Bane's world is not a real world...
Its a few days of fun but in the end society stops working...
lol Great film
It was a epic but I felt the film did not need to be so long.
Bane was great but I could not take him seriously in some parts...
Batman really improved his performance in the film.
Action was epic but we have seen better, it appears everyone wants to destroy a city these days lol...
Alfred was great, Morgan and the French lady were meh... Gary Oldman was way down from TDK as well. Catwoman was a huge surprise, enjoyed her a lot.
Felt the film was not as tight as TDK and I think it just shows how unique that film is. The filmis really great story telling, but I think some scenes were pointless.
No great quotes or line stay with me from the film. I would put it around a 8.5 around TA and below TDK at around 9-9.5 out of ten.
I want to watch this a 2nd time but unlike TDK, I will wait till it comes on DVD.

 Re: The Dark Knight Rises
Saw it the first time in LieMAX. Saw it today in IMAX. So. Much. Different. It's insane. It got even more epic. Also, the idiots that clogged up page 11 are idiots.

 Re: The Dark Knight Rises
I found the film too depressing...
That was my sisters complaint for TDK..
Found that for TDK.
Ending made up for it though

 Re: The Dark Knight Rises
I thought it was great. A little on the bloated side and not as amazing as The Dark Knight, but both this and The Dark Knight blow "Batman Begins" out of the water. Bane is nowhere near as exciting a villain as Ledger's Joker was, and that's no surprise. That's a tough act to follow. He's still passable though and Tom Hardy was good. Anne Hathaway is really great as Catwoman. Sexy and sassy and a lot of fun to watch. I kind of wish she was around more in the film. There are fairly long stretches without her and, in my opinion, she was missed. Out of the new additions to the cast she easily made the biggest impression.
Overall I still highly recommend it. It's not perfect but it's still superb and a fairly epic end to Nolan's Batman trilogy. I kind of wish it weren't the last.
Either an 8/10 (A-) or 9/10 (A-), not sure.

 Re: The Dark Knight Rises
I saw it in real IMAX and found two things I didn't quite expected
- IMAX was so pretty it made the 35mm material look like crap - The flips between IMAX and 35mm were jarring. It was okay for TDK and MI4 because there was only 25-30 minutes of IMAX for each and they were only used for key scenes. TDKR uses IMAX for every pickup shot and it becomes distracting.

I'm surprised so many people think the scene of him alive in the end is real. It doesn't seem likely to me.

The former scene in particular, though. If Bruce is dead at the end, it's the most arbitrary sequence in the history of cinema. "Ha! Bruce fixed the autopilot ages ago and didn't tell you! He still died in the explosion and crash, though... He didn't use the autopilot. He fixed it, though! In your face, Alex Cross!" People who believe he's dead are reaching. It would honestly be less contrived if it were just Alfred's fantasy, but the indications Bruce is alive are too strong. They're concrete.

 Re: The Dark Knight Rises
I thought it was pretty disappointing. Am I the only one who thought it was in "standard blockbuster" autopilot mode for maybe 80% of the run-time. The entire 3rd act after Bruce gets out of the prison was pretty much an Avengers/Iron Man/Transformers/etc. 3rd act, with Batman. Also Talia is a flop as a villain. She pretty much is pointless until the reveal and then goes into evil moustache twirl/I will even gloat will I die, mode.
It was fun and all with a cool villain, but it's not exactly an epic emotional/character conclusion to me

The sound went really low during the part where Fox said that and I heard him saying something about the auto-pilot but didn't know what he said. I was under the impression the auto-pilot didn't work so I thought no way was he alive. The local theater sucks. Their sound system is terrible. The sound went in and out during the whole movie.
