 Re: Gravity
The film that Gravity most reminds me of is Poseidon - - very similar technological survival movies with the same escalating danger/improbable escape structure. And while I certainly enjoyed Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, I have to give the edge to Wolfgang Petersen's Poseidon for it's use of humor as it's catalyst over Gravity's use of faux humanism.

 Re: Gravity
Shack wrote: Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity is a blockbuster even before looking at its box-office numbers. It’s big, expansive and exciting like the best summer movies are. Moreso, perhaps its best choice is to let in a mainstream Hollywood side. It’s not a docudrama in space. It’s not pretending to be a gritty, honest depiction of how getting cut off from communication in space would go. Gravity is cinema, art more than science. The goal is emotional resonance with the audience.
Cuaron’s precision is the most perfect of fits for the film. It appears to be made on a frame by frame basis. No time, movement, or line of dialog is wasted. Few films have felt so specifically made for a theatre viewing. The chaos of motion Ryan faces is captured when it’s inescapably in front of you.
Matt is one of the better George Clooney characters I’ve seen. The dire situation around him, adds a vulnerability usually lacking in his “I’m George F*cking Clooney” cool characters. Underneath his jokes is a melancholy, revealed without time spent on further development.
Sandra Bullock’s Ryan is developed as cleanly. One small scene with few words describing her past, tells all that’s needed to. Gravity’s story is more than anything, about surviving and the reasons to. That’s why Cuaron letting the film’s sentimentality breathe, instead of fearing it coming off as cliche, is an essential decision. Gravity is a film in space that feels human and warm. It gets there because of Ryan’s emotion and humanity.
This is surely one of the best films of the 2000s millennium. Cuaron’s precise filmmaking is a masterclass and as an action packed, emotional joyride, it’s a hit. Gravity is great cinema. wow

 Re: Gravity
this is better without the 3d I think. it's mostly all far too cropped to really work. and when it's not, it's just too dark. three d was best on earth by a mile, and that's only like three minutes worth.
Also it doesn't really work as well the second time around because it obviously relies so heavily on the suspense. some films can keep that with multiple views, but I feel like this isn't one of them.
it's obviously a well made, well acted, beautiful film. it's still top ten...so far anyway. but definitely lost quite a bit of what I liked the first time.

In fact, I found it even more suspenseful the second time, which is insane, as I knew how it'd pan out. It held up splendidly and I raised my grade after the second viewing.

Too much hype, and too necessary to see on the big screen in 3D. It's going to lose a lot of visual awe in home theater. As it is, I've had several customers express disappointment in it even from it's theater viewing. It's just WAY over-hyped.
That doesn't take away from it's excellent theater performance though. I was blown away by it in 2D. But that's me. I did see it in IMAX 3D too, in a full-size theater. The 3D wasn't as distracting as it usually is for me, but it still gives me that weird pop-up-book vibe where the depth of field looks exaggerated, and if objects in the distance are in relatively clear focus, they look like they're smaller and closer than they actually are. (Oh, and to my eye, digital IMAX looks like crap on a full-size screen built for 15/70 film. Because so much of the film is in space and is over black, I detected lots and lots of jaggies and aliasing...) And I'll stop before this turns into a rant about the decline of 15/70 IMAX print distribution. Agreed. As I mentioned in the review thread, the 3D did not work particularly well in Gravity because of the extreme changes in perspective. On the other hand, I enjoyed the IMAX presentation which does far more to convey the space setting by completely filling your field of vision. I believe many viewers mistakenly conflated the two effects and then attributed the benefit solely to 3D. You always believe much about other people. I expect the least of most.

The hype about Gravity's 3D is the most well deserved thing in the world.
I don't like this stupid group thinking comments. I don't think many here would praise the 3D if they didn't found it worth praising.

Bradley Witherberry always calls any opinion that disagrees with his (which happens about 99.9% of the time) "groupthink," without fail. His shtick is being the Armond White of KJ.

 Re: Gravity
Just got back from this. Saw it in 3D. 3D trailers 47 Ronin, Thor 2, and especially Hobbit kicked ass.
This was a good movie. I'm glad I decided to see it on the ultrascreen in 3D. This performance is far more worth of an Oscar win for Bullock than The Blind Side was. I don't think it should win best picture though. I thought all in all Captain Phillips was better, and there are more movies to come.
Wins - BA and most tech awards (though I'd rather Hobbit win) Noms but not wins - Picture/director

Gravity
It's a good film. Very good, even. I don't quite 'get' the groundbreaking response to the film, which I think made Gravity too hyped for me to really enjoy it. I found it unique, original, engaging, tense and exciting. It's clear to see that Gravity is a few steps above normal blockbusters like Thor, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Pirates of the Caribbean etc. (which are just trash compared to this). It's a well crafted film, with a greatly told story, and splendid performances by George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. The 3D didn't add much, but it at least wasn't a distraction like it is with most others.
Some scenes were really special. The re-entry into Earth was spectacular, Bullock rolling out into space was panicky and interesting, and Clooney coming back into the pod as part of Bullocks' dream was really cool and relieving. The whole movie had great cinematography, pace, visual effects, and score, so no qualms there. There was really nothing negative about the movie, apart from the hype created around it that put me in a sense of 'well it's not as great as the hype has led me to believe' - but that wasn't the film's fault. But I will try to detach myself from that and compare it against other movies, for which it easily comes out on top. I found a few things very convenient (like the Chinese eeni-meenie-miney-moe space station scene and the Russian one too), and a few other things very frightening (Pretty much all of it). I'd, of course, like to watch it again, and I will when it comes to China (I saw it in HK at the end of a two-day session with friends) because I feel I can really enjoy this again without any influence of tiredness etc.
At the moment I will go with...

Gravity
Watched it for a second time, but this time in IMAX 3D, and this time when I wasn't tired. It was much better and I really think this is a special film. Visually breathtaking (can't say that about many films) with a strong story of survival and about letting go. It really pays to see it in a cinema, and it pays even more to see it in IMAX.
Bullock gives a great performance and Clooney counters that with his cheeky, laidback, rugged charm which makes up a subtle and professional on-screen chemistry.

If there ever was a movie to see on the big screen in 3D, it's Gravity.
Sadly, it didn't held up very well on my TV at home. Quite boring on more than one occasion, actually.
I really should have watched it another time in theaters.
