I still love Transformers as much as I did on my first viewing but me at home, vs me with my brother at the 8:00 opening night showing with a crazy audience will never be beaten. But I agree with Magnus, most summer blockbusters tend to go down worse on DVD, not drastically but the excitement factor is taken away.

Case in Point, Sith!!!

Surprisingly the last 3 Potter films all stand strong on the small screen.

I enjoyed it. I thought it was a lot of fun and I loved Timothy Olyphant in it. The final act needed to end with a bigger bang though.

7/10 (B)

After several more viewings I have to admit that the movie suffers under bad villians. Sitting in front of a computer most of the time was not very badass.

I see your point, but how is a hacker supposed to do the bad work if he can't be in front of a computer? Just asking. ;)

this and "Die Hard With a Vengeance" are two great sequels - not too far below the quality of the original - and well ahead of the disappointing Die Harder.

Nice to see people coming around to seeing this as a piece of junk... I was shocked at the reaction here after I saw it originally. It was probably one of my bottom 10 movies of last year.

While I still think the villains kind of suck, Willis-Long and some of the most incredible action ever are just way too much fun. A-

As I mentioned earlier I think this is the best sequel to Die Hard movies for me. The action is great and it keeps flowing throughout. Justin Long is a great addition and Willis is great here. The story flows very well and the banter between Long and Willis helps to keep it fun. The villains are mostly behind computers but they do a lot of great impactful things. The ending needed one big action scene but that does not take away from the experience.

I've always enjoyed this sequel. I'd still put Die Hard 2 over it just because I though Saddler was a much better villain than Olyphant, but this movie is a lot of fun even if the set pieces get really over the top at times. I liked Justin Long in this movie too and his chemistry with Willis is solid throughout.

Maggie Q should have definitely been the main villain though, because I found her alot more threatening than any of the scenes with Olyphant who I do love as actor now, but man was he miscast here.

Live Free or Die Hard is awesome. Especially the unrated version, though I do wish they kept the "I rant out of bullets" line for it.

Post Re: Live Free or Die Hard
This film struggles to be a Die Hard movie, in my opinion. It's a top tier Bruce Willis action movie but it purposely avoids all connective tissue to what we know as a Die Hard movie. It is too flashy. It also fails to capitalise on John McClane being a legendary action character. If it didn't want to be a fourth Die Hard movie it could have at least been a meta Die Hard movie where it acknowledges the franchise's iconic status. It does neither.

And the villain is a bit meh. He's played too straight, which is perfectly highlighted when he pretends to be a 911 operator when talking to McClane's daughter. He should have acted that up a bit there instead of speaking exactly the same. And the way he dies is lame as fuck.

Overall it is an enjoyable actioner but it is as if it was made quickly just because they have a clever title (that applies even more so with the fifth movie) rather than having a banger of an idea.

This is like the Indiana Jones franchise the 4th movie existing as one more go is fine but making a 5th one... why.

Both are unneeded. Die Hard 4+5, Indy 4+5, even Rambo 4+5. Neither of these sequels make their respective franchises better.

"Four is the floor, five is try to revive"

Of course, not true for all franchises, and has more to do with proximity with original movies, but it's a catchy line for these three series.

Bruce Willis and Justin Long were such a good team and it still boggles the mind why they replaced him with boring ass Jai Courtney is part 5.

The films took a real nosedive when they started pairing McClane with white dudes.

Post Re: Live Free or Die Hard
Quote:
By the time Bruce Willis came to make Die Hard 2, he wanted to ditch the jokey action hero persona for a more serious approach recalls director Renny Harlin. "Bruce had turned from a Moonlighting TV star to a movie star overnight with one movie. And it’s not uncommon that when actors get into that position, they sort of develop different goals. So Bruce had this notion from the beginning that he wanted to now play John McClane totally straight, that this movie had to be serious," Harlin told Empire Magazine in 2021.

"I said to him, 'That’s not the John McClane the audience loves. They feel like you’re their friend now, and they don’t want to lose their friend.' We had a major disagreement about this. He said, 'Those one-liners and jokey comments — that’s bullshit. With lives on the line, you can’t say that kind of thing.' I said, 'Yeah, not in real life, but this is a movie. This is Die Hard.' It came to a point where I had to go to [producer] Joel [Silver] and say, 'We have a real problem.'"
The trio had a meeting to discuss Willis' determination to play the role straight. "The outcome was that Bruce agreed to do as many takes as he wanted of the way he wanted to do it, and then we’d do one take the way I wanted to do it, with humour. He did it reluctantly, and not so happily, but he did it. And in the end, every single funny moment that could be caught — even a smile he might have flashed before he realised the cameras were rolling — was cut into the movie. The first question the executives asked, when they saw it, was, 'Do you have any more moments with humour?' I said, 'Unfortunately, I used everything I had.'"

Harlin remembers one scene in particular. "The little scene where he needs to send a fax to his buddy in LA, with the fingerprints of the bad guys. He finds a counter at the airport, and this lady has a little bit of starry eyes for this cool guy. And then Bruce shows the ring on his finger and says, 'Just the fax, ma’am. Just the fax.'

The director remembers Willis hating that line. "He said, 'That is so cheesy and stupid. I refuse to say it.' It took an hour there at the counter with me begging him and Joel getting involved to get him to say it once, out of 15 takes. But it’s in the movie and people love it. It’s not just funny, it shows he cares about his wife. It makes him relatable and really an honourable guy. Because it’s not just about saving the world — it’s about something much more personal.

I always knew Bruce was a douche. Great stuff from Harlin though :funny:

Just rewatched, a very solid entry. The PG-13 hurts the edge to get it to 1 and 3 levels but this is pretty top notch outside of the plane vs. truck scene. Outside of that it is pretty much everything you want from an action movie.
