Two people struggling to reconcile their different approaches to dating is relatable and engaging. Douchebags whining about fate and love-at-first sight makes me want to see The Final Destination. Or, better yet, go there myself. on the off chance that we ever actually meet I'm going to run up to you and give you 1 giant hug. Maybe that will help.

Considering your hatred for Garden State I knew you'd hate it as well from the getgo, heh.

I saw this again Friday night. Such a great movie. I do think ADAM and ADVENTURELAND are better, though this is a close third.

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
I saw it again last week and loved it even more than I originally did.
I decided to go with a 9/10 (A-) instead of an 8/10 (A-). Maybe eventually it will be an A though.
They need to get this on DVD A.S.A.P., like November.

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
What I like is that it's a movie about delusion. Tom is constantly deluded over Summer... both that she's perfect and that they share love and fated connection. As the final conversation at the soccer field shows, Tom simply remembers what he wants to, and while he's with her, only sees what he wants to. He convinces himself from the very beginning she's perfect and the one, which forever clouds his vision.
One senses perhaps Summer is equally wrong about her husband and rushes into a marriage on the same wave of early relationship elation Tom had, as well as the same inability to see in her husband anything but perfections. Truly the only difference between Tom and Summer's relationship and Summer and her unnamed husband's, is that in the latter the husband shares mutual feelings for her and asks her to marry him. Tom similarly marries Summer within a month if she presents the idea (recalling the quick decision in the Graduate, I'm sure), but course she never felt that way
It's no coincidence Tom makes greeting cards. This further shows the film's concern with delusion. Greeting cards, like films and their relationships, delude the public into believing in true love and other fabled emotions
Two important scenes in the film
- When Tom is breaking dishes at the beginning and his sister says it's Amanda Hellsmly all over again. This implies Tom has been through this before and has been deluded by the love idea before
- The B&W montage talking about "the Summer effect", which shows her look transfixing people into seeing her as perfect. As many young people learn, it's too easy to mix up looks with other qualities. An adolescant may believe the most beautiful girl in his class is amazing not because she's beautiful, but because she's the most intelligent and funny... But he wouldn't think twice about those qualities if it wasn't for the looks. Tom ultimately loves Summer because she's beautiful, not in a supermodel sex way, but it's more the hair, eyes, real person attractiveness... the "Summer effect" scene shows that look has burnt everyone she's comes across for a long time. Despite what he convinces himself, Tom's love for her ultimately comes from that look and beauty, and everything else he sees perfect in her derives from that
But with all that said, I don't think the film is all negative when it comes to the idea of delusion. Some people may fool themselves into believing in fate and true love, or what a greeting card expresses, but if these make a person happy, is it all bad?
Or maybe I just read into this too much and the film's concern is as shallow as the groan-worthy fate or not fate debate, that yoshue properly ostracized.

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
I completely believe that even though Summer ended up with someone that she doesn't believe in true love. I believe what she was looking for was a best friend more than anything, something she had with Tom but inevitably, she fucked up their relationship and their friendship. He was never going to go back to her and she knew that, so she found the next best thing.

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
10/10 -> A
I actually witnessed a wrath of a person who watched the movie. She shot it down like some sick horse and then trampled on it until there was nothing but a smudge. After almost unanimous praise it has received I was a bit worried. Shit films do get celebrated in America every year. Especially "indie" movies (Hey Juno, I'm looking at you!).
But fortunately (500) Days of Summer certainly delivers. It actually perfectly sums up all of the questions and doubts about love, true love and relationships. It's only weakness are the lame friends and buddies Tom has.
I loved how everything was from Tom's point of view. I loved how they showed his happiness, his sadness, the reality vs. expectations scene which is quite possibly the most poignant scene in any (anti)romantic movie.
Great movie and certainly among this years best movies.

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
I thought it was emo hipster bullshit.
I suppose the nicest thing I can say about it is that I liked it better than Juno. But it's still not very good. With main characters this unlikeable, it's hard to root for anyone to emerge unscathed. Summer may have been a cunt, but Tom was whiny and annoying and totally false. I loved JGL in Brick, but fuck was he irritating here. And Zooey seems to have mastered only one facial expression: wide-eyed and naïve.
I suppose I'm being too harsh on it; I liked the general style of the thing, and it had a good soundtrack. But man oh man did the leads drag it down. The whole enterprise is kinda lame.
JGL also looks uncannily like my best friend from elementary school, which is kinda freaky.
