I agree. And I also agree that Routh was the high point of the film. He was fantastic. I also hope that the next sotry is better. We need a better challenge for Supes as well.

The thing I loved about the first Superman were the long, pastoral Kanasas settings, the funeral of Clark's "father", the whole general flow of the movie, Reeves screaming when he finds Lois dead, etc. There are a lot of little moments in those films which overcome the special effects.

i just thinks its funny the parts i expected to hate-the stuff with kids, the long slow things with lois-turned out to be some of the films strongest stuff. thart kid is so funy. from his voice n weezing sound to his little looks at supes n clark to walking around with a trashcan on his head going "rawr!" to say "BUUURRRRRWWWWIIITTTOOSSSS!"...I thought th was my funny n my girlfriend thought he was a dorable. this is one time where adding a kid def. worked.

Film: I really enjoyed this film alot and I don't know if it was because of lowered expectations of which mine weren't even that high to begin with. I liked the pace of the film and didn't find it overly long or even slow. In fact, I was pretty glued to the film from start to finish. The story with Luther was okay as he wasn't that big of a villain in this film but he did make you wanna hate him that's for sure. I liked Bosworth as Lois and enjoyed the interaction between she and Routh. I found Routh to be a great find and pleasant surprise. He really reminds/looks like C. Reeve. I didn't find the dialogue weak either. I had heard some conservatives complaining that Superman was losing his meaning/purpose as to what he stood for when for example, the editor asks if Sman still stands for truth justice and all the other stuff. I think it would have been nice if he said the American way but considering the Daily Planet is like the NY Times one can see why that entertainment news liberal editor would say it like that. I liked the varying displays of Sman's powers in the film. Him detatching that hugh block of earth was slightly over the top but I can let that slide since it's the first film. I also found it funny when the news was mentioning a whole list of cities and one blurb said Gotham. I thought that was cute. Overall, I completely enjoyed the film and am looking very much forward to the next one.

ok, so what was the point of making this movie? it was blah. can't give it an F because it wasn't horrible but that doesn't say much.

my review will be a report on the crowd reaction at the AMC 25 in Times Square (1 am showing):

-tons of laughing AT the movie
-a "yeah! for child support" comment yelled out when lois asks superman if he will be around at then of the movie
-chatter all through the last 30 minutes

I forgot to mention that on my second viewing, I noticed that Kal Penn (Harold and Kumar, Van Wilder) was one of Lex's henchmen. I'm not surprised I didn't notice him the first time round, as his part is absolutely miniscule! What a waste - even the henchman with the video camera got more laughs.

BTW, notice how after Superboy murdered the one British henchman, it left just the three brown dudes to get squished by the falling crystal at the end. Middle Eastern/Indian types are the hot new war-on-terror bad guys, but I miss the cold war Russian villains...

i still say batmanbegins is greatest super hero movie ever. but without a doubt when the superman returns director cut is released, this will over take it. such an absurd amount of stuff was edited out.

Make a movie thats already absurdly long even longer? Yeeeeah thats not gonna help.

Thoughts:

1. Surprisingly Parker Posey was really good. I loved the banter between her and Spacey. It's a throwback to Gene Hackman vs. Valerie Perrine.

2. Kate Bosworth is still a poor choice for Lois Lane. She didn't act too poorly but she turned Lois into too much of a bitch.

3. Brandon Routh wasn't too bad but he didn't really have that much material.

4. They should have taken the kid to Supercuts.

5. The score is an excellent adaptation.

6. The effects were alright... not really up to the standards of ILM or WETA.

7. I loved the credit sequence ideas (although the planet effects were silly).

8. The film is a complete rip off of the first Superman plot, where Lex starts earthquakes to make "beachfront property" because he wants more land. Complete with Lois being almost killed. Superman has to save the residents from earthquakes, etc.

9. Lots of plot and logic holes.

If they have the theatrical cut and the extended cut on the DVD (Like they will with the upcoming Superman: The Movie release) I don't think anyone is gonna care. It wouldn't surprise me if the extended cut, if there is one, runs about 180 minutes.

Better than I expected. Dragged on too long at the end, ROTK-style. You want to leave the theatre all excited, instead of "isn't it over yet?" Lois Lane is too young. Kevin Spacey is excellent.

If they were just going to release a DVD with the extended cut, they could have shown Superman falling to Earth after he throws the island into space, maybe fall and hit the ground, then cut to the "Superman Is Dead/Superman Lives" newspaper spread then immediately with Lois and the kid in the hospital room.

I might put up with the longer post-island scenes on DVD, but not in a theater. The ending wasn't tight.

If you are Lord of the Rings, and youv'e spent 11 hours developing characters and situations, then yeah, take your 30 minute ending and be as true to the themes of the end of the book if possible, if you are writing a story from scratch, don't create an additional plot point after your main villian bites the dust.

Or if you really want the whole "Superman is Dead!" section of the movie, have Lex stab him, pick up Superman in the water, take him all the way back to Metropolis, have the Lex threat grow, have him get better THEN go kick Lex's ass.

Does it bother anybody else that Lois never directly confronts Richard? Poor Richard. Lois is such a bitch.
